The UK taxpayers rather than the royal family will actually pay for the lavish USD 48 million ceremony in London. This is while Britons already pay some GBP 40 million a year to maintain the British royal family. April 29 has been declared a national holiday to mark Prince William's marriage to Kate Middleton in London's Westminster Abbey. The one-day holiday is also estimated to cost Britain about USD 10 billion. To compound the situation, the upcoming royal extravaganza comes at a time of worsening economic conditions in Britain, which is struggling with a massive budget shortfall. The British government is taking austerity measures in an attempt to contain the country's huge budget deficit. The eye-watering measures have already sparked violent protests nationwide. This is while more than 2.5 million Britons are also unemployed. Analysts say Prince William's wedding is reminiscent of the Queen's marriage to Prince Philip in 1947, which came against the backdrop of food rationing and post-World War II weariness. Some observers believe the British government is using the upcoming Royal Wedding to distract the Britons from their economic woes. Meanwhile, a recent poll shows Britons are far less excited about the Royal Wedding than the extensive flattery of media coverage suggests. Bucks Fizz Land Of Make Believe
"The Land of Make Believe" is a 1981 single by British band Bucks Fizz. It reached No.1 in the UK in early 1982 - the second single by the band to do so. The song was produced by Andy Hill with music by Hill and lyrics by ex-King Crimson member Peter Sinfield. Despite the apparent sugar-coated style of the song, Sinfield later claimed it was a subtle attack on Margaret Thatcher and her government's policy at the time.[1] The song was later covered by allSTARS* for a 2002 single release."The Land of Make Believe" was the second of three UK #1 singles for the British Eurovision winners Bucks Fizz, staying at the top for two weeks in January 1982. It remained on the charts for 16 weeks.[2] The song has a rocky edge, mixed with a spooky beginning, which entices the listener. The lyrics are based on a child's dream where ghostly voices lure the child outside to a world where everything is bright and happy, but the child resists. Characters, Superman and Captain Kidd are referenced in the lyrics. The close of the song features a nursery rhyme narrated by Abby Kimber, who was the 11-year old daughter of an executive of RCA Records and a member of the Minipops. This was an original piece, penned by Sinfield, and read: "I've got a friend who comes to tea, And no-one else can see but me, He came today, but had to go To visit you? You never know!" This Charter effectively ratified the supreme constitutional principles of: firstly, that the State exercised governance only with the full consent of those it governed; secondly, the right of the governed to invoke lawful rebellion was conceded formally by the State; and thirdly, that these fundamental rights extended for all time to us all (the 'communa tocius terre'). The Great Charter, codified by us, the people, gave the principles upon which the Resistance may be pursued. Article 61 of the Charter provides for the action of lawful rebellion. It refers to "communa tocius terre" (all the people of the land) - and does so in terms of Article 1 of the document, with specific reference to "all freemen of the realm". This Charter is still Law. It has not been repealed since it is not within the power of Parliament to set aside agreements between the people and the Monarchy. Our present system of government (of Parliament) is the consequence of this ancient and exemplary act of lawful rebellion. Parliament cannot therefore undo or deny to us our Customs and Constitution without committing the ultimate act of treason and betrayal. In May 2005 British Land announced that it had agreed to purchase Pillar Property Plc for £811 million in cash to boost its position in the out-of-town retail property sector.
Between 1970 and 2006 it was chaired by Sir John Ritblat, one of the best known figures in the British property sector, whose knighthood was announced in the Queen's new year's honours list for 2006.
Operations
As of 31 December 2009 the property portfolio was valued at £7.9 billion. More than half of the portfolio is invested in retail. This includes the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield, which is one of the largest in the UK, and a large amount of property which has been purchased from and leased back to major retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, House of Fraser and Asda. The other major group of assets is office property, most of which is in central London. This includes the Broadgate Estate near Liverpool Street station and Regent's Place near Euston Station. British Land has been involved in Broadgate, which is one of the largest development projects in London in recent decades and is still incomplete, since 1984, and after making a string of acquisitions on the estate over the years it acquired the last piece in 2003. In 2004 it received planning permission for a Richard Rogers designed skyscraper at 122 Leadenhall Street in the City of London which will become one of the tallest buildings in Western Europe. Construction of the tower began in October 2007 and completion was expected in 2011, but may be delayed because of the current economic downturn. The company have current proposals to extend Regent's Place as far as Osnaburgh Street with two new mixed use buildings designed by Terry Farrell and Wilkinson Eyre. In 2008 it was announced that the company will be the developer for the re-building of Euston Station. British Land have also proposed the construction of 103 Colmore Row in Birmingham.
Bonuses
In 2009 Chris Grigg was paid an annual bonus of £178,787. In the same year co-head of asset management, Andrew Jones, took home an annual bonus of £350,000 and Head of Offices Tim Roberts received an annual bonus of £310,000.
