Madman Entertainment is an Australian company that distributes international films as well as Japanese anime and manga in Australia and New Zealand. The company is owned by Funtastic Limited (listed on the ASX) and is one of the major entertainment companies in Australia. It employs 130 people and has an annual turnover of around A$50 million.^[1] Its headquarters is in the Collingwood suburb and in the Langridge Ward of the City of Yarra, Victoria.^[2][3]

Madman has secured the local release rights to popular titles including One Piece, Dragon Ball Z, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Akira, and almost all of Studio Ghibli's catalogue. In addition to DVD sales, Madman manages the theatrical release of some of their titles, particularly the Studio Ghibli movies. According to market research, Madman accounts for 97% of the total anime DVD market in Australia.

Madman Entertainment was founded in 1996 to distribute anime from Manga Entertainment Australia along with Polygram and Siren Entertainment. Later on in 1997, Madman started to distribute anime from ADV Films along with Siren Entertainment. Madman now sublicenses anime from ADV Films, Funimation, Harmony Gold, Viz Media, Bandai Entertainment, Media Blasters, formerly Geneon, & recently Sentai Filmworks, although Siren Visual licenses the majority of their English-dubbed titles (9 as of now while Madman licenses only 3 as of now, excluding Geneon license rescues. However, the remaining number (6) of Sentai's English dubbed titles are yet to be licensed & distributed in Australia & New Zealand), and distributes anime from Manga Entertainment. As of 2008, only some of Manga Entertainment Australia's titles from the 1990s have been distributed by Madman. Battle Angel Alita was to be released in Australia by Manga and Madman in 2001, but this was canceled because ADV Films had the rights to the OVAs in North America and tried to market it in Australia with a new dub, while Manga UK and Madman Entertainment had the rights in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Some of their DVD releases have been jointly mastered with Britain's MVM Films or Revelation Films to save costs, and are therefore dual-region (Region 2 and Region 4). A few DVD titles from Madman, such as the Oh My Goddess! OVAs, are all-region or multi-region DVDs in the NTSC format, imported from the US and repackaged for sale in Australia and New Zealand (which normally use PAL colour).

A growing selection of manga titles translated by TOKYOPOP in the United States and Chuang Yi in Singapore are being imported and distributed through Madman Entertainment. In February 2008, Madman announced that they would also be distributing manga titles from Viz Media.^[4] Madman currently distributes manga from Viz Media, Dark Horse Comics, Tokyopop, and recently from Yen Press with the 2012 release of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Madman launched in 1996 solely as an anime distribution company, but has since expanded. They manage the distribution of live-action titles through their labels Madman Films, Directors Suite, Madman Sports, Madman Laughs, Madman Television, Bollywood Masala and Eastern Eye and also children's entertainment through their Planet Mad and Mad4Kids labels. Madman also has a theatrical distribution arm called Madman Cinema. In addition, the company distributes original series produced by Australia's Special Broadcasting Service on DVD.^[5]

In 2007, Madman began a licensing agreement to release original Cartoon Network and Adult Swim series on DVD in Australia and New Zealand.^[6] Madman also programmed Adult Swim's anime block in the two countries^[7] until Cartoon Network Australia dropped its entire Adult Swim lineup on 1 January 2008.^[8] Madman Entertainment released the complete series of M.A.S.K. over two DVD collections for the first time in Australia and New Zealand. Collection One was released in November 2006 and contains episodes 1 - 38, Collection Two was released in March 2007 and contains episodes 39 - 65 as well as all ten episodes of the racing series.^[9]

At the 2008 Supanova Pop Culture Expo, Madman announced plans to explore new distribution methods. The company now offers online streaming of selected anime episodes, beginning with the first episode of School Rumble.^[10] Madman now has a sub-page, Madman Scereening Room, dedicated to video streaming.^[11] Madman has also begun releasing Blu-ray Disc titles, starting with The Transformers: The Movie in June 2009.^[12][13]

In April 2008, the company announced a collaboration with British company Warp Films. Warp and Madman plan to make "at least two films together over the next three years, starting with Tyrannosaur."^[14]

Crispin McDougal Freeman (born February 9, 1972) is an American voice actor. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Crispin Freeman is the oldest of three children;^[1] he has a younger brother; actor, producer, director, and musician Clark Freeman,^[2] and a sister; actress and musician Cassidy Freeman.^[3] All three siblings attended the Latin School of Chicago, where he graduated in 1990.^[1] He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College, majoring in Theater and minoring in Computer Science. Afterward, he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University in Acting, and performed on Broadway (New York City), at the American Repertory Theater in (Cambridge), at the Mark Taper Forum in (Los Angeles), at Cincinnati's Playhouse in the Park, and at the Williamstown Theater Festival. As a child, Freeman was greatly influenced by anime shows such as Speed Racer and Battle of the Planets. Casey Kasem voiced the role of his favorite character, Mark of Battle of the Planets. He actually wanted to change his name to Mark at one point. Later, he discovered Voltron, Star Blazers, and Robotech, being quoted in the January 1999 issue of America Interview saying, "That show really blew me away." Freeman initially got involved in the anime voice-over industry when a friend of his landed a role in Peacock King. Knowing Freeman was a big anime fan, the friend suggested he call up Central Park Media (CPM) and apply for a job doing English dubs. It was not until he remembered all of the anime shows he watched as a child did he realize that some people are introduced to anime through the English dubbed versions. In 1997, Freeman landed the role of Zelgadis Greywords in Slayers along with Lisa Ortiz, Eric Stuart, and Veronica Taylor. He was the second and final voice actor to get the job, after Zelgadis' original voice actor, Daniel Cronin, lost contact with CPM after a year-long halt in the dubbing. Years later he turned to the American animation voice acting grounds. He been best known for his work in Marvel Comics based productions as Electro from The Spectacular Spider-Man, and Multiple Man in Wolverine and the X-Men. He is currently starring as Red Arrow in Young Justice for DC Comics and Warner Bros. Since then, Freeman has had various roles throughout his career. He has appeared in many video game titles as memorable characters. Such as Albedo from Namco's Xenosaga series, the God of the sun Helios in God of War 3, Haji, Joel the 6th, and Van Argeno in Blood+, the main protagonist Baldur, in Silicon Knights's Too Human, Breakdown in Transformers: War for Cybertron, The Winter Soldier in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and Iron Man in the sequel Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2. On August 11, 2007, he married Izobel Carol on the island of Hawaii at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. His brother Clark was his best man. In October, 2009, Crispin hosted two virtual town halls on Vokle.com. He took questions from fans, did character voices and read his favorite scary story. His sister Cassidy Freeman, starred in Smallville as Tess Mercer, the acting CEO of Luthor Corp. Freeman is also an educator, giving classes, workshops, and performance lectures in Los Angeles, California, for which information can be found on his official website under "classes".^[4] In addition to classes, Freeman releases a new voice acting podcast at the Voice Acting Mastery website every two weeks.^[5]
