Black tomatoes in Israel
There's a brand new Israeli development -- the black tomato. The new tomato, called the "Black Galaxy," was developed by Technological Seeds DM. The company says that the color is the produce of a special pigment, which was derived from blueberries and introduced into the new species. The pigment is photosensitive and the longer the tomato is left on the vine, the darker it gets. The unique pigment also carries health benefits, such as a high concentration of antioxidants and Vitamin C. The black tomato will make its worldwide debut at the Arava Agricultural R&D Exhibition, in early February.

Pop icon Madonna will launch her upcoming world tour in Israel. The tour for Madonna's new album, MDNA, will set off on May 31 at Ramat Gan Stadium. Unlike her last two concerts in Israel, where general admission cost NIS 490 per ticket, most audience members will pay between NIS 240 and 490 for the MDNA concert. VIP entrance will cost between NIS 1500 and NIS 2500. On Sunday night, the 53-year-old singer crazed Super Bowl audiences with her half time show. Marijuana to cancer patients
More than two-thirds of cancer patients who were prescribed medical marijuana to combat pain are reportedly satisfied with the treatment. The study - conducted recently at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, in conjunction with the Israel Cancer Association - involved 264 cancer patients who were treated with medical marijuana for a full year. Some 61 percent of the respondents reported a significant improvement in their quality of life as a result of the medical marijuana, while 56 percent noted an improvement in their ability to manage pain. The most common types of cancer for which medical marijuana is prescribed are lung cancer, breast cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

Report shows Egyptians involved in terror attack
Israel bolstered its security along the Egyptian border amid new intelligence received that terrorists were planning to attack Israelis. Israel's Chief of General Staff Lt.Gen. Benny Gantz ordered the army to bolster its defensive measures along the Egyptian border and gather intelligence using electronic and visual means in an effort to track down the terrorists planning the attacks. The new measures went into effect Wednesday afternoon. Meanwhile an initial probe conducted by the Israel Army into last week's terror attack near Eilat in which 8 Israelis were killed, revealed that at least three of the terrorists were Egyptian nationals. One of the terrorists belonged to a radical Egyptian group and was tried in Egypt but escaped from prison during the first days of anti-regime protests there. Details of the probe were submitted to Egyptian officials by Maj.Gen. Amir Eshel, head of the army's General Staff Planning branch who traveled to Cairo earlier this week. Eshel also showed Egyptian officials photographic evidence to support the findings, the Web site said. The report showed Israeli soldiers did their utmost to prevent Egyptian soldiers and border guards from being hurt during gun battles that erupted between Israeli soldiers and terrorists who fled to the Egyptian side of the border. Videos shot taken from aircraft showed that Israeli soldiers intentionally diverted fire from the Egyptian all-terrain vehicles and soldiers towards open areas near the border base ...

Syrian troops retreating
After intense clashes with anti-government army defectors Syrian security forces have retreated from the streets of one of biggest suburbs of the capital. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights' head Rami Abdul-Rahman says that as of early Sunday, government troops had pulled back to a provincial headquarters and a security agency building in the Damascus suburb of Douma. Central Damascus has for most of Syria's 10-month uprising been under the tight control of forces loyal to President Bashar Assad, but its suburbs have witnessed intense anti-regime protests. Douma, about 20 kilometers northeast of Damascus, is an important strategic point for the Assad regime, mainly because of its proximity to Adra, where there is a Scud missile base. In May 2010, the Times of London reported that satellite imagery showed Hezbollah fighters training in the operation of surface-to-surface missiles at a large base near Adra. The photos showed barracks, a large arsenal and a fleet of trucks used to move missiles to Lebanon.

Google Street in Israel
Next time you are walking down the street smile! Israel's Justice Ministry said it had agreed to allow the controversial Google Street view service run in Israel. The service allows users views of streets and other locations in the country. Cars travel along the streets taking millions of digital photographs and record location data using sophisticated technology. The images allow users to see what a specific location looks like as if they were standing at the spot. The service was introduced by Google in 2007 and operates in 30 countries including the United States, Australia, and Britain. Israel at the time opted out of the service due to security concerns. Following intensive negotiations with Google the Justice Ministry agreed to allow the service here. Under the agreement reached with Google, Israeli citizens will be able to file civil litigations against Google regarding its operations in Israel via Google Israel, its local branch.

Black Hebrews mourn Whitney
Israel's Black Hebrew community is mourning the loss of singer Whitney Houston, who famously visited them in 2003. Ben Ammi Ben-Israel, the leader of the 2500-strong group, told Channel 2 TV Sunday that he considered Houston his "spiritual daughter." In 2003, she visited the Black Hebrews in the desert town of Dimona. The group moved to the Holy Land from the US decades ago. They believe they're descendants of a lost tribe of Israelites.

Turkey suspends ties with Israel
Turkey's Prime Minister said Tuesday Ankara was suspending all military, industrial and economic ties with Israel and warned additional measures and sanctions would be taken against Jerusalem. Recep Tayyip Erdogan's announcement came a day after Turkey downgraded diplomatic ties with Israel ordering all senior Israeli diplomats to leave the country by Wednesday. Erdogan also said he was considering visiting Gaza but would make a final decision after he visits Egypt later this month. Defense Ministry Diplomatic-Security bureau head Amos Gilad said Turkey has a lot to lose by taking such steps. Israel's Foreign Ministry said all diplomats above the rank of second secretary would leave Turkey and others would remain in their posts. The latest steps taken by Turkey are in response to Israel's refusal to apologize for the deaths of nine Turkish activists in a raid on a Gaza flotilla boat last May. Israel expressed regret over the incident and saidit would be willing to pay into a joint fund for the victims' families.
