'Imran ibn Shahin

'Imran ibn Shahin (died 979) was a Nabataean and the founder of a state in the Batihah marshlands in the 10th century. His reign was marked by decades of struggle against the Buyids of Iraq.

Life

'Imran created the marsh state during the period of the declining authority of the Caliphate. Having committed a crime in Jamidah, 'Imran fled to the neighboring swamps to avoid punishment by the local government. From there he managed to gain the cooperation of fellow criminals and local fisherman, and was able to set up a robber state, defying government authority. He managed to expand his power when the Biridis of Basra charged him with the protection of Jamidah and the parts of Ahvaz lying within the Batihah. With more followers flocking to him, 'Imran was eventually able to take control of the whole swamp.

The Buyids' entrance into Baghdad in 945 meant that conflict between the two sides was inevitable. The Buyid amir Mu'izz al-Daula sent his deputy Abu Ja'far al-Saymari to subdue the Batihah. He managed to inflict a series of defeats upon 'Imran, who fled and whose family was imprisoned. The death of Mu'izz's overlord 'Imad al-Daula in late 949, however, forced Mu'izz to send al-Saymari to Fars in order to secure the succession of 'Imad's son 'Adud al-Daula, giving 'Imran the opportunity to recover his authority.

Labbayk

Labbayk (Bengali: লাব্বায়িক; Arabic: لبيك‎) is an English nasheed vocal group of Bangladeshi descent formed in London, England, in 2004, comprising the singers Masum, Shafi and Imran. Ehsaan Tahmid was a member until he left the group in 2015.

History

In May 2004, Labbayk was formed within the Muslim society of a secondary school in London. Masum (born 1987), Imran (born 1991) and other students showed an interest in the idea and sang at Islamic events for the school. In 2006, Ehsaan Tahmid (born 1987) joined the group until May 2015, when he decided to leave the group. He was replaced by Shafi, who joined the group in December 2015. The group members are all of Bangladeshi descent.

Labbayk is represented by the Gloucester-based record label Safar Media.

Style

Musical instruments are not used in composing the vocal harmonies in Labbayk's nasheeds. The style of the nasheeds is Islamic a cappella, using voices only. Their singing styles originate from Indian, Arab and Western melodies. The aim is to give dawah (inviting others to Islam) through melodies and lyrics.

Q+A

Q+A is a New Zealand current event and political talkshow. It is currently hosted by Simon Dallow who is covering for Susan Wood, while she is recovering from a head injury. Interviews are conducted by Corin Dann. The show airs live from the TVNZ Centre on Sundays from 9 to 10am on TV ONE, and screened later that day from 9:10pm to 10:00pm on TVNZ 7 (prior to the closure of that channel in 2012).

History

Q+A premiered on the 22 March 2009 as a replacement for Agenda. Following the death of Holmes' mother, Mark Sainsbury filled-in for one week.
Greg Boyed took over as presenter after Paul Holmes faced health issues at the end of 2012. Sir Paul Holmes died on February 1 2013.

Format

The programme starts off every week with a "week that was" style run-through of the main political events that week. The presenter will then introduce the panel (usually made up of Arseneau and a political observer and a former politician) Following that Dann will conduct an interview with a politician (either in the studio or on location) and the presenter will lead the panel through a discussion about the responses the interviewee gave. After an ad break the presenter will conduct a more relaxed interview with a former politician or political observer, with the presenter again leading the panel through discussing what will be the big stories in the week ahead finishing the show.

Q&A (Homeland)

"Q&A" is the fifth episode of the second season of the American television drama series Homeland, and the 17th episode overall. It originally aired on Showtime on October 28, 2012.

The original broadcast was watched by 2.07 million viewers which marked an all-time high for the series. Along with Dexter, it was the first time two Showtime programs topped two million viewers in the same night.

The episode was cited by multiple publications as one of the best television episodes of 2012.

Plot

Brody (Damian Lewis) is brought to an unknown location and is alone, handcuffed in a room with cameras watching him. Quinn (Rupert Friend) enters and begins the interrogation while Saul (Mandy Patinkin) and Carrie (Claire Danes) observe from another room. He starts with a line of questioning designed to get Brody to tell a series of lies. Brody denies knowing Abu Nazir's son, and claims he never wore a suicide vest and had no involvement in any plot with Tom Walker. Quinn then shows the video of Brody's confession that they acquired and leaves him alone for a while to think about it. When Quinn returns, Brody readily confesses to knowing and loving Issa, and being angry at Vice President Walden, but denies ever wearing a suicide vest. Brody boasts that nothing happened in that bunker and they have no real evidence on him. When he can't extract any more information, Quinn explodes in anger and stabs Brody in the hand with a knife. Quinn later explains his actions to Saul as a performance, because "every good cop needs a bad cop."

Q&A (U.S. talk show)

Q&A is an American television series on the C-SPAN network. Each Q&A episode is a one-hour formal face-to-face interview with a notable person, hosted by C-SPAN founder Brian Lamb. Typical guests on the show include journalists, politicians, authors, doctors and other public figures. C-SPAN’s criteria for guests is that they have a personal story and can teach the viewer something.

Q&A airs on Sunday nights at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern Time, and the C-SPAN website features videos and transcripts of all past interviews.

Production

Q&A premiered on Sunday, December 12, 2004. It replaced the program Booknotes, which Brian Lamb had hosted for 15 years previously. Whereas Booknotes featured interviews only with published authors, the concept for Q&A as developed by Lamb was to interview noteworthy individuals from diverse backgrounds and learn about their achievements.

The program's interviews are normally recorded in the studio space previously used for Booknotes, however other locations have been used. The first episode of “Q&A” was taped in the Knowledge Is Power Program Academy’s music hall, and an interview with President George W. Bush was recorded in the White House Map Room.
