Mylast full day in Europe had started. June 13, 2010 was a Sunday, and I felt like getting out of the hustle and bustle of Rome to check out a quieter and smaller town in the countryside. After some research I settled on the medieval town of Orvieto which is located about an hour from Rome by train. Shortly after 10 am I arrived at the train station in Orvieto and took the funicular up the steep mountainside to the old medieval walled town which is located on a volcanic crag. The city was nice and quiet and I strolled past several small public parks that provided phenomenal lookout points of the countryside that was stretching out below. About 20 minutes later I arrived on the Piazza del Duomo, and was awestruck by Orvieto's Cathedral, a true medieval masterpiece. Started in 1290, the building is renowned for its lavish multi-coloured façade frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries. The exterior of the church consists of strips of white travertine and black basalt which give it a very unique appearance. The downtown of Orvieto is characterized by a maze of narrow cobble-stoned streets full of churches. After an extensive stroll through this atmospheric town I sat down for lunch at a nice pizzeria and then headed back to the main square. By that time, the piazza had filled up with classic cars, including Ferraris, old BMWs and Porsches, for the Modena Cento Ore Classic Rally.
