Boris Christoff - Aria of Attila
Boris Christoff (Bulgarian: Борис Христов) (May 18, 1914, Plovdiv, Bulgaria June 28, 1993, Rome, Italy) was a Bulgarian opera singer, one of the greatest basses of the 20th century. Christoff demonstrated early his singing talent and sang as a boy at the choir of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia. In the late 1930s he graduated in law and started on a career as a magistrate. He, however, continued singing in his spare time in the Gusla Chorus in Sofia, achieving an enormous success as the chorus soloist in 1940. Thanks to a government grant, Christoff left in May 1942 for Italy where he was tutored for two years in the core Italian bass repertoire by the great baritone of an earlier generation, Riccardo Stracciari. Christoff's vocal instrument was of excellent quality with a memorably distinctive tone. While not of huge proportions, his voice had no trouble making an impact in big auditoria such as that of the Met. Owing to his matchless stage presence and strong dramatic temperament, he emerged as a worthy heir to the grand tradition of Slavonic basses as exemplified by Fyodor Stravinsky, Lev Sibiriakov, Vladimir Kastorsky, Feodor Chaliapin, Alexander Kipnis and Mark Reizen, among others. He sang mostly in Verdi and the Russian repertoire, although he also proved to be a refined performer of vocal chamber music. Among his most famous roles were those of Tsar Boris (Mussorgsky - Boris Godunov), Philip II (Verdi - Don Carlo), Mephistopheles (Gounod - Faust and Boito ...

Песня Варяжского гостя, САДКО alias Song of the Viking Guest, Sadko Nikolai Rimski-Korsakov, music and lyrics Philharmonia Orchestra Issay Dobrowen, conductor Recorded 04.05.1950, HMV О скалы грозные дробятся с ревом волны И, с белой пеною крутясь, бегут назад.

100 Greatest Singers: BORIS CHRISTOFF
THIS PROJECT IS RESERVED ONLY FOR THE GREATEST! Boris Christoff? What do you feel to find him in this collection? Please comment! Boris Christoff, Bass (1914-1993) Giuseppe Verdi - Don Carlo Ella giammai m´amo (Recorded 1954) My personal opinion: Act III of Verdi´s great opera "Don Carlo" begins with a moving scene of King Philipp II. At dawn, he sits alone in his study, thoughtful, reflecting about himself. He mistrusts his wife Elisabeth, the former fiancee of his son Carlo. A tragical situation, Elisabeth his wife, Carlo his son. "She never loved me" (Ella giammai m´amo) he ponders. He wishes more knowledge of human nature. "Sleep I will found when I will be laid to rest". When bulgarian bass Boris Christoff opened Philipp´s great monolog, he sang with "Morbidezza" and "sotto voce", with a deeply hurt and stifled cry in his voice. Christoff didn´t depend on pure melodiousness, he infolded his voice with a tragic that impressed more than only the disillusion of a cheated man. Even in his pain, he stayed great in public life - the show must go on! The best recordings of Christoff are full of scenic expressiveness, that gave his figures different faces. Christoff as Philipp is totally different from Christoff as Basilio. John Steane: "His first recordings established him brilliant as successor of Chaliapin. They gave us a Boris Godunov, who very soon sang with complete authority, with comparable intensity and with a voice that was distinctive and beautiful, strenght and ...
