Is a college degree worth the cost? You decide.
President Obama promotes the myth that everyone must go to college. That if you don't go, your life will be ruined -- that you will end up waiting tables, or trapped in some other mundane occupation. The truth is, even with a college degree, you may still end up waiting tables, you'll just begin your "career" four or five years later, tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Here is an example of some of the plumb jobs college grads were able to land during the Obama administration. Not just liberal arts majors mind you, but graduates with degrees in mathematics, robotics, neuroscience, engineering, accounting, business administration, economics, biology, communications, graphic design, marketing, and linguistics. Of course when it comes to education, it's not just the Obama administration that deserves a failing grade. For years, politicians of both parties have pandered to students by promising more aid in the form of direct or subsidized student loans. As a result, colleges and universities are freed from competitive forces that would otherwise keep tuition low. Easy access to cheap credit enables students to bid up tuition, benefiting the educational establishment at their expense. Politicians secure student's votes by promising relief from skyrocketing tuition by providing even more loans. Ironically, the loans themselves are the very reason tuition is so high in the first place. Before the Federal Government got involved, college degrees were much more affordable, and ...

FRONTLINE | Doctor Hotspot (full report) | PBS
www.pbs.org New Yorker writer and FRONTLINE correspondent Atul Gawande reports on a doctor in Camden, NJ, who actually seeks out the community's sickest — and most expensive — patients. Dr. Jeffrey Brenner is a local physician who some believe might have the model to solve one of America's most intractable problems: lowering the cost of health care. While analyzing medical billing data in Camden, NJ, he mapped out "hot spots" of the impoverished city's high-cost patients. By targeting unique care -- including home visits and social workers -- at the city's most costly patients, he developed a program that he argues has both lowered health care costs and provided better care in Camden. But can his model work for the rest of the nation? Dr. Brenner's organization, the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers (www.camdenhealth.org and other similar models were the subject of a January 2011 feature in The New Yorker by journalist and physician Dr. Atul Gawande (www.newyorker.com Watch more than 100 full FRONTLINE episodes at pbs.org

Adding Up the Costs of Bullying in the Workplace
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http President Obama held a White House conference in March to discuss ways to prevent bullying in school. But bullying is a problem not just among young people. Workplace bullying can involve threats, baseless criticism, discrimination and favoring some employees unfairly over others. Thirty-five percent of Americans in a survey said they had been bullied at some time at work. The poll by Zogby International and the Workplace Bullying Institute found that another fifteen percent have witnessed it. What some workers consider bullying by another worker or a supervisor might not always be true. But experts say productivity suffers in workplaces where employers tolerate or accept bullying. People take sick leave more often. Some take legal action. Jennifer Sandberg is a law partner in the Atlanta offices of Fisher & Phillips. She represents companies in labor cases. She says employers can avoid most problems simply by acting in a professional, businesslike way.In her words, "The best advice I can give to managers and supervisors is not to worry about the law, but to be sure that their behavior is professional."She says this means that everyone plays by the same set of rules. She points out that "there are still basic rules that every single person in an organization needs to follow."People who bully spend less time on productive work. They can make the workplace tense and unhealthy.Author and ...

Kenyan Spirit: Low cost housing answers IDP's prayers
www.ntv.co.ke Many would argue that Kenya is courting a crisis in housing given the current population growth rate of 3 per cent for its 40 million citizens. Despite efforts by the public and private sectors to plug in the housing deficit, estimated at about 150000 houses annually, the gulf between demand and supply is growing wider. The main reason for this can be traced to affordability. But as Alex Mwangi reports, a new model of financing has emerged that helps low income earners afford houses, here is his eye-opening report.

Long Haul Flight Report - CLE - PHL - LGA - JFK - DXB - CCU | Episode #2
(Full Trip Report With Narration and Annotations). Free Ticket on Emirates | Long Distance Flying Adventure: Episode #2 | The Flying Experience - www.youtube.com This is a last minute trip to see my ailing grandma - who raised me. I would like to imagine that through her blessings I got this free ticket to go see her. As a result of this last minute planning I had the take the first available flights and it turned out to be Cleveland - Philly - LGA (overnight) - JFK - Dubai - Calcutta (India). The Free Ticket Earlier while flying from New York to Calcutta, India I was asked if I would sit out that flight and take one the following night. In turn they gave me a free round trip ticket for the same exact sector to be used within 12 months. So, I took this flight using that free ticket. I did not believe it would be "free" because there are always some hidden cost etc but to my amazement - I didn't have to pay a penny. No tax either! Thank you . The Trip This trip took me three days to complete. I had to physically go to the Emirates New York office to pick the ticket up so an extra day was used up. The Cleveland to Philly sector was uneventful but once in Philly we ran into a lot of problems with delays (as you will see). Delays upon touchdown to the gate, delays once we boarded the flight....however all this meant a beautiful approach over New York City. We had by mistake washed the voucher for my free ride - so I was scared they won't accept it and issue me the ticket ...

Rethink Afghanistan War (Part 3): Cost of War
As we pay our tax bills, it seems an appropriate time to urge everyone to Rethink Afghanistan, a war that currently costs over $2 billion a month but hasn't made us any safer. Everyone has a friend or relative who just lost a job. Do we really want to spend over $1 trillion on another war? Everyone knows someone who has lost their home. Do we really want spend our tax dollars on a war that could last a decade or more? The Obama administration has taken some smart steps to counter this economic crisis with its budget request. Do we really want to see that effort wasted by expanding military demands? Watch Pulitzer Prize-winning authors and journalists, military and foreign policy experts, leading economists, and many more explain just how much the war in Afghanistan will cost us over how many years. We must urge Congress to raise key questions about this war at once. As FireDogLake blogger Siun recently wrote, "Once again we are planning a surge with no exit plan and a continued lack of concern for the most basic protection of the civilians in the land we claim to liberate." rethinkafghanistan.com

Spending More On Prisons Than Colleges - Report
"There's a direct relationship between how much money the Golden State spends on prisons and how much it spends on higher education, according to a report put out by the non-partisan public policy group California Common Sense. When one goes up, the other goes down. And, at least in California, the former has been going up a lot more than the latter. The study, entitled Winners and Losers: Corrections and Higher Education in California, looked at the state's general fund expenditures on corrections and higher education from the period between 1981 and 2011. Since 1980, higher education spending has decreased by 13 percent in inflation adjusted dollars, whereas spending on California's prisons and associated correctional programs has skyrocketed by 436 percent...".* Ana Kasparian and John Iadarola (host of TYT University and Common Room) break it down on The Young Turks. *Read more here from Aaron Sankin in The Huffington Post: www.huffingtonpost.com Support The Young Turks by Subscribing bit.ly Like Us on Facebook: www.fb.com Follow Us on Twitter: bit.ly Buy TYT Merch: theyoungturks.spreadshirt.com Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com

SR 13d March 31, 2010, NASA and Big Banks
Revised version -- President Obama cancelled the NASA manned space flight program. But the cost of resurrecting manned space flight is small compared with the hundreds of billions we are just giving away and will kill American space exploration leadership forever and cede it to the Chinese.

9 hours Capsule Hotel- A Monocle Report
Text from: www.ajanaku.com I love traveling! If it is for business or for pleasure, I just cant get enough! But what makes or breaks the trip is usually the hotel I am staying in. I have had the pleasure to stay in two great hotels these past few months, citizenM and The Leela. I think I have now found the next hotel on my list, 9 hours in Japan. 9 hours is a japanese capsule hotel with a difference. The latest Monocle report takes you on a tour trough the hotel and its great communication. It reminds me a lot of the concept behind citizenM, but with a twist. They expect you to stay just 9 hours in the hotel, 1 hour to shower, 7 hours to sleep, and 1 hour to rest. 1 hour shower! THANK YOU! For images go to www.ajanaku.nl

The Precious Metal Barter Tax and IRS Mission Creep!
check us out on Facebook www.facebook.com Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Welcome to Capital Account. Last night Barack Obama and Mitt Romney faced off in a debate on foreign policy, but foreign tax policy was not ever brought up. Today, we examine the unintended consequences of attempts to control foreign tax evasion, as we speak with The Daily Reckoning's Joel Bowman. He explains why the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), slated to go into effect in 2013, may prompt some investors to renounce their US citizenship. An aide to Sen. Max Baucus (D, Mont.), the Senate Finance Committee chairman who sponsored the 2009 FATCA bill, said, "Foreign tax evasion is a drain on the federal budget worth tens of billions of dollars, and it puts an unfair burden on law-abiding American taxpayers to fill that gap." On the other hand, FATCA arguably puts a costly compliance burden on banks all over the world. Forbes reports it could cost financial institutions $100 million in compliance and, according to the Wall Street Journal, a bank risks a penalty equivalent to 30% of its US income if even one account is overlooked. Of course, the smaller the bank the harder it's hit. The unintended consequence is that many foreign banks are now reluctant to deal with US citizens; according to recent reports, expats are finding themselves unable to open accounts or finding their accounts closed. We talk to Daily Reckoning Managing Editor Joel Bowman about the impact of the IRS's mission ...
