Battle of Nasiriyah
The Battle of Nasiriyah took place from March 23, 2003 to March 29, 2003, and was one of the first major battles of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Heavy fighting took place in the city of Nasiriyah, Iraq in the southern portion of the country, between Ba'athist Iraqi forces and United States Marines over control of key bridges crossing over the Euphrates River and the Saddam Canal.
The battle began early on 23 March when a supply convoy of the United States Army took a wrong turn into the city and was ambushed. Eleven soldiers were killed and six soldiers, including Private First Class Jessica Lynch, were captured.
Some soldiers escaped the ambush. Forming a screen around their wounded, they fought off Iraqi counterattacks for several minutes, until being rescued by the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. After rescuing the soldiers who managed to escape the ambush, the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, under the call sign Task Force Tarawa, attacked north into the city, seizing two major bridges along "Ambush Alley". Eighteen Marines were killed in heavy urban fighting, including at least one Marine who was killed when A-10s mistakenly strafed a company of Marines north of the Saddam Canal.

Czech Republic
The Czech Republic (ⁱ/ˈtʃɛk/ CHEK;Czech: Česká republika, pronounced [ˈtʃɛskaː ˈrɛpuˌblɪka] ( listen), short form Česko Czech pronunciation: [ˈtʃɛskɔ]) is a landlocked country in Central Europe. The country is bordered by Poland to the north, Germany to the west, Austria to the south and Slovakia to the east. Its capital and largest city, with 1.3 million inhabitants, is Prague.
It is a pluralist multi-party parliamentary representative democracy, a member of the European Union, NATO, the OECD, the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the Visegrád Group.
The Czech state, formerly known as Bohemia, was formed in the late 9th century as a small duchy around Prague, at that time under dominance of the powerful Great Moravian Empire (which reached its greatest territorial extent during the reign of Svatopluk I from the House of Mojmír). After the fall of the Empire in 907, the centre of power was transferred from Moravia to Bohemia, under the Přemyslids. During the rule of Přemyslid dukes/kings and their successors, the Luxembourgs, the country reached its greatest territorial extent (13th–14th century). Life in the country was significantly affected by the Hussite wars, during which it faced economic embargo and crusades from all over Europe. Following the Battle of Mohács in 1526, the Crown of Bohemia was gradually integrated into the Habsburg monarchy as one of its three principal parts alongside the Archduchy of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary. The Bohemian Revolt (1618–20) led to the further centralization of the monarchy including forced recatholization and Germanization. During radical reforms in the 18th century the Bohemian Crown was even de facto abolished (1749). In the 19th century the Czech lands became the industrial powerhouse of the monarchy and the core of the Republic of Czechoslovakia which was formed in 1918, following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire after World War I.

Denmark
The Kingdom of Denmark (Danish: Kongeriget Danmark, pronounced [ˈkɔŋəʁiːəð ˈdanmɑɡ̊] ( listen)) is a constitutional monarchy and sovereign state consisting the country of Denmark in northern Europe and two autonomous constituent countries, the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic and Greenland in North America. Iraq
Iraq (/ɪˈræk/ or ⁱ/ɪˈrɑːk/; Arabic: العراق‎ al-‘Irāq); officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic: جمهورية العراق (help·info) Jumhūriyyat al-‘Irāq), is a country in Western Asia spanning most of the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, the eastern part of the Syrian Desert and the northern part of the Arabian Desert.
Iraq borders Syria to the northwest, Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Jordan to the southwest and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to the south. Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf. The capital city, Baghdad is in the center-east of the country.
Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run through the center of Iraq, flowing from northwest to southeast. These provide Iraq with agriculturally capable land and contrast with the steppe and desert landscape that covers most of Western Asia.
Historically, Iraq was the center of the Abbasid Arabic Islamic Empire. Iraq has been known to the west by the Greek toponym 'Mesopotamia' (Land between the rivers) and has been home to continuous successive civilizations since the 6th millennium BC. The region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers is often referred to as the cradle of civilization and the birthplace of writing, law and the wheel. At different periods in its history, Iraq was the center of the indigenous Akkadian, Sumerian, Assyrian, Babylonian, and Abbasid empires. It was also part of the Achaemenid, Hellenistic, Parthian, Sassanid, Roman, Rashidun, Umayyad, Mongol, Safavid, Afsharid, and Ottoman empires, and under British control as a League of Nations mandate.

Rome, the capital of Italy, was for centuries a political and religious centre of Western civilisation as the capital of the Roman Empire and site of the Holy See. After the decline of the Roman Empire, Italy endured numerous invasions by foreign peoples, from Germanic tribes such as the Lombards and Ostrogoths, to the Byzantines and later, the Normans, among others. Centuries later, Italy became the birthplace of Maritime republics and the Renaissance, an immensely fruitful intellectual movement that would prove to be integral in shaping the subsequent course of European thought.

Netherlands

New Zealand
New Zealand (Māori: Aotearoa) is an island country located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses ‒ that of the North and South Islands ‒ as well as numerous smaller islands. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions caused by the Pacific and Indo-Australian Plates clashing beneath the earth's surface.

Operation Granby was the name given to the British military operations during the Gulf War. 53,462 troops were deployed during the conflict. The total cost of operations was £2.434 billion (1992) of which at least £2.049 billion was paid for by other nations such as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia; £200 million of equipment was lost or written off.
Operation Granby took its name from John Manners, Marquess of Granby a British commander in the Seven Years' War.

Qatar
Qatar (ⁱ/ˈkɑːtɑr/ or ⁱ/kəˈtɑr/;Arabic: قطر‎ [ˈqɑtˤɑr]; local vernacular pronunciation: [ɡɪtˤɑr]), also known as the country or State of Qatar or locally Dawlat Qaṭar, is a sovereign Arab state, located in Western Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeasterly coast of the much larger Arabian Peninsula. Its sole land border is with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf. A strait of the Persian Gulf separates Qatar from the nearby island state of Bahrain.
Qatar has been ruled as an absolute monarchy by Al Thani family since the mid-19th century. Formerly a British protectorate noted mainly for pearling, it became independent in 1971, and has become one of the region's wealthiest states due to its enormous oil and natural gas revenues. In 1995, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani became Emir when he seized power from his father, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, in a peaceful coup d'état. The most important positions in Qatar are held by the members of the Al Thani family, or close confidants of the al-Thani family. Beginning in 1992, Qatar has built intimate military ties with the United States, and is now the location of U.S. Central Command’s Forward Headquarters and the Combined Air Operations Center.

United Kingdom

Brian Burridge
Air Chief Marshal Sir Brian Kevin BurridgeKCB, CBE, ADC, FCMI, FRAeS (b. 1949 in Maidstone, United Kingdom) is a retired Royal Air Force officer. A former Nimrod pilot, Burridge was in overall command of British forces under Operation Telic during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Brian Burridge joined the Royal Air Force as a university cadet (as a member of Cambridge University Air Squadron) being commissioned into the Royal Air Force on 24 September 1967. He was a pilot with operational background in the maritime patrol role, serving on Nos 206 and 120 Squadrons.
Burridge was promoted to the rank of pilot officer on 15 July 1970, to flying officer on 15 January 1971,flight lieutenant on 13 April 1972 to squadron leader on 1 July 1979 and to wing commander on 1 July 1985. In 1986 he attended the Royal Naval Staff College and then later that year went on to command the Nimrod Operational Conversion Unit. Promoted to group captain in 1990, he became officer commanding RAF Kinloss.
From 1992 he served in the Ministry of Defence, initially as Deputy Director of Force Doctrine (RAF) and later becoming the Director of Force Development in the Central Staff before being made Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of the Defence Staff in 1994 in the rank of air commodore. In 1997 he attended the Cabinet Office Top Management Programme and then later in the year became a Defence Fellow at King's College London. In 1998 he attended the Higher Command and Staff Course being promoted to air vice-marshal on 1 July 1998. In January 2000 he became Commandant of the Joint Services Command and Staff College, subsequently moving the College into a Public Private Partnership at Shrivenham. Civil war in Iraq
Following the U.S.-launched 2003 invasion of Iraq, the situation deteriorated, and by 2007, the intercommunal violence between Iraqi Sunni and Shi'a factions was described by the National Intelligence Estimate as having elements of a civil war. In a January 10, 2007 address to the American people, President George W. Bush stated that "80% of Iraq's sectarian violence occurs within 30 miles (48 km) of the capital. This violence is splitting Baghdad into sectarian enclaves, and shaking the confidence of all Iraqis." Two polls of Americans conducted in 2006 found that between 65% to 85% believed Iraq was in a civil war; however, a similar poll of Iraqis conducted in 2007 found that 61% did not believe that they were in a civil war.
In October 2006, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Iraqi government estimated that more than 365,000 Iraqis had been displaced since the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque, bringing the total number of Iraqi refugees to more than 1.6 million. By 2008, the UNHCR raised the estimate of refugees to a total of about 4.7 million (~16% of the population). The number of refugees estimated abroad was 2 million (a number close to CIA projections) and the number of internally displaced people was 2.7 million. In 2007, Iraq's anti-corruption board reported that 35% of Iraqi children, or about five million children, were orphans. The Red Cross has also stated that Iraq's humanitarian situation remains among the most critical in the world, with millions of Iraqis forced to rely on insufficient and poor-quality water sources.

David Snelson
Rear Admiral David George Snelson CB is a former Royal Navy officer who became Commander United Kingdom Maritime Forces.
Snelson joined the Royal Navy in 1969. He became Commanding Officer of the destroyer HMS Liverpool in 1997, Director of Naval Operations and Trade at the Ministry of Defence in 1998 and Director of Navy Staff Duties in 1999 before commanding the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal in 2001 and then being appointed Commander United Kingdom Maritime Forces in 2002. In March 2003 he was the Royal Navy Commander for Operation Telic during which he led maritime operations for the Invasion of Iraq from his headquarters ashore in Bahrain. He went on to be Chief of Staff (Warfare) for the Fleet in 2004 before retiring in 2006.
In retirement he became Chief Harbour Master for the Port of London Authority.

Geoff Hoon
Geoffrey "Geoff" William Hoon (born 6 December 1953) is a British politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashfield from 1992 to 2010. He is a former Defence Secretary, Transport Secretary, Leader of the House of Commons and Labour Party Chief Whip.
Hoon was born in Derby, England, and is the son of Ernest Hoon and June Collett.
Hoon was educated at the independent Nottingham High School before going on to Cambridge University, where he read law at Jesus College and graduated in 1974.
Hoon was a law lecturer at the University of Leeds from 1976–82, and was a warden at the all-male Devonshire Hall. He was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn in 1978, and was also a visiting law professor at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, from 1980-81. In 1982, Hoon became a practising barrister for two years in Nottingham.
Hoon was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for Derbyshire in 1984 and served in Brussels and Strasbourg for ten years. He was elected to the House of Commons at the 1992 general election for Ashfield, making his maiden speech on 20 May 1992, following the retirement of the sitting Labour MP, Frank Haynes. He held the seat with a majority of 12,987 and remained the constituency's MP until the 2010 general election. He also attended the Bilderberg Conference in Scotland in 1998. Hoon has acquired the irreverent nickname Buff, (Buffoon). Although it was originally rumored to have been the invention of a member of the Conservative Party, fellow Labour Party colleague Peter Kilfoyle recently took responsibility.

Glenn Torpy
Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Lester Torpy, GCB, CBE, DSO, ADC (born 27 July 1953) is a retired senior Royal Air Force commander. He was a fast jet pilot in the late 1970s and 1980s, saw active service during the Gulf War and then went on to higher command. He was the Air Component Commander on Operation Telic (British operations in Iraq) and served as Chief of the Air Staff, the professional head of the RAF, from 2006 to 2009. In that role Torpy hosted the RAF's biggest air display in two decades, and argued for consolidation of all British air power in the hands of the RAF.
The son of Gordon Torpy and Susan Torpy (née Lindsey), Torpy obtained a BSc degree in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College London. He joined the Royal Air Force as a pilot officer on 8 September 1974 and spent his early career, after he left the RAF College Cranwell, undertaking flying duties on Jaguar aircraft before qualifying as a weapons instructor on Hawk aircraft. He was promoted to flying officer on 8 March 1975 with seniority backdated to 8 June 1973,flight lieutenant on 8 December 1975, and squadron leader on 1 July 1983.

Graeme Lamb
Lieutenant-General Sir Graeme Cameron Maxwell Lamb, KBE, CMG, DSO (born 21 May 1953) is a retired British Army officer. He is a former Commander of the Field Army at Land Command, known for his contributions to counter-insurgency.
Educated at Rannoch School and Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he was commissioned into the Queen's Own Highlanders as a second lieutenant on 8 March 1973. He has served in Northern Ireland and in various theatres of war including Bosnia.
Lamb was promoted lieutenant on 8 September 1974,captain on 8 March 1979, and in 1981 he was Mentioned in Despatches for service in Northern Ireland. In the 1988 Queen's Birthday Honours he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). He was promoted lieutenant-colonel on 30 December 1990 (with seniority from 30 June 1990), and commanded 1st Battalion the Queen's Own Highlanders from 1991 to 1993. On 26 April 1994 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his service in the Gulf War in 1991, and awarded a Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service for operational service in Northern Ireland in 1993. He was promoted colonel on 30 June 1994, and brigadier on 30 June 1996, when he was appointed Commander of 5th Airborne Brigade. He then went on to join the staff of the Joint Services Command and Staff College. From 2001 to 2003 he served as Director Special Forces.

Graham Binns
Major General Graham John Binns CBE DSO MC is a retired British Army officer. Binns served as General Officer Commanding 1st Armoured Division and then Commandant Joint Services Command and Staff College. He had previously commanded the 7th Armoured Brigade (the "Desert Rats") during Operation Telic 1 when they took Basra in southern Iraq. He is now Chief Executive of Aegis Defence Services.
Graham Binns was educated at Hymers College in Hull.
Binns was commissioned on 11 December 1976, into the General list. He was transferred to The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire on 2 July 1977. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 11 December 1978. He was further promoted to Captain on 11 June 1983. With this regiment he saw service in Germany, Norway, and the UK.
Between 1986 and 1988, he served in the Ministry of Defence. He then attended the Canadian Forces Command & Staff College in Toronto in 1988, after which he was posted again to Northern Ireland, where he became Chief of Staff of 39th Infantry Brigade. He was promoted to Major on 30 September 1989.

James Everard
Major General James Rupert Everard CBE (born 1962) is the current Assistant Chief of the General Staff.
Educated at Uppingham School, James Everard was commissioned into the 17th/21st Lancers in June 1983. In 1995, as Chief of Staff, 4th Armoured Brigade, he was deployed to the United Nations Protection Force HQ, Sector South-West, and subsequently as part of the leading UK element of the NATO Implementation Force (IFOR) in Bosnia. Then in 1999 he became Military Assistant to the Commander of the Kosovo Force (KFOR). He became Commanding Officer of the Queen's Royal Lancers in September 2000 and deployed as part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.
In December 2005 he became Commander of 20th Armoured Brigade in which capacity he was deployed to Basra in Iraq and built himself a reputation targeting corruption. The brigade left Basra in November 2006 and relocated to Paderborn in Germany. He was appointed Director Commitments at Land Command in 2007,General Officer Commanding 3rd (UK) Mechanised Division in 2009 and Assistant Chief of the General Staff in April 2011.

John McColl
General Sir John Chalmers McCollKCB, CBE, DSO (b. 17 April 1952) is the current Lieutenant Governor of Jersey. He was sworn in on 26 September 2011. He was formerly Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
Educated at Culford School, McColl was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Anglian Regiment in 1973 and promoted to lieutenant on 8 September 1974. In 1989 he became a squadron commander in the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment. He held a variety of commands and military posts before commanding 1 Mechanised Brigade in 1997. In 1999 he became Assistant Chief of Staff at Land Command and in 2000 he was given command of 3rd (UK) Mechanised Division. In 2001 he was appointed the first leader of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.
In 2003 he came Commandant of the Joint Services Command and Staff College.
In 2004 he was appointed Deputy Commander and Senior British Representative in the Multinational Force Iraq, and at the end of that year he became Commander of Regional Forces at Land Command.

Korean War
The Korean War (Korean: 한국전쟁 or 조선전쟁, Hanja: 韓國戰爭 or 朝鮮戰爭; 25 June 1950 – 27 July 1953) was a war between the Republic of Korea (supported primarily by the United States of America, with contributions from allied nations under the aegis of the United Nations) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (supported by the People's Republic of China, with military and material aid from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). The Korean War was primarily the result of the political division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War at the end of World War II. The Korean Peninsula was ruled by the Empire of Japan from 1910 until the end of World War II. Robin Brims
Lieutenant General Robin Vaughan Brims CB, CBE, DSO is a retired British Army officer. He was Commander of the Field Army at Land Command from 2005 to 2007.
Robin Brims was born and grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne, but was educated at Winchester College.
He was commissioned into The Light Infantry in 1970. After various military appointments he took command of 3rd Battalion The Light Infantry from 1989 to 1991. He then took up an appointment at the Ministry of Defence before taking command of 24 Airmobile Brigade from 1995 to 1996 deploying to Bosnia as part of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps in 1995.
He went on to be Chief of Staff at Headquarters Northern Ireland and then Director of Plans & Resources. In 2000 he was appointed Commander of the Multi-national Division (South West) in Bosnia after which he became General Officer Commanding 1st (UK) Armoured Division which deployed to Iraq in 2003. For his service in Iraq he was given the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). In 2003 be became Deputy Chief of Operations at Permanent Joint Headquarters, Northwood, before becoming Commander of the Field Army in 2005. He retired from active duty in January 2008.

Major-General Anthony Arthur Milton CB OBE is a Royal Marines officer who became Commandant General Royal Marines.
Educated at King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford, Milton joined the Royal Marines in 1967 and subsequently became an equerry to the Duke of Edinburgh. He became Commanding Officer of 40 Commando in 1992 (in which role he was deployed to Northern Ireland and was appointed OBE), Commander of 3 Commando Brigade in 1995 and Director General for Joint Doctrine and Concepts (a post established following the Strategic Defence Review) in 1999. He went on to be Commandant-General Royal Marines in May 2002 and took over as British Maritime Commander for Operation Telic - the invasion of Iraq - in April 2003 before retiring in February 2004.

Operation (or Op) TELIC was the codename under which all British military operations in Iraq were conducted between the start of the Invasion of Iraq on 19 March 2003 and the withdrawal of the last remaining British forces on 22 May 2011. The bulk of the mission ended on 30 April 2009^[1]^[2] but around 150 troops, mainly from the Royal Navy, remained in Iraq until 22 May 2011 as part of the Iraqi Training and Advisory Mission.^[3]^[4] 46,000 troops were deployed at the onset of the invasion and the total cost of war stood at £9.24 billion as of 2010^[5]

Operation Telic was one of the largest deployments of British forces since World War II. It was only approached in size by the 1991 Operation Granby deployment for the Gulf War and the 1956 Operation Musketeer Suez Crisis deployment. It was considerably larger than the 1982 Operation Corporate in the Falklands War, which saw around 30,000 personnel deployed and the Korean War, which saw fewer than 20,000 personnel deployed.

Some 9,500 of the British servicemen and women who deployed on Operation Telic for the invasion and its aftermath were reservists, the vast majority of them from the Territorial Army.

Notice that British forces were deploying to the region was given in three separate Commons statements by Geoff Hoon Secretary of State for Defence. On 7 January, the deployment of naval forces and Royal Marines was announced. 20 January saw the land forces deployment announced and 6 February the air forces. They were ready in time for hostilities to start on 19 March. When compared with the deployment of forces prior to the Gulf War things proceeded a great deal faster, with the slowest deploying elements taking 10 weeks to get from base to combat readiness in the theatre.

The deployment used 64 British and foreign flagged merchant vessels.

Telic means a purposeful or defined action, but unlike the United States who called their equivalent military deployment Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Ministry of Defence uses a computer to generate its names so that they carry no overtly political connotations. As initial planning took place over the Christmas 2002 period, personnel jokingly referred to TELIC as standing for Tell Everyone Leave Is Cancelled.

Command structure [link]

The force was commanded by a three-star tri-service headquarters. The commander of the operation was Air Chief Marshal Brian Burridge, with Major General Peter Wall acting as his Chief of Staff. The headquarters was situated at CENTCOM headquarters in Qatar. The three services each had two-star commanders leading operations.

The Royal Navy commander was Rear Admiral David Snelson who had his headquarters ashore in Bahrain. The afloat Royal Navy commander was Commodore Jamie Miller, who had the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal as his flagship.

The British 1st Armoured Division was commanded by Major General Robin Brims. Three army brigades were assigned to the division. 16 Air Assault Brigade was commanded by Brigadier 'Jacko' Page, 7 Armoured Brigade by Brigadier Graham Binns and 102 Logistics Brigade by Brigadier Shaun Cowlam. The Royal Marines 3 Commando Brigade was also under the operational command of the division and was commanded by Brigadier (now Lieutenant General Sir) Jim Dutton.

The Royal Air Force commander was Air Vice Marshal Glenn Torpy. Major General Wall took over command of 1st Armoured Division on 1 May 2003. He was replaced as Chief of Staff by Major General Barney White-Spunner. Rear Admiral Snelson was succeeded by Major General Tony Milton, Commandant General Royal Marines as maritime forces commander on 16 April 2003.

On 11 July 2003, 1st Armoured Division handed control over south-east Iraq to 3rd Mechanised Division, Major General Wall was succeeded by Major General Graeme Lamb as commander of British ground forces in Iraq. Unlike the invasion period, by then there was a substantial presence from many nations other than America, Britain, Australia and Poland. In addition to British troops, 3rd Division now commanded Italian, Dutch, Danish, Czech, Lithuanian, Norwegian and New Zealand forces. 3rd Division handed over a new composite divisional headquarters on 28 December 2003. Major General Andrew Stewart took over from General Lamb as commander of British forces.

After the end of major operations, the main components of the British forces changed greatly. 3 Commando Brigade was withdrawn in early May and 16 Air Assault Brigade left later in the same month apart from a couple infantry battalions. 7 Armoured Brigade remained until relieved by 19 Mechanised Brigade at the same time as 3rd Division took over from 1st Division. 102 Logistics Brigade was relieved by 101 Logistic Brigade in late May Most of the RAF aircraft left the area with a few retained for patrols over Iraq and support of ground forces. British naval forces also returned to more usual levels, with two surface combatants, a tanker and a repair ship present in early July.

A further rotation of ground troops occurred in November 2003, with 19 Light Brigade relieved by 20th Armoured Brigade; 20th Armoured Brigade in its turn being relieved by 1 Mechanised Brigade. In April 2004, 20th Armoured Brigade turned over its responsibilities to 1 Mechanised Brigade and Lieutenant General John McColl was appointed deputy commander of occupation ground forces. By July 2004 the British area saw its fifth commander when Major General Bill Rollo took over. At the end of 2004 General Rollo was succeeded by Major General Jonathan Riley and in November of that year 4 Armoured Brigade rotated to replace 1 Mechanised Brigade.

In May 2005, 4 Armoured Brigade was replaced by 12 Mechanised Brigade with the handover of responsibility taking place on 30 May.

In May 2006 7th Armoured Brigade, the Desert Rats were relieved by 20th Armoured Brigade^[6] under the command of Brigadier James Everard.^[7]

October 2006 saw 19 Light Brigade take over^[8] from 20th Armoured Brigade.^[9]

1 Mechanised Brigade provided HQ and troops for Op TELIC 10, deploying to Iraq in June 2007. During that tour, both the PJCC and Basra Palace were handed back to Iraqi control. They handed over to 4th Mechanised Brigade on 1 December 2007.

The conflict saw over 100 fixed-wing aircraft and over 100 rotary-wing aircraft of virtually every type in the British inventory deployed. It also saw a 33 ship fleet, which was the largest taskforce deployed by the UK since the Falklands War. Some 120 Challenger 2 main battle tanks, 150 Warrior infantry fighting vehicles, 32 AS-90 self propelled 155 mm howitzers and 36 105 mm towed howitzers were deployed with the land forces, with reconnaissance vehicles and everything else that makes a modern mechanised and armoured force function.

During the post invasion phase, and following a number of British casualties blamed on inadequate equipment, a great deal of new equipment was purchased to help deal with the threats posed by insurgents. These included 166 armoured Pinzgauer Vectors PPV, 108 Mastiff PPV, 900 enhanced FV430 MkIII "Bulldogs", Desert Hawk UAV and 4 additional Britten-Norman Defender observation aircraft.

A total of 179^[10] British Armed Forces personnel died serving on Operation Telic between the start of the campaign in March 2003 and the end of operations in July 2009; 136 in hostile incidents and the remaining 43 under non-hostile circumstances. Full non-fatal casualty records are currently only available for the period after 1 January 2006. From that date, 3,598 British personnel were wounded, injured or fell ill (315 wounded in action); 1,971 of whom required aeromedical evacuation.^[11] However, these totals are likely to rise significantly as and when full records for 2003 to 2006 become available. As of 11 March 2007, more than 2100^[12] soldiers had returned from Iraq suffering from some form of mental illness, including PTSD.

The British television film The Mark of Cain depicted service of a fictional British Army unit, the 1st Battalion Northdale Rifles in Operation Telic, just after the end of combat operations and in the first stages of the occupation. A stage production based on the Scottish Black Watch Regiment was also created, drawing on experiences of veterans of the war. It was played out to much acclaim throughout Scotland in 2006.
