UK military to become 'strike breakers' 12.09.12
It is reported that the Armed Forces could be used to keep services running during national walkouts of public sector workers. The Times says that under plans being drawn up by David Cameron the military's success at the Olympics could see troops routinely used to fill in for striking workers. Jobs they could fill include prison officers, firefighters, immigration workers, fuel tanker drivers, and even train and Tube drivers, according to Whitehall sources quoted by the newspaper. It says the plans are still " being negotiated with Service chiefs" but are certain to " infuriate trade unions.". Yesterday they backed a motion at the TUC conference calling for a general strike that could involve millions of workers. Brendan Barber, the TUC general secretary, said "It is hard to think that the Armed Services would be happy to be used in this highly political way. It would mark the UK out from other similar advanced democracies." Whitehall officials are said to have confirmed discussions are underway, with a senior official saying "it is sensible emergency planning." A military source quoted in The Times said: "The military, uniquely well, analyse, plan and implement that plan under pressure. The Olympics has brought that home to another generation of politicians. "As before it would involve all three Services although the Army is always the majority supplier. Note that we have reservations for good historical reasons about strike breaking, so every case is scrutinised ...

Steve Gillan calls for general strike at the 2012 NSSN lobby of the TUC
Up to 1000 trade unionists and anti-cuts activists from all over the country attended the march, rally and lobby organised by the National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) which called on the Trades Union Congress, holding its 2012 conference, to coordinate action in a 24-hour general strike. Steve Gillan, general secretary of the POA prison officers' union, who moved the successful motion at the TUC calling for a general strike, explained that the Remploy closures were part of his union's motivation when they put forward Motion 5. The motion calls for "coordinated action where possible with far reaching campaigns including the consideration and practicalities of a general strike." When the Con-Dems are tearing the fabric out of society while bailing out the banks, the trade unions have a responsibility to give a lead, Steve said. It's not the first time the POA has called for a general strike, but this time, he explained, they have sought wider trade union support with the aim of letting both the government and New Labour know that enough is enough.

Marina Sitrin: Imagining a New General Strike
The call for a general strike on May 1 should not be solely about work, argues Marina Sitrin, a postdoctoral fellow at CUNY specializing in global mass movements. Instead, it should reshape our ideas about how society is built, as Sitrin explains in this video, by asking hard questions about class, consumption, work and society. Reimagining the General Strike
When May 1 rolls around, the proposed general strike will probably not strictly resemble famed general strikes of history. But the tactic is no less significant now than it used to be. In fact, a lot rides on this upcoming May Day. This video, featuring archival footage and the words of Marina Sitrin, Francis Fox Piven and John Nichols, explains why the general strike matters so much, not just for Occupy and labor but for the legitimacy of democracy itself. John Nichols: The Power of the General Strike
The idea of a general strike might seem a little outdated for today's global economy, but general strikes nevertheless demonstrate not just the power but also the necessity of coordinated action for social and economic justice. In this video, John Nichols, who grew up in a factory town, offers a brief overview of the history of unionization and the general strike and the impact of both on workers' rights. Gayatri Spivak: The General Strike Is Not Reformist
The idea of the general strike is not reformist simply because it demands changes to laws and working conditions. Rather, as Professor Gayatri Spivak of Columbia University argues in this video, the general strike is one vital tool in the array of tactics that must be used to fundamentally alter the relations between the classes. What's more, revolution will not come about through a "catastrophic change" as was once imagined, and that concept should be given a decent burial.

Violence flares during Spain general strike
Spanish workers angry at a labour reform the government calls an "unstoppable" necessity staged a general strike on Thursday, bringing factories and ports to a standstill and igniting flashes of violence on the streets. Tens of thousands of protesters packed a square in central Madrid to vent their anger at the labour reforms and deep spending cuts, while in Barcelona, police fired rubber bullets to disperse a crowd that had set bins ablaze on the sidelines of a demonstration. Thursday's strike was called by trade unions protesting against labour reforms and spending cuts which the conservative government says are needed to save the economy, and has resulted in some mild clashes and detentions of at least 58 people so far. Al Jazeera's Barnaby Phillips reports from Madrid.

General strike called for by Occupy Oakland after veteran Scott Olsen's injury
Mass peaceful non cooperation is the way! PROPOSAL: We as fellow occupiers of Oscar Grant Plaza propose that on Wednesday November 2, 2011, we liberate Oakland and shut down the 1%. We propose a city wide general strike and we propose we invite all students to walk out of school. Instead of workers going to work and students going to school, the people will converge on downtown Oakland to shut down the city. All banks and corporations should close down for the day or we will march on them. While we are calling for a general strike, we are also calling for much more. People who organize out of their neighborhoods, schools, community organizations, affinity groups, workplaces and families are encouraged to self organize in a way that allows them to participate in shutting down the city in whatever manner they are comfortable with and capable of. The whole world is watching Oakland. Let's show them what is possible. The Strike Coordinating Council will begin meeting everyday at 5pm in Oscar Grant Plaza before the daily General Assembly at 7pm. All strike participants are invited. Stay tuned for much more information and see you next Wednesday. www.occupyoakland.org Original upload: www.youtube.com Oakland protesters organize citywide strike

Spain braces for general strike
www.euronews.com Spanish unions hold their first general strike since 2010 on Thursday, and as with two years ago the reasons for downing tools are the same; the government's austerity programme. In the meantime that government has changed, with the right-wing - organised labour's arch enemies - now in power. Polls show only 30 percent of the population believe it is the right time to strike. "There's a lot of propaganda being used to put people to sleep, like saying 'the strike won't do anything'," said Ignacio Fernandez Toxo, the General Secretary of Spain's biggest trade union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO). "We need the freedom, the right to safe employment, just as we need the right to exercise a general strike," said the General Workers Union (UGT) leader Candido Mendez. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has already faced two strikes and scores of demonstrations involving tens of thousands of people since taking office, and has shown no sign of being willing to buckle under pressure. However it is the first general strike for the Popular Party to deal with since it regained power. And while students and the young unemployed prepared their marching banners, officials in Brussels were getting ready to keep the closest possible eye on any Spanish backsliding from proposed extra spending cuts. It appears Rajoy has nowhere to retreat to, even if he wanted to. Train, bus and air traffic are expected to be among the worst-hit sectors on Thursday. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook ...

General Strike in Spain/Huelga general: Disturbios en Barcelona 29M
Spanish workers staged a general strike to protest the government's latest labour reforms on March 29, 2012 in Barcelona, Spain. The day general strike culminated in massive demonstrations throughout Spain. Hundreds of thousands of people have supported the protests. The main marches in Madrid and Barcelona, have brought together 170000 people and 275000 people respectively. The tranquility is broken, however, in Barcelona, where they have recorded strong clashes between police and demonstrators. Containers were torched in Barcelona and several banks and shops were attacked by demonstrators protesting against the government of Mariano Rajoy, president of Spain by the new labor reform. Spain is currently experiencing a of the toughest economic crises affecting millions of families currently on unemployment.(Footage by Elkin Cabarcas/Fundaudiovisuales).

Police teargas Oakland protesters at May Day general strike
Around 400 protesters have been confronted by police who used tear gas, causing hundreds to scatter on May 1. Some activists blocked streets throughout the day and vandalized two banks, a news van and police vehicle. Nine people were taken into custody in Oakland, California, after hundreds of people took to the streets. Police reportedly used Taser against at least one of them. Officers ordered protesters out of the street after firing the tear gas and "flash-bang" grenades. RT's correspondent Madina Kochenova has the latest from Los Angeles. General Strike 1926
After full employment during the 1914-1918 War, the 1920s brought a return to high unemployment. It didn't suit those with capital to employ workers so the feeling of betrayal along with hunger and misery prevailed. Protest marches were organised and people started to vote for Union-backed candidates for Government. In 1924 the first Labour Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald, came to power but the compromises he made to work within the capitalist economy prevented any socialist progress. The Government collapsed in 1925 and the Conservatives came back into power and ordered a reduction in wages along with a threat to issue weapons to selected anti-strike civilians.
