Kirkuk financing the future - euronews, reporter.
1921, the British estimated the population of the Kirkuk region to be 75000 Kurds, 35000 Turkomans, 10000 Arabs, 1400 Jews, and 600 Chaldeans. A League of Nations Committee that visited the Mosul vilayet in 1925 estimated that the Kurds comprised 63 percent of Kirkuk's population, the Turkomans, 19 percent, and the Arabs, 18 percent. After the Baath party consolidated power in 1963, the National Guard (al-Haras al-Qawmi), recruited Arab Baathists and Turkomans who systematically attacked ethnic Kurds. Between 1963 and 1988, the Baathist regime destroyed 779 Kurdish villages in the Kirkuk regionrazing 493 primary schools, 598 mosques, and 40 medical clinics.[10] In order to prevent the return of the Kurds, they burned farms and orchards, confiscated cattle, blew up wells, and obliterated cemeteries. In all, this ethnic cleansing campaign forced 37726 Kurdish families out of their villages. Given the average rural Kurdish family size of between five and seven people, this policy forced over 200000 Kurds to flee the region. The Kurds were not the regime's only victims. During the Iran-Iraq war, the central government destroyed about ten Shiite Turkoman villages south of Kirkuk. The last ethnic-breakdown census in Iraq was conducted in 1957, well before Saddam began his program to move Arabs to Kirkuk. That count showed 178000 Kurds, 48000 Turkomen, 43000 Arabs and 10000 Assyrian-Chaldean Christians living in the province

euronews reporter - Kirkuk: financing the future
www.euronews.net Kirkuk lies on the well of Iraqi oil. The ethnically diverse city contains 40 per cent of the country's oil exportation, while representing just 2.2 per cent of its territory. The town is located in the northern region of Iraq, around 250km from Baghdad. With the recent withdrawal of US troops, protecting this veritable goldmine is a high priority.

IRAK: El factor Kirkuk
¿Ocupación o vuelta a casa?

Iraq's Turkmen fight for identity in Kirkuk
The third largest ethnic group in Iraq, the Turkmen have long complained of discrimination, especially in the city of Kirkuk where the local government has been largely controlled by Kurdish parties. That began to change recently with a Turkmen politician elected as head of the provincial council, but many say more needs to be done to preserve the Turkmen identity. Al Jazeera's Rawya Rageh reports from Kirkuk.

Iraq blasts hit Baghdad, Kirkuk, Baquba and other cities kill at least 35
A series of deadly blasts has struck a number of Iraqi cities, killing at least 23 people and injuring many more, police say. Explosions were reported in the capital, Baghdad, and in Baquba, Kirkuk, Samarra, Dibis and Taji. Reports said that security forces appeared to be the main target. Iraq has seen a decline in the overall level of violence in recent years but still suffers bomb attacks on a daily basis. In Baghdad, a series of at least five blasts struck in various Shia neighbourhoods, killing seven people and wounding 20 others, reports say. Police say two car bombs went off in Kirkuk, 180 miles (290km) north of Baghdad. A suicide bomber killed a police officer in Baquba, an army officer said. The attacks, which unfolded over a period of an hour and a half, also appear to have targeted a convoy in which Health Minister Majeed Hamad Amin was travelling. He was not hurt.
