Ao dai - Vietnamese traditional dress
Simple, yet charming, graceful and elegant, áo dài was designed to praise the slender beauty of Vietnamese women. The dress is a genius combination of ancient and modern. It shows every curve on the girl's body, creating sexiness for the wearer, yet it still preserves the traditional feminine grace of Vietnamese women with its charming flowing flaps. The simplicity of áo dài makes it convenient and practical, something that other Asian traditional clothes lack. The waist-length slits of the flaps allow every movement of the legs: walking, running, riding a bicycle, climbing a tree, doing high kicks. The looseness of the pants allows comfortability. As a girl walks in áo dài, the movements of the flaps make it seem like she's not walking but floating in the air. This breath-taking beautiful image of a Vietnamese girl walking in áo dài has been an inspiration for generations of Vietnamese poets, novelists, artists and has left a deep impression for every foreigner who has visited the country.

Clothes & Boots in Hoi An Vietnam
In my latest adventures through Vietnam, I stumbled on a place that was like Disney Land for fashionistas... Hoi An, Vietnam. While there, I was able to have custom made black (nice) leather thigh-high boots, and an entire wardrobe crafted for less than what I spend on a pair of jeans in the U.S. Defo worth the trip. Only problem? I got "designers block" which leads me to ask: If you could have any piece of clothing custom designed to fit you, what would you choose?

Vietnamese traditional long dress (Áo dài)
Music : Diễm Xưa (Piano & Guitar version)
Composer : Trịnh Công Sơn
The traditional dress for women in Vietnam is the costume that is called "Ao Dai" (pronounced "ow' yai" or "ow' zai") literally meaning "Long Dress". Early versions of the Ao Dai date back to 1744 when Lord Vu Vuong of the Nguyen Dynasty decreed both men and women should wear an ensemble of trousers and a gown that buttoned down the front. Nowadays, Ao Dai is a two-piece garment made of fabric, full-length dress worn over loose silk trousers reaching all the way to the ground. The dress splits into a front and back panel from the waist down. The dress length seems to be gradually shortening and today is usually just below the knee. Variations in the neck, between boat and mandarin style, are common and even adventurous alterations such as a low scooped neckline puffed sleeves or off the shoulder designs are appearing as ladies experiment with fashion. Women wear Ao Dai of various colors, often with intricate patterns and designs, in formal or work settings. Schoolgirls wear pure white, fully lined outfits symbolizing their purity.
Original design of Ao dai
Ao dai is literally the women's national dress of Vietnam. It is a contoured, full-length dress worn over black or white loose-fitting trousers. The dress splits into a front and back panel from the waist down. There are many stylish variations in color and collar design. Originally, the ao dai was loosely tailored with four panels, two of which were tied in back. In 1932, a nationalistic literacy group called the Tu Luc Van Doan designed what is essentially now the ao dai.
A similar costume is worn by the men and is also called an ao dai. However, the man's dress is shorter (knee length) and more loose-fitting. The color of the brocade and the embroidered dragon were worn only by the Emperor. Purple was the color reserved for high ranking mandarins while the blue was worn by those mandarins of lower rank. The dresses for mourning have frayed fringes a line up the back and may be either white or black, although white is the standard color for mourning.
Ao dai as a national symbol of Vietnam
To the Vietnamese people, ao dai has always been synonymous with grace, and beauty. Throughout the many trials and tribulation of Vietnam's history, the ao dai remained unchanged in its symbolism and the image it conjures in the hearts of all Vietnamese. Today, due to its timelessness, the ao dai remained the national dress for both Vietnamese men and women. The ao dai and what it represents transcends all ages and it reaches the lives of people from all walks of life. To the Vietnamese people, rich or poor, the ao dai is still the dress of choice on social occasion and enjoys a preference on special occasions as well.
Ao dai, an endless stream of emotion
Since the dawn of Vietnamese literature and music, poets and musicians alike have expound the beauty of the ao dai and the grace and beauty it brings to people who wears it. Nowhere in modern literature does an article of clothing have the power to conjure drama, romance and fate like the ao dai in Vietnamese literature. Symbolically, one can argue that Vietnam is ao dai and ao dai is Vietnam. Although the trends in fashion brought to the traditional ao dai many changes in terms of materials and western influences, the ao dai remains a timeless article of clothing that has the strength to unify people.
Ao Dai, from an international point of view
It is an elegant, demure, and yet sexy outfit that suits people of all ages. Anthony Grey described the Ao Dai in his novel Saigon as "demure and provocative... women seemed not to walk but to float gently beneath the tamarinds on the evening breeze.". The Ao Dai covers everything but its thin fabric hides almost nothing! That's true, Ao Dai is so charming and so sexy.

Huoi Trinh, Immigrant Entrepreneur
Huoi Trinh came to the U.S. from Vietnam with lots of family and a big dream. Starting out as a seamstress in South Boston's Fields Corner neighborhood, she sewed traditional Vietnamese clothing and soon realized she could play a more significant role in the local community.
Trinh began sourcing and buying Vietnamese gift items. The strategy worked. Today, My Xuyen Corp. occupies a prominent retail space in Fields Corner and offers far more than traditional gifts.

JUST DO IT! Human trafficking in Nike's sweatshop factory in Malaysia
Award-winning* TV reports on human trafficking of workers by Vietnam's state-run recruitment agencies for Nike's sweatshops in Malaysia. We, the Committee to Protect Vietnamese Workers, and the Textile Clothing Footwear Union of Australia, alerted and provided witnesses to the investigations.
** VISIT PROTECTVIETWORKERS.COM FOR MORE ARTICLES. FOR EXAMPLE: **
[|] The Vietnamese regime runs forced labor camps behind the facade of drug rehab facilities. Workers are beaten into husking cashews for export to western markets
[|] The Vietnamese Defence Minister creates several jobshark agencies which make money for his ministry by trafficking workers, like those in this TV report
[|] The Vietnamese Communist Party's labor branch, which calls itself a union, actually works behind the scene to arrest and jail strikers. We have obtained a top-level document as evidence of this.

You have absolutely no idea what to expect, but you could not be more excited either!! He laughs and points into the field and repeats the command in Vietnamese, rolling his eyes at you. Embarrassed, you saddle up and head out as soon as the sun peeks up over the horizon. Within minutes, your friend quietly exclaims in Vietnamese, "Be really still! Look, across that field...the deer are running and jumping...and the wolves over there are looking for food!" You strain your eyes trying to make out the images in the silvery sunlight, as if you knew what you were looking for. Again, he looks at you rolling his eyes and repeats what he said in Vietnamese. Only this time, he adds, "I thought you said you learned Vietnamese before you came here!" You snap back in Vietnamese, "How was I supposed to know I was going to need to talk about animals in Vietnamese?" Rolling his eyes once more and laughing, he replies in language, "This IS a vacation...isn't it??" VietnamesePod101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn Vietnamese!

Brodka "W pięciu smakach"
Whole concept of the video bases on specificity of the place that have just disappeared from the map of Warsaw yelding to new archictectural structures.
So called "Fair Europe" was a hudge market filled with hundreds of self made stalls hiding mostly cheap clothing. This area was also famous for tiny bars dishing Vietnamese cousine (since there was large population of Vietnemese immigrants working at the market).
Brodka's song is about a peculiar custom that was alive until the very last days of market's existence. People frequented Vietnamese bars hidden in the labyrinth of looking alike lanes to finish all night party with the famous pho soup. The video shows this habit twisted by imperfect memory of the place already being mythologized.
All the materials incorporated into Brodka's costume (trainers, textiles, chopsticks, bags, etc) were essentials for the market scenery.
The whole video was shot in one night.

Shot a concept promo video for Cup Clothing!
Here is a bit about them and what they do:
"Cup" in Cup Clothing stands for Culture, Unity and Progression. Through our clothing line we hope to instill pride in our Vietnamese heritage through design while promoting philanthropy and community involvement. Our company consists of a whole two individuals, but our ambition, energy, and optimism makes our company feel like a company of many more. We have been involved in Vietnamese student organizations for many years on the local and national level. Still to this day, we continue to travel throughout the United States hoping to make an impact wherever we go. Cup Clothing started out of the love for our Vietnamese culture and street apparel. We realized that there was a void in fresh, original, and culturally enlightening design. This is when we asked ourselves, "Why not start a culturally-based clothing line for fun?" If it goes somewhere, then it goes somewhere, but the main thing is that we have fun in the process. If it's not fun, then why even do it?

The traditional Vietnamese wedding is one of the most important ceremonies in Vietnamese culture, with influence from Confucian and Buddhist ideologies.
A wedding in Annam (Middle of Vietnam) in 1900s. The bridegroom's family was going to bride's house to ask her parents to take her home, a traditional process of Vietnamese people.
While traditional clothes of Vietnam have always been very diverse depending on the era and occasion, after the Nguyễn Dynasty women began to wear elaborate Áo dài for their weddings. These dresses were modeled after the Áo mệnh phụ (royal Áo dài) of Nguyễn Dynasty court ladies. The style of the Nguyễn Dynasty has remained popular and is still used in current-day Vietnamese wedding attire. The difference between the Áo mệnh phụ and the typical Áo dài is the elaborateness of its design. The former is usually embroidered with imperial symbols such as the phoenix and includes an extravagant outer cloak. This gown is preferably in red or pink, and the bride usually wears a Khăn đống headdress. The groom wears a simpler male equivalent of the dress, often in the color blue.
An engagement ceremony usually takes place half a year or so before the wedding. In the past, most marriages were arranged by the parents or extended family, and while children were sometimes consulted, it was nearly always the parents' final decision. It was not unusual for the bride and groom to meet for the first time at the day of their engagement. However, in the last few decades, Vietnamese women and men marry based on love rather than arranged marriages.
Preparations for the traditional Vietnamese wedding first begins by choosing a date and time for the marriage ceremony. This is decided by a Buddhist monk, Spiritual leader, or fortune teller due to the spiritual nature of the occasion. This tradition may change if the family is Catholic.
The wedding consists of an extensive set of ceremonies: asking permission to receive the bride, receiving the bride at her house, and bringing the bride to the groom's house. Both Vietnamese and oversea-Vietnamese who desire to have a hybrid traditional Vietnamese and Western-style wedding will often incorporate the last two ceremonies with the Western-style wedding.
At the end of the ceremonies, there is a wedding reception for the two families and guests.
[edit]Asking permission to "receive" the bride
Before the wedding day, the groom's family would make a trip to the bride's home with a gift of betel nuts to officially ask permission to receive the bride. At this time, the bride's family would confirm the wedding and further proceedings would take place.
In actuality, this now obsolete ceremony was used in the past to confirm—last minute—that the marriage would still take place. Due to often forced arranged marriages, some brides fled from home. Thus, this ceremony was more so used to confirm that the wedding would proceed. You must ask permission or else you won't be able to marry. If you ask you will be welcomed with kind comfort, and a chance to receive your bride.
A Vietnamese country wedding
On the day of the wedding, the procession of the groom's family is led in specific order. The first person would be the representative of the groom's house followed by the groom's father, the groom, then the rest of his family and close friends
In the past, the groom's mother might not take part in the procession as a sign that she would not be a threat to the future bride; she would even "hide" for a short period upon the bride's welcoming to the groom's home. However, this practice has long been abandoned. The number of people participating in the groom's procession varies but is usually restricted to a smaller number (20 or so) to make it easier on the bride's family, which must receive all the guests.

SACHIKA more wishes,happiness and fortune
To-Tam and To-Nya Ton-Nu are parallel reflections, fashion's yin and yang; each sister possessing qualities that compliment the other. To-Tam aka "the righty," is a musical maestro with a mind for business. She handles the marketing and sales division of SACHIKA. While To-Nya, aka "the Lefty, is the more artistic of the two. Her creative decisions and original designs are what shine on the fashion forefront. They are two sides of the same coin. Born to Vietnamese parents, just five minutes apart in Paris (France), but bred in Montreal (Quebec) as the eldest of six children. To-Tam graduated with high honors from the University of Montreal with a Bachelors Degree in Communications & Journalism; while To-Nya graduated with top honors distinguishing herself as the highest ranked student of her program at the renowned International Academy of Design & Technology. For as long as they could remember, they had dreams of taking the fashion world by storm. To-Nya, who scooped multiple prizes for her talent including making the cover of the National Post in 2003, had already held the post of Head-Designer for several companies in Canada; whereas To-Tam was the top salesperson in a Montreal-based fashion company. Their goal of founding a clothing label and their passion for style made New York City the ideal destination to pursue their ultimate dream. In 2006, taking only the bare minimum, the twins took a chance and moved to the big city in search of opportunity. As cocktail waitresses and real estate agents (Citi Habitats) working in the hustle and bustle of the big apple, the twin designers were inspired to create a brand to answer the clothing needs of the active woman. Staying trendy, sophisticated, and comfortable while constantly on the move was a challenge- a challenge that sparked an idea. and in a short time, SACHIKA was born. And it is through hard work and double the determination, their dreams of revolutionizing the dress continues today with no signs of slowing down. SACHIKA in Japanese means: "more wishes, more fortune, and more happiness." It is a tribute to their parents who owned and operated restaurants specializing in fine Japanese cuisine- so these sisters are no strangers to flavor. The SACHIKA brand is tailored from the finest fabrics and cut to clothe even the most distinct feminine shapes and silhouettes. SACHIKA dresses are made to be versatile; many can be adjusted and converted to fit all occasions. SACHIKA specializes in classy yet flirty, and flattering feminine dresses. The label effortlessly takes the woman from day to evening saving her the hassle of going home and changing after a busy day's work. And with four eyes, four ears, two minds, and one passion for fashion and lifestyle, these visionaries (To-Tam and To-Nya) with their bubbling personalities and originality will guarantee "SACHIKA" for the modern woman for years to come.
