John Martin (painter)

John Martin (19 July 1789 – 17 February 1854) was an English Romantic painter, engraver and illustrator. He was celebrated for his typically vast and melodramatic paintings of religious subjects and fantastic compositions, populated with minute figures placed in imposing landscapes. Martin's paintings, and the engravings made from them, enjoyed great success with the general public—in 1821 Lawrence referred to him as "the most popular painter of his day"—but were lambasted by Ruskin and other critics.

Early life

Martin was born in July 1789, in a one-room cottage, at Haydon Bridge, near Hexham in Northumberland, the fourth son of Fenwick Martin, a one-time fencing master. He was apprenticed by his father to a coachbuilder in Newcastle upon Tyne to learn heraldic painting, but owing to a dispute over wages the indentures were cancelled, and he was placed instead under Boniface Musso, an Italian artist, father of the enamel painter Charles Muss.

With his master, Martin moved from Newcastle to London in 1806, where he married at the age of nineteen, and supported himself by giving drawing lessons, and by painting in watercolours, and on china and glass—his only surviving painted plate is now in a private collection in England. His leisure was occupied in the study of perspective and architecture.

John Martin (meteorologist)

John Martin M.D. (1789–1869) was a British meteorologist and physician, known now for his writing on Tonga.

Life

Martin practised for some years as a physician in the City of London, and died at Lisbon on 8 July 1869.

Works

The Athenæum reported on Martin's meteorological investigations. For pressure, temperature, and moisture, he made meteorological charts from daily observations. He noted ozone, as well as factors thought to affect cholera and yellow fever.

Martin edited an account of Tonga from William Mariner. It appeared as An Account of the Natives of the Tonga Islands, in the South Pacific Ocean, with an original Grammar and Vocabulary of their Language. Compiled and arranged from the extensive communications of Mr. William Mariner, several years resident in those Islands,' 2 vols. London, 1817; 2nd edit. 1818. It was also reprinted as vol. xiii. of Constable's Miscellany; a French translation appeared at Paris in November 1817. Mariner had been detained in Tonga from 1805 to 1810.

John Martin (English footballer)

John Martin (born 15 July 1981 in Bethnal Green, London) is an English footballer who was last attached to Isthmian League Division One North club Harlow Town.

Career

Martin began his career with Leyton Orient, making over 90 Football League appearances, before dropping into non-League football with Farnborough Town, Hornchurch, Grays Athletic and Stevenage Borough.

During the 2007–08 season, Martin enjoyed a successful first season featuring in the centre of midfield for Stevenage Borough. However, the arrival of new manager Graham Westley saw Martin fall out of favour and his first-team chances were limited. In February 2009, he was loaned out to Ebbsfleet United. Martin was recalled by manager Westley on 7 April 2009, playing a vital role in the two wins against Cambridge United and Ebbsfleet United. The latter was to be his last performance for Stevenage and on 20 May 2009, Martin was released by Stevenage Borough. On 7 August, it was announced that Martin had joined Essex based Conference South outfit Chelmsford City.<ref name="Clarets complete John Martin "coup"">"Clarets complete John Martin "coup"".
