Broadcasting

Broadcasting is exciting and challenging field. Today jobs are found in traditional radio and television markets, as well as new opportunities through the World Wide Web and new forms of electronic media. Whether you choose to work in broadcast journalism, production, performance, sales or management, our two-track broadcasting sequence helps prepare you for a rewarding career in these fields.

News Editorial

The news-editorial sequence in the communications major trains journalists for many career opportunities. This includes work at newspapers, magazines, news organizations and online publications. The field of print journalism is rapidly changing, and our program gives students the training they need to be a successful part of this important industry.

Public Relations

Public relations involves working with the media on behalf of a company or client. Professionals in this field must also have good people skills, as well as knowledge of marketing techniques. The public relations sequence at UT Martin features courses designed to develop these skills for the student, who wishes to work in this exciting and rewarding field of communications.

Visual Communication

Visual communication is the art of designing information for specific audiences. All media rely heavily on visual communication including print publications, websites, multimedia, and video production. The visual communication sequence teaches you the skills you need to succeed in this highly creative field of communications.

Develop the skills you need to succeed in a Communications career. The Communications major is a professionally oriented program in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The courses that you will take are geared toward teaching you the skills that you will need for a communications career. You will also learn the theory behind the everyday decisions you have to make on the job. You can choose from our four award-winning degree sequences in Broadcasting, News Editorial, Public Relations, and Visual Communication. We take a hands-on approach to learning. You begin working with the equipment and producing work for real clients your first year in the program.

As a Communications major you will complete four lower division courses that introduce you to the four areas broadcasting, news editorial, public relations, and visual communication. You will then complete upper-division courses for a specific sequence that will help develop your professional skills. The department's faculty work with you to find internships and guide you through finding that first job.

Majors can choose from a Bachelor of Art or Bachelor of Science degree. The department also offers a minor in Communications.
