Famagusta, Varosha - The ghost city
Unlike other parts of the non government controlled areas of Cyprus, the Varosha section of Famagusta was fenced off by the Turkish army immediately after being captured and still remains in that state today. The Greek Cypriots who had fled from Varosha were not allowed to return, and journalists are banned. It has been frozen in time with department stores and hotels empty but still fully equipped. Swedish journalist Jan-Olof Bengtsson, who visited the Swedish UN battalion in Famagusta port and saw the sealed-off part of the town from the battalion's observation post, called the area a 'ghost town'.

ANORTHOSIS FAMAGUSTA ULTRAS
Ultras of Anorthosis are known as MAXHTEC (fighters in greek) and usually get the North terrace of stadium. The idea is that by fighting they'll get to the top and return back to their beloved town of Famagusta. Anorthosis' fans are spread all over the island due to the Turkish invasion. The majority of the fans live in Larnaca, as the temporary stadium is based there. Also there is a massive amount of fans in Limassol and Nicosia. They have fan clubs all over the island and in other countries as well (Greece,UK etc.). MAXHTEC are considered right-wing, although that's not always the case. They display Greek flags but they display Republic of Cyprus flags too. Anorthosis was founded in Famagusta in January 30th 1911. After the Turkish invation of Cyprus in 1974, Anorthosis became a refugee team and is temporarily based in Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca. The Home Stadium in occupied Famagusta is GSE (Gymnastic Club Evagoras) which has been abandoned and in a bad condition since 1974. Anorthosis rivals, are APOEL Nicosia, AC Omonia, AEL Limassol, Apollon Limassol and AEK Larnaca. The main rival of Anorthosis used to be Nea Salamis FC but the rivalry has weathered out since they both are away from their homes in Famagusta. FAMAGUSTA - Αμμόχωστος 1970
I took these few photos late summer 1970, perhaps in October, when we made a trip to famous Famagusta beach - that time. During 1970-71 I served in the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Hope that memories will bring you back to that time - what happened to me while making this videoclip. Enjoy.

Cyprus - Views from Famagusta 1964 - 65.mp4
This movie from 1964 - 65 will show different parts of Famagusta. We start with a visit to the Old City and continue to the Harbour, which is situated close to The Old City. From here we go to the newer part of Famagusta, called Varosha. Finally we pay a visit to the Beach line. Most of the sequences are taken from Hotel Constantia, nowadays called Palm Beach Hotel. Notice that the real tourist-era hadn`t started on the island, much depending on the situation.

ΑΚΟΜΑ ΤΟ ΚΟΡΜΙ ΚΙ ΑΝ ΛΙΩΣΕΙ ΘΑ ΜΠΟΥΜΕ ΣΤΟ ΒΑΡΩΣΙ FREEDOM FOR FAMAGUSTA On August 14, 1974, the island of Cyprus was invaded by Turkey. Called the Cyprus Peace Operation by the Turkish, the invasion army swept across the Messaroia plain and was in Famagusta. Having heard that the Turkish Army was on the way, all members of the Greek Cypriot community was evacuated from the area. There were still Greek Cypriots fleeing for their lives after the Turkish Air Force bombed the city. The Varosha sector of Famagusta was the area that was primarily lived in by the Greek Cypriots. This area was sealed off by the Turkish Army and it is still sealed off today. The people who lived there have not been allowed to return to their homes to gather their possessions. The entire area has been frozen in time with shops filled with clothing and items thirty-four years out of date. Anyone who visits Famagusta and can see into this sealed off section of the city will be looking upon a ghost town.
