Alawites
The Alawites, also known as Alawis (ʿAlawīyyah Arabic: علوية), are an Islamic sect, centered in Syria, who follow a branch of the Twelver school of Shia Islam but with syncretistic elements. Alawites revere Ali (Ali ibn Abi Talib), and the name "Alawi" means followers of Ali (they are generally considered Ghulat). The sect is believed to have been founded by Ibn Nusayr during the 9th century. For this reason, Alawites are sometimes called "Nusayris" (Nuṣayrīyyah Arabic: نصيرية), though this term has come to have derogatory connotations in the modern era; another name, "Ansari" (al-Anṣāriyyah), is believed to be a mistransliteration of "Nusayri". Today, Alawites represent 12 percent of the Syrian population and are a significant minority in Turkey and northern Lebanon. There is also a population living in the village of Ghajar in the occupied Golan Heights. They are often confused with the Alevis of Turkey. Alawites form the dominant religious group on the Syrian coast and towns near the coast which are also inhabited by Sunnis, Christians, and Ismailis.

In Syria, Al Jazeera has visited a village in Idlib province which was once home to the Alawite community, the sect of President Bashar al-Assad. They fled when opposition forces pushed into their territory, the fighters say the Alawites have been working with the government, and have blood on their hands as well. In Turkey's Hatay province, one can still buy tapestries featuring Syrian President Bashar al-Assad - it could just be a commodity or a sign of unwavering support.
People who live in Antakya and surrounding areas of the province are mainly Alawite - an off-shoot of Shia Islam, the same sect as Assad, and they are worried about the conflict.
They believe the West and their own government are helping extremists to topple a legitimate regime.

In the western mountains of Syria, part of the ancestral homeland of President Bashar al-Assad and his minority Alawite sect, not a day goes by without a funeral. The casualties are the fallen footsoldiers of the president's army. The mourners are the friends, family members and true believers of a regime that they see as the best protector of their country and their minority sect.
Alawites, or "the followers of Ali," are a small, little-known religious community that make up about 12 percent of the Syria's population but control the government of this Sunni-majority country. An offshoot of Shia Islam, Alawites are sometimes treated as heretics by Sunni Muslims.
The BBC's Lyse Doucet reports on the Syrian conflict from the perspective of the Alawite heartland.

President Assad prays the Eid Prayers in the liberated city of Aleppo , the prayer was led by the Sunni Scholar Sheikh Mahmoud Akam who called the Alawite president " a faithful Muslim leader" , the prayer was attended by Some Shia scholars as well . President Bashar al Assad has always been the unifying icon of Islam . Alawite Islam is perennial in nature and essence , this is why Alawites have played a major role in Syria in unifying all Muslims of all branches of Islam as well as bringing Islamic Christian unity and solidarity , since early Islam is understood and preserved by Alawites as a perennial movement of believers also known as “Believers' movement” .

The Alawites, also known as Alawis (ʿAlawīyyah Arabic: علوية), are an Islamic sect, centered in Syria, who follow a branch of the Twelver school of Shia Islam but with syncretistic elements. Alawites revere Ali (Ali ibn Abi Talib), and the name "Alawi" means followers of Ali (they are generally considered Ghulat). The sect is believed to have been founded by Ibn Nusayr during the 9th century. For this reason, Alawites are sometimes called "Nusayris" (Nuṣayrīyyah Arabic: نصيرية), though this term has come to have derogatory connotations in the modern era; another name, "Ansari" (al-Anṣāriyyah), is believed to be a mistransliteration of "Nusayri". Today, Alawites represent 12 percent of the Syrian population and are a significant minority in Turkey and northern Lebanon. There is also a population living in the village of Ghajar in the occupied Golan Heights. They are often confused with the Alevis of Turkey. Alawites form the dominant religious group on the Syrian coast and towns near the coast which are also inhabited by Sunnis, Christians, and Ismailis.
