Alberton, Gauteng
Alberton is a town situated on the East Rand of the Gauteng Province in South Africa and celebrated its centenary year in 2005. As at 2007, it had a population of 202,202 inhabitants. It is known as a typical bedroom community, meaning that is it a community primarily residential in character, with most of its workers commuting to nearby suburbs or cities to earn their livelihood. The town has multiple access roads to all major freeways in Gauteng, most notably the R59, N3 and N12. Situated on the banks of the Natal Spruit close to the major urban centres of Johannesburg (15 kilometres south east) and Pretoria (76 kilometers), Alberton is unique and boasts a long and interesting history.

It was named after the State Secretary of the South African Republic, W. Eduard Bok. Duduza
Duduza is a township west of Nigel on the east Rand, Gauteng, South Africa. It was established in 1964 when Africans were resettled from Charterston because it was considered by the apartheid government to be too close to a white town. A local authority was established in 1983. Duduza experienced violent school, consumer, bus, and rent boycotts from 1984 to 1987. A state of emergency was imposed in July 1985 and the South African Army was called in as the violence peaked.

Edenvale is a town on the East Rand in Gauteng, South Africa. It started out in 1903 as a small settlement named Rietfontein which sprung up around the Rietfontein Gold Mine. Modern Edenvale has become a very well known part of Johannesburg. It lies about halfway between the O.R. Tambo International Airport and the city centre. This makes it a very comfortable spot to live as it is quite close to all the major parts of Johannesburg. Soshanguve
Soshanguve is a township situated about 45 km north of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. It was established in 1974 on land scheduled to be incorporated into a bantustan bordering on Mabopane in Bophuthatswana, to Sotho, Shangaan, Nguni and Venda people (thus the name) who were resettled from Atteridgeville and Mamelodi. It later became part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, and was the scene of riots related to poor service delivery in January 2006 . It was also home to Smangaliso Mkhatshwa the Catholic Priest who was banished from Transkei by the apartheid regime until he later became a member of the first post-apartheid parliament (1994) and then mayor of Tshwane. Other well known anti-apartheid actvist are Mpho Walter Molema, Thabo Makola, Tamati Matlala and Steven Makena, these were killed during 1985-1986 Struggle and thereafter the State of Emergency was declared by the apartheid Government under PW Botha.

Wattville
Wattville is a township south of Benoni in east Rand, Gauteng, South Africa. It was established in 1941, and by 1948, 400 houses were built on 34 hectares. After 1948, building stopped as it was threatened with destruction. This was because it was considered too close to a white town. However, building continued in 1951 and by 1955 about 2,000 new houses had been erected. The ANC president Oliver Tambo used to live here in the 1950s. He is also buried here. He lived in this township together with his wife Adelaide Tambo who continued to serve the community and the local Anglican congregation. Amongst her services within the community was to donate food parcel every year to the local senior citize until she met her untimely death in 2008. She was buried next to her late husband. An area was erected in this township in honour of the couple and it's called Tamboville with more 500 families still growing due influx to the township.

Witwatersrand
The Witwatersrand is a low, sedimentary range of hills, at an elevation of 1700–1800 metres above sea-level, which runs in an east-west direction through Gauteng in South Africa. The word in Afrikaans means "the ridge of white waters". Geologically it is complex, but the principal formations are quartzites, conglomerates and shales of the Witwatersrand System. It forms a continental divide with run-off to the north draining into the Limpopo River and Indian Ocean and to the south draining into the Orange River and Atlantic. The Witwatersrand lies within the province of Gauteng, formerly called the PWV area, an acronym for Pretoria, Witwatersrand, and Vaal.

Boksburg is a city with 471,121 inhabitants[3] on the East Rand of Gauteng province of South Africa. Gold was discovered in Boksburg in 1887. It was named after the State Secretary of the South African Republic, W. Eduard Bok. The Main Reef Road linked Boksburg to all the other major mining towns on the Witwatersrand and the Angelo Hotel (1887) was used as a staging post.
Boksburg is part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, that forms the local government of most of the East Rand.
The Mining Commissioner Montague White built a large dam which, empty for years, was dubbed White's Folly until a flashflood in 1889 silenced detractors. The 150,000 square metre dam is now the Boksburg Lake, and is surrounded by lawns, trees, and terraces.

Originally, Boksburg was laid out in 1887 to serve the surrounding gold mines, and named after the State Secretary of the South African Republic, Eduard Bok. The Main Reef Road linked Boksburg to all the other major mining towns on the Witwatersrand and the Angelo Hotel was used as a production post. A railway was built to link Boksburg to Johannesburg in 1890.
Boksburg lake made world news in 1989 when the newly elected Conservative Party municipality decided to fence off the lake and prohibit non-whites from using the facility.
Segregation policies were taken to such an extreme that when council granted transfer of lease of the Golden Lake Restaurant on the lake premises from S.Y Ho to another Chinese woman, S.Y Yip, it was with the provision that the new lease barred nonwhites-including Chinese, from dining there.[4] Controversy surrounding the safety of the lake was created when Councellor Stephanie Greyling made the following statement: “the lake is now safe…Boksburg Lake was like a second Chicago with more than a 100 murders in 18 months…” [5]
However official figures were given as 27, and this included the number of people who died in the neighbouring Boksburg Benoni Hospital. Statistics released by the offices of the Minister of Law and Order listed only two murders at Boksburg Lake from November 1986 until November 1988” [6]
As a result of the council’s policies, blacks boycotted the CBD, and commercial sales dropped 40% to 70%.[7] Also, The Lake became the focal point on the East Rand for violent racial clashes between Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) supporters and African National Congress (ANC) supporting Coloureds and Blacks from the neighbouring townships. The decision to re-introduce segregation at the facilities sparked off a local and international uproar, with local Coloured and Black residents initiating a yearlong boycott of shops in the CBD.[citation needed]
Chris Hani, leader of the South African Communist Party and chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC), was assassinated outside his Dawn Park, Boksburg home in 1993[8] and is buried in the town's South Park cemetery[9]
Economy[link]
Boksburg boasts a diversified industrial and mining centre. It has become one of the most important gold-producing towns on the Witwatersrand. Boksburg is also any shoppers delight. It boasts the East Rand Mall which is one of the most popular and biggest malls in Gauteng.[10]
