Mexican Empire
The Second Mexican Empire; that glimmer of imperial glory south of the border that existed between 1864 and 1867. The ruler, Emperor Maximilian, envisioned an Empire of Mexico that would dominate Central America between the northern and southern powers of America and Brazil and which would become a naval power to rule the Gulf of Mexico. This was too much for the USA which wanted no potential rivals in the Americas and so the US ensured the victory of the republican status quo. The US breathed a sigh of relief when Maximilian was shot, the republic restored and Mexico reverted back to the pattern of coups, civil wars, revolutions and petty dictators.

California.
Beginning in the late 18th century, the area known as Alta California was colonized by the Spanish Empire. In 1821, Mexico, including Alta California, became the First Mexican Empire, beginning as a monarchy, before shifting to a republic. In 1846 a group of American settlers in Sonoma declared the independence of a California Republic. As a result of the Mexican-American War, Mexico ceded California to the United States. It became the 31st state admitted to the union on September 9, 1850.

Mexico National Anthem * (Sp/En)
The lyrics of the national anthem, which allude to Mexican victories in the heat of battle and cries of defending the homeland, were composed by poet Francisco González Bocanegra in 1853. In 1854, Jaime Nunó composed the music which now accompanies González's poem. The anthem, consisting of ten stanzas and a chorus, entered into use on September 16, 1854. The flag of Mexico is a vertical Tricolor of green, white, and red with an eagle on it, with the national coat of arms charged in the center of the white stripe. While the meaning of the colors has changed over time, these three colors were adopted by Mexico following independence from Spain during the country's War of Independence, and subsequent First Mexican Empire. The current flag was adopted in 1968, but the overall design has been used since 1821, when the First National Flag was created. The current law of national symbols, Law on the National Arms, Flag, and Anthem, that governs the use of the national flag has been in place since 1984. The central emblem is the Aztec pictogram for Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City), the center of their empire. It recalls the legend that inspired the Aztecs to settle on what was originally a lake-island. The form of the coat of arms was most recently revised in 1968. Aztec legend held that they should found their city on the spot where they saw an eagle on a nopal, eating a snake. Ribbon in the national colors are at the bottom of the coat of arms. Throughout history, the flag has ...

Emperor Maximilian and Empress Charlotte of Mexico
Maximilian I of Mexico (6 July 1832 -- 19 June 1867; born Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph of Austria) was a member of the Imperial House of Habsburg-Lorraine. After a distinguished career in the Austrian Navy, he was proclaimed Emperor of Mexico on 10 April 1864 during the Second Mexican Empire with the backing of Napoleon III of France and a group of Mexican monarchists. Many foreign governments, including that of the United States, refused to recognize his government. This helped to ensure the success of Liberal forces led by Benito Juárez, and Maximilian was executed, after capture by the Liberals, in 1867. In Mexico, he and his consort are known as Maximiliano and Carlota. Charlotte of Belgium (Princess Marie Charlotte Amélie Augustine Victoire Clémentine Léopoldine of Belgium), (7 June 1840 -- 19 January 1927) is remembered today as Carlota of Mexico as empress consort of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, ex-Archduke of Austria.

WAR ORIGINAL BAND-Cinco de Mayo
The Battle of Puebla was a battle fought on May 5, 1862 near the city of Puebla, between the armies of Mexico, under the command of Ignacio Zaragoza, and the Second French Empire, led by Charles Ferdinand Latrille Count Lorencez during the Second French Intervention in Mexico, which resulted in a major victory for the Mexican people that considered inferior forces managed to defeat one of the most experienced and respected armies of the time. Despite its success, the battle did not prevent the invasion of the country, only delayed. The French finally return and expected to advance to the City of Mexico, which established the Second Mexican Empire.

Contra Guerillas
A short look at the Contra-Guerillas of the Mexican Imperial Army. This was the most feared military unit of the 2nd Mexican Empire and was charged with fighting fire with fire, using the same brutal tactics employed by the republican bandits against them. They operated mostly in the east and along the border, an area which long had a reputation for being wild and lawless. They were highly effective and most officers had large prices on their heads by the republicans. This also meant that few, if any, could expect to be taken prisoner if caught. Their enemies called them "the Red Devils" and their commander, Colonel Dupin, was known as the "Hyena of Tamaulipas" after the Mexican state they often operated in.
