Renegade Jewish Settlers - Israel/Palestine
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv Ranging from plywood shacks to large suburban housing complexes, 300000 Israeli settlers now occupy outposts along Palestine's West Bank, increasing tension and grinding the two-state solution to a halt. "Jewish people have been here for 5000 years. We were given the opportunity to come back," one settler states. Originally a temporary occupation of Palestinian territories, illegal Jewish squatting outposts are on the rise, causing the fragile peace process to grind to a halt. At a thriving "counter-terrorism" shooting range, Jewish settlers can easily get their hands on guns, unlike their Palestinian neighbours. "We've got to be alert: Arabs infiltrate our settlements to steal and get information." As tensions escalate, the stand-off looks unlikely to change. "Settlers have learned that if they squat a site long enough, Israel will give them its approval, its infrastructure and its security." VBS.tv

Al-Aqsa Anger: 'Judaization of Jerusalem targets Islamic relics'
Israel has a secret agenda of destroying the Arab-Islamic identity of Jerusalem, and forcing the Muslim population out of the city and their land, Dr. Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, former Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine told RT. Sabri accused Israeli authorities of the deliberate Judaization of Jerusalem, and of attempting to gradually take control of the historic Al-Aqsa Mosque. Working Women in the Palestinian Territories | Global 3000
Women still fall victim to discrimination and are disadvantaged in many parts of the world. The organization "UN WOMEN" is aimed at giving them more focused support than in the past. They are also fostering the continuation of projects that have already been successful. One of these is the Sabaya Program, which is active in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Sabaya helps women to find work and to improve the societal status of women and young girls through employment.

The Cafe - The enemy within?
Israel has always felt under siege, but its internal problems could be more damaging than any external threat. The rift is between the secular and the ultra-Orthodox, who believe any compromise with Arabs is unacceptable. Zealous immigrants are boosting the extreme right and militant settlers are pushing further into Palestinian territory. Last summer, a new social movement was born demanding an end to corruption, lower inflation and cuts to public services. Almost half a million Israelis took to the streets to protest. It was the biggest wave of demonstrations in the country's history. Meanwhile, the occupation of the Palestinian territories and the apartheid system inflicted on Palestinians living in Israel continues. Israel proclaims itself to be a secular, democratic and Jewish state - but can it credibly live up to such claims?

Cameras vs Fists: Can technology save Palestinians?
The Israeli government has vowed to end systematic attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the Occupied Territories, but has done little to curb the violence. Now an Israeli human rights group is using technology to tackle the problem. Israel is continuing construction of new homes for its settlers in occupied Palestinian territory, despite numerous calls from the UN and many national governments to stop the practice, which contravenes international law. The issue is one of the major stumbling blocks to peace negotiations between the two sides. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to crack down on Jewish extremism in the West Bank, but with his government supporting settlement expansion, his promise means precious little to those on the receiving end of the violence. The reality on the ground is that Palestinians living close to those settlements are facing daily aggression on the part of their Israeli neighbors, while the Israeli security forces turn a blind eye to the attacks. Some Israelis are critical of the policy which allows this to continue. The Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem is doing its part in trying to curb the violence. It has distributed cameras to dozens of Palestinians to capture glimpses of everyday reality in the occupied zone. The goal is to gather evidence and hold Israeli settlers and soldiers attacking Palestinians accountable, reports RT's Paula Slier. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

After boarding the bus without incidents, the bus was stopped at the Hizme checkpoint, where all the activists were arrested and violently forcibly removed from the bus.

Christians in Israel for Palm Sunday 2012 Visit Church of Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem's Old City
Christians from all over the world came to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre within the modern-day walls of Jerusalem's Old City to celebrate 2012's Palm Sunday and pray at the site where Jesus was crucified and resurrected. On this day almost 2000 years ago, Jesus triumphantly entered the Holy City as his followers greeted him waving palm fronds and laying them down in his path as a sign of respect and a symbol of victory. This marked the beginning of the Passion of Jesus, the final week before his resurrection. For this Palm Sunday, Christians gathered for mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre which houses the sites where Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected. Several denominations held services inside the cavernous, fourth-century church. Eastern Orthodox Christians were the only ones absent because they will celebrate Palm Sunday a week later in accordance with the Julian calendar. Israel estimates 125000 Christian tourists arrived for Holy Week celebrations which will climax next week on Easter Sunday. Led by local youth bands, hundreds walked from the Mount of Olives into Jerusalem's Old City, attempting to retrace the route Jesus himself took. Jesus rode a donkey, and not a horse, to show that he came in peace instead of war. The influx of tourists is a boost for the local Christian communities in Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories. Christians have often been caught in conflict between Palestinian Muslims and Israelis, and although there is a ...

Noam Chomsky answers questions from Ken Loach, Paul Laverty, Alice Walker, Chris Hedges, John Berger and Amira Hass
Frank Barat asks Prof Noam Chomsky 6 questions that were sent by Alice Walker, John Berger, Ken Loach, Paul Laverty, Amira Hass and Chris Hedges.
Interview starts with question from John Berger:
Political practice often surprises political vocabulary. For example, the recent Revolution in the Middle East is said to demand Democracy. Can we find more adequate words?
Isn't the use of the old and frequently betrayed words a way of absorbing the shock, instead of welcoming it and transmitting it further?
05:20: Chris Hedges
Julien Benda in The Treason of Intellectuals argued that it is only when intellectuals are not in the pursuit of practical aims or material advantages that they can serve as a conscience and a corrective. Can you address the loss of philosophers, religious leaders, writers, journalists, artists and scholars whose lives were once lived in direct opposition to the realism of the multitudes and what this has meant for our intellectual and moral life?
11:51: Amira Hass
Have the uprisings in the arab states made you change, revise some of your past evaluations? Have they - and how - affected your notions of, for example :masses, hope, facebook, poverty, western intervention, surprise?
22:06: Ken Loach
How do we overcome sectariasnism on the left?
25:44: Paul Laverty
There has probably never been a time where there has been such concentration of wealth and power in so few hands. The powerful are sophisticated in maintaining this state of affairs, but perhaps we use this too as an excuse to hide our shortcomings on the left. What do you think has been lacking in our imaginative effort to build a mass international campaign to democratise resources, and challenge Corporate Power? Can you imagine a time where we can organise our lives and economies successfully on a co-operative basis, rather than a competitive one?
35:05: Alice Walker
I believe that a one state solution to the Palestine/Israel impasse is inevitable; and more just than a two state solution could ever be. This is because I don't believe Israel will ever give up trying to control Palestinians, whether citizens of Israel or those living in the occupied territories. Under a two state solution there would be Israel and a Palestinian bantustan.
I have been struck by your dismissal of the one state idea as something almost absurd, and would like to understand why you see it this way. Is there no hope that Israelis and Palestinians might live together as white and black people do, after the fall of apartheid, in South Africa?

EXTRACT_PALESTINIAN_TERRITORIES
This was shot in July 2007 in the middle of the old city of Nablus, a city in the Occupied Palestinian West Bank.
The boy in the footage is Shamekh, a music student and a volunteer ambulance driver, and we are in the living room of his aunty and uncle's house. Shamekh's family are refugees from Jerusalem, and even though only a few hours drive, they have never been given permits by Israel to go back - even to visit.
This day was a celebration of five Palestinians who were killed by the Israeli army who regularly invade Nablus. All of a sudden a fight between two men turned into a mass brawl. People were throwing chairs at each other and at first just directing their machine guns in the air, but then they started running down the back allies and we could hear shots.
At one point, some fighters came up to the house. Shamekh told me to hide the camera in a draw and that if anyone asked, I was French. I asked him why and he said they just like the French more. I pointed out to him that earlier that day he had assured me there was no problem to come and film. He said that in Nablus things change very quickly.
When the men came up, they were carrying AK47s and hand guns. They looked at me, but seemingly uninterested in who I was, they just requested some mint tea from Shamekh's aunty and then went back downstairs.
After the fighting calmed down - in that area at least - I wanted to leave Nablus. It was a Friday, the Muslim day of prayer, so the Hawara checkpoint was not as crowded as usual. The checkpoint is like a cattle cage and I had seen it before packed with what must have been over 300 men and woman with literally barely enough room to breathe. The Israeli soldiers manning this checkpoint told me they had closed it because of a suspected suicide bomber.
This may or may not have been true, but what is a fact is that when I was in Nablus it was a city-turned-prison. People such as Shamekh crave the opportunity to be free from an occupation that stops them studying what they want to study, seeing friends they want to see or visiting the city their family were forced out of.
So on this day, like so many other days, they could not leave. I could, because I am a westerner (I even get soldiers curious of which part of London I am from - "I visited Hendon", one said to me). But Shamekh, he is a "suspected suicide bomber" or a "terror threat".
It is important to say here that the checkpoint I am writing about is not Palestinian land bordering Israeli land. It is Palestinian land bordering Palestinian land. So, if these soldiers are there for security, monitoring Palestinians going only within Palestinian land, whose safety are they protecting? Here, it may help to see a map of the illegal settlements that are part of Israel's continued colonisation of the Palestinian West Bank www.btselem.org/Download/Settlements_Map_Eng.PDF. Since 1967, Israel has been building homes on Palestinian land as part of the plan for "Eretz Israel", or, "Greater Israel". These settlements often look like little America suburban communities, with pretty red roof tops and swimming pools (they consume 5 times more water than the Palestinians) and the Israeli government even offer financial incentives such as reduced taxes. 80% of these Jewish settlers come from Europe or USA and these are often called "Economic Settlers". However, there are many, particularly those around Nablus and Hebron, who are believers in Eretz Israel. One tour guide in Hebron, who claimed that God gave them this land, once said to me, "there should be a completion of the transfer of Palestinians….they should go to Jordon, Egypt or Lebanon…because this is where the Jewish people belong."
At the time of filming, in July 2007, there were 605 of these checkpoints and only 26 of them were on the border between Israel and "Palestine" (i.e. the Occupied Palestinian West Bank). I have witnessed both physical and mental torture, as is predictable when you give young men and women big guns and power and tell them they are in control of a population who they resent and who resent them being there. I have seen teenagers made to stand in the 40 degree sun by an Israeli border police woman while she left and made jokes in Hebrew, and when they attempted to step a foot back into the shade she would stop smiling and order her junior soldier to point his gun at them. The boys did not complain or even change expression. They seemed used to it. I once saw an old man who must have been in his 70s give the wrong card by accident to a soldier. He tried to take it back and explain he had pulled the wring card out of his wallet but the soldier started shouting and grabbed the card anyway. After a few minutes of absolutely useless checking of this man's card, he threw it into his face and it dropped to the floor. Again, the man did not complain or change expression. He just picked his card up and stared out of the window. For more information on checkpoints, there is a grou

Palestinian Freedom Riders to Challenge Segregation By Riding Settler Buses to Jerusalem: 11.15.11 Palestinian activists will reenact the US Civil Rights Movement's Freedom Rides to the American South by boarding segregated Israeli public transportation in the West Bank to travel to occupied East Jerusalem. Palestinian activists will attempt to board segregated Israeli public transportation headed from inside the West Bank to occupied East Jerusalem in an act of civil disobedience inspired by the Freedom Riders of the US Civil Rights Movement in the 60's. Fifty years after the US Freedom Riders staged mixed-race bus rides through the roads of the segregated American South, Palestinian Freedom Riders will be asserting their right for liberty and dignity by disrupting the military regime of the Occupation through peaceful civil disobedience. The Freedom Riders seek to highlight Israel's attempts to illegally sever occupied East Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank, and the apartheid system that Israel has imposed on Palestinians in the occupied territories. Several Israeli companies, among them Egged and Veolia, operate dozens of lines that run through the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, many of them subsidized by the state. They run between different Israeli settlements, connecting them to each other and cities inside Israel. Israeli detention of Palestinian children
An important report published by a group of British lawyers, funded by the Foreign Office has highlighted the inhumane treatment of Palestinian child prisoners by Israel. In the report's damning conclusion, the lawyers stated that the reluctance to treat Palestinian child prisoners in accordance with international law may stem from the Israeli view that every Palestinian child is a 'potential terrorist' which leads to a 'spiral of injustice'. It shows how Israeli settlers and Palestinians are subject to different laws, so a Palestinian child can be held for up to 90 days without access to a lawyer and for 188 days without charge, whereas an Israeli child could only be held for two and 40 days respectively. When arrested, Palestinian children are not informed of their right to silence or a lawyer and are routinely held in solitary confinement. At present, 192 Palestinian children are imprisoned in Israeli jails, 39 of these are under the age of 16.
