Grateful Dead Drummer Makes Music with Patients at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital
www.ucsf.edu He's rocked out in front of as many as 600000 fans at concert venues all over the country. As a Grateful Dead drummer, Mickey Hart and his band mates have headlined more than 2300 concerts while developing a cult following among devotees who proudly call themselves "Deadheads." After being a professional drummer for more than 45 years, Hart has changed his focus to smaller venues, this time performing for an audience of pediatric patients at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, where children and their families find compassionate care at the forefront of scientific discovery. On a sunny afternoon in June, Hart, his daughter Raya Sunshine, and a team of half a dozen hip musicians laid out colorful, psychedelic drums of various shapes and sizes for a carefully orchestrated drum circle. The goal was to use music as part of the healing process for children who are hospitalized with serious illnesses.

Breaking Ground for UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay
UCSF celebrated the groundbreaking for a medical center to serve women, children and cancer patients at Mission Bay in October 2010, signifying a major turning point in the history of UCSF. UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital hosted an official groundbreaking ceremony and luncheon on Oct. 26 and a community celebration on Oct. 27 to thank everyone who has helped with the project so far. When UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay is completed in 2014, the 289-bed hospital complex will set a new standard for patient- and family-centered health care, safety, sustainability and translational medicine. The close proximity of the hospital complex to UCSF's biomedical research campus at Mission Bay will speed the application of laboratory discoveries to the treatment of patients in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
