The 66-minute cut of the film is now available on DVD and VHS from the Harry Smith Archives. It is sometimes screened at one-time cinema events, often with some kind of live music instead of the film's soundtrack (which consists solely of sound effects). A recent revival featured a score by laptop musician Flying Lotus.

This film is screened at John Zorn's Essential Cinema concerts, where a group of musicians perform behind the film. In the liner notes to Naked City's "Heretic" album it says "This record is dedicated to Harry Smith. Mystical Animator, Pioneer Ethnomusicologist, Hermetic Scholar, Creator of Heave + Earth Magic, one of the greatest films of all time."

Plot

The first part depicts the heroine's toothache consequent to the loss of a very valuable watermelon, her dentistry and transportation to heaven. Next follows an elaborate exposition of the heavenly land, in terms of Israel and Montreal. The second part depicts the return to Earth from being eaten by Max Müller on the day Edward VII dedicated the Great Sewer of London.

Greek ''khthon'' is one of several words for "earth"; it typically refers to the interior of the soil, rather than the living surface of the land (as ''Gaia'' or ''Ge'' does) or the land as territory (as ''khora'' (χώρα) does). It evokes at once abundance and the grave.

The pronunciation is somewhat awkward for English speakers. Most dictionaries, such as the OED, state that the first two letters should be pronounced as , ; others, such as the AHD, record these letters as silent, . The modern pronunciation of the Greek word "χθόνιος" is , although the Classical Greek pronunciation would have been something similar to .

Chthonic and Olympian

Some chthonic cults practised ritual sacrifice, which often happened at night time. When the sacrifice was a living creature, the animal was placed in a ''bothros'' ("pit") or ''megaron'' ("sunken chamber"). In some Greek chthonic cults, the animal was sacrificed on a raised ''bomos'' ("altar"). Offerings usually were burned whole or buried rather than being cooked and shared among the worshippers.

Not all chthonic cults were Greek, nor did all cults practice ritual sacrifice; some performed sacrifices in effigy or burnt vegetable offerings.

Cult type versus function

Also, Demeter was worshipped alongside Persephone with identical rites, and yet occasionally was classified as an "Olympian" in late poetry and myth. The absorption of some earlier cults into the newer pantheon versus those that resisted being absorbed is suggested as providing the later myths.

In between

Moreover, a few deities aren't easily classifiable under these terms. Hecate, for instance, was typically offered puppies at crossroads – a practice neither typical of an Olympian sacrifice nor of a chthonic sacrifice to Persephone or the heroes. Because of her underworld roles, Hecate is generally classed as chthonic.

References in psychology and anthropology

Gender has a specific meaning in cultural anthropology. Teresa del Valle in her book ''Gendered Anthropology'' explains "there are male and female deities at every level. We generally find men associated with the above, the sky, and women associated with the below, with the earth, water of the underground, and the chthonic deities." This was by no means universal and in Ancient Egypt the main deity of the earth was the male god Geb. Geb's female consort was named Nut, otherwise known as the sky.

In 2007, he announced that he signed with Warp Records. Following his Warp debut, the six-track ''Reset EP'', he became one of the label’s cornerstone artists and released his second album, titled ''Los Angeles'', on June 10, 2008. His third album, ''Cosmogramma'', was released on May 3, 2010, in the UK and May 4, 2010, in the US. In January 2011, ''Cosmogramma'' won in the Dance/Electronica Album category in The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards.

Recently, Flying Lotus collaborated with the Ann Arbor Film Festival in the performance of a live scoring of the 1962 avant-garde film ''Heaven and Earth Magic''. In a post-viewing interview with the audience, Flying Lotus said he was unsure whether or not a recording of the performance (or a recreation of it) would be publicly released, but he would be enthusiastic toward similar projects in the future. He was chosen by Battles to perform at the ATP Nightmare Before Christmas festival that it co-curates in December 2011 in Minehead, England.

In January 2011, Flying Lotus won The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards for his video "MmmHmm" in the Video, Short Form category. Flying Lotus will be collaborating with R&B; singer Erykah Badu on new material for her next album.

Byron Kathleen Mitchell (née Reid), better known as Byron Katie, born December 6, 1942, is an American speaker and author who teaches a method of self-inquiry known as "The Work of Byron Katie" or simply as "The Work."

Biography

"I discovered that when I believed my thoughts, I suffered, but that when I didn’t believe them, I didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Freedom is as simple as that. I found that suffering is optional. I found a joy within me that has never disappeared, not for a single moment."

According to journalist Allison Adato, soon afterward people started seeking Katie out and asking how they could find the freedom that they saw in her. People from her town, and eventually from elsewhere, came to meet her, and some to even live with her.

Katie is not aligned with any particular religion or tradition. She is married to the writer and translator Stephen Mitchell, who co-wrote her first book, ''Loving What Is'' and her third book, ''A Thousand Names for Joy.''

Katie calls her method of self-inquiry "The Work." She describes it as an embodiment, in words, of the wordless questioning that had woken up in her on that February morning. Adato further writes that as reports spread about the transformations people felt they were experiencing through The Work, Katie was invited to present it publicly elsewhere in California, then throughout the United States, and eventually in Europe and across the world. She has taught her method to people at free public events, in prisons, hospitals, churches, corporations, shelters for survivors of domestic violence, universities and schools, at weekend intensives, and at her nine-day "School for The Work."
