West Sumatra
West Sumatra is composed of three regions: volcanic highlands, a long coastal plain and a series of jungle-covered islands just offshore. Much of the province is still wilderness; virgin jungle inhabited by elephants, leopards and rhinos. It is the traditional homeland of the Minangkabau, who are known far and wide through the archipelago for their shrewd business sense, their fiery-hot dishes and ancient matriarchal customs. The women own property and the men leave home to seek their fame and fortune. Travelling is considered a mark of success and West Sumatrans and their Minang or Padang restaurants are found in all major towns across the nation. The people are hospitable and eloquent, with a poetic style of speech. West Sumatran days are filled with colourful ceremonies and festivals. Legend has it the Minangkabau are descendants of the youngest son of Alexander the Great, King Maharajo Dirajo. West Sumatra's centre of culture and tourism is Bukittinggi, nestled in the highlands north of the provincial capital of Padding. Surrounded by high mountains, picturesque valleys and lakes, Bukittinggi is considered by many tourists to be the most hospitable city in all Sumatra. Padang Tabing Airport is the main gateway to West Sumatra and serviced by local airlines. The MV. Kerens sails every two weeks for Jakarta from Teluk Bayur harbor. Smaller vessels from Muara harbor sail to small towns along the entire west coast of Sumatra. Regular bus services run between Padang ...

Minangkabau Women Fighting Art
To learn more: www.pandeka.com In Minangkabau culture woman also learn how to defend and martial art is not only the world of man. There are many woman masters and students in various styles around West-Sumatra. In former times woman were also famous warriors and they defended their home, clans and families. Silek is the specific martial art of Minangkabau people, there are special styles for woman called .. Batino style. They have their own movements and choreographies for presentations. The Minangkabau ethnic group is indigenous to the highlands of West Sumatra. Their culture is matrilineal , with property and land passing down from mother to daughter, while religious and political affairs are the province of men (although some women also play important roles in these areas). The name Minangkabau has various interpretations. One is that the name comes from the phrase "winning water buffalo" ("menang kerbau" in Bahasa Indonesia, Melayu ). The story is that in ancient times, there was a war between the people of West Sumatra and its neighboring kingdom. The neighboring kingdom proposed a contest: each side would provide a water buffalo , the two water buffalo would fight to the death, and whichever side's water buffalo won the fight would be considered the winner of the war. Another interpretation of the name Minang kabau is that it derives from "pinang kabhu", which means "original home".

Saluang di Lapau
The Saluang is a traditional music instrument of the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is made of thin bamboo or "talang" (Schizostachyum brachycladum), with only 4 holes. The dimension of Saluang is 3-4 cm in diameter and 40-60 cm in length. It is related to the Suling of other parts of Malay archipelago. Saluang player can play that music instrument without interrupting for taking breath from start to end of song. They have developed special breath technique in blowing that instrument without stopping for breathing in ( Mampasalisiahan Hangok). Minangkabau people believe that talang which is collected from rack of clothes dryer or found drifting in the river is a good material for making saluang. Traditionally Minangkabau people also use talang as a container for sticky rice food (lamang, lemang) and as horizontal rack for drying clothes (jemuran kain) under sunlight . Styles of Saluang tunes for example : Ratok Suayan, Koto Tuo, Salayo and Pauah. Singgalang style is quite difficult for the beginners. High skilled Saluang players can play many styles and the audience can request any style to them. In the past, Minangkabau people believed that Saluang players have a pitunang (mantra) or magic power for hypnotizing the audience. That mantras are called Pitunang Nabi Daud. Minangkabau cuisine / Padang food
The cuisine of the Minangkabau people is commonly called Padang food, due to it being the capital and largest city of the region. Padang restaurants are common throughout the country and are famous for their spicy food and their unique way of serving it. Padang food is usually cooked once per day, and all customers choose from those dishes, which are left out on display until no food is left. It is served in small portions of various dishes, but constituting, with rice, a complete meal. In a Padang-style restaurant, the table will quickly be set with dozens of small dishes filled with highly-flavored foods such as curried fish, fried tempe, stewed greens, chili eggplant, curried beef liver, fried chicken, and of course, sambals, the spicy sauces ubiquitous at Indonesian tables. Customers take - and pay for - only what they want from this array of dishes. Food safety is generally a concern, as many customers take food out of communal dishes with their hands, dishes which will be served to subsequent customers. The best known Padang dish is randang or rendang, a spicy meat stew. Soto Padang (crispy beef in spicy soup) is local residents' breakfast favorite, meanwhile Sate (beef satay in curry sauce served with ketupat/ Katupek) is a treat in the evening. www.pandeka.com

950. Takana Jo Kampuang - For the people of West Sumatra
This video is for the brothers and sisters of Hengky Hidayat whose home has been destroyed and for all the others who have suffered through the terrible earthquake in West Sumatra. I have used illustrations from the internet to accompany this traditional Minang song, which is Track 17 of my CD "Laws of Chance". I first heard this song while travelling in Minangkabau, and immediately knew I wanted to learn it. It is about someone who is homesick for his village - Kampuang - similar to "Kampong" in Bahasa Indonesia. I have seen the lyrics written differently, but this is how they were written out for me by a young lady I met in Bukittinggi. Kampuang den jauh di mato Gunung sansay baku liliang Takana jo kawan - kawan den lamo Sangke basuliang - suliang Pan duduk nyo nan elok Nan suko bagotong royong Sakit sanang samo-samo di raso Den takana jo kampuang. Takana jo kampuang Ibu, ayah, adiak sadonyo Rasu ma imbau-imbau den pulang Den takana jo kampuang. The meaning is roughly as follows: My village so far away Surrounded by mountains I remember my old friends And hiw we played our flutes together I remember the kindness of our people Helping and sharing In happy times and sad times I remember my village I remember my village My mother, my father, my little brothers and sisters I hear them calling me home I remember my village You can see a playlist of all my a capella songs here: www.youtube.com You can see a playlist of my songs from Asia, Africa and the Middle East here: www ...
