LITTLE THINGS big problems-- Aquatic Invaders
Zebra mussel, quagga mussel, round goby and other invasive species are causing havoc on Lake Michigan. This is causing the food web to become out of balance, and may be causing birds to die. National Park biologist and USGS scientist are trying to figure out what is causing this. Can this mystery be solved before the endangered great lakes piping plover becomes extinct? People can help, clean drain and dry all boating and fishing gear to stop aquatic hitch hikers.

Invasive Zebra Mussel Ingesting Zequanox
Invasive Zebra Mussel Ingesting Zequanox
This video demonstrates how invasive mussels perceive Zequanox (by Marrone Bio Innovations) as a nonthreatening food source and readily consume the biological control product. Derived from a naturally occurring microbe (Pseudomonas fluorescens), Zequanox is highly selective and has been proven to be lethal to zebra and quagga mussels, without harming humans, infrastructure, non-target species, or the environment. Zequanox is composed of dead cells that destroy the mussel's digestive system within days on consumption. Zequanox is proven effective in a broad range of water conditions and temperatures, and it can be used to control mussels at all stages of maturity—from veliger to adult. Zebra mussels, netting stigma challenge Mille Lacs Band - Brainerd Dispatch MN
MILLE LACS — It flowed from the box of the pickup truck, through Brad Kalk's hands and into a tub at his feet. Careful not to let the gill net touch the ground, Kalk pried his last walleye from the mesh, then picked at the bits of stringy weeds that also had gathered. Kalk, commissioner of natural resources for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe and a regular netter this young season, didn't have much to show for his efforts Wednesday morning at the Powwow Grounds access just off Highway 169 on Lake Mille Lacs — seven walleyes weighing exactly 10.20 pounds. Zebra Mussels in Lake Michigan, an aquatic invasive species
Zebra Mussels in Lake Michigan, an aquatic invasive species
The problem of zebra mussels in the Great Lakes stems from the fact that they are fast growing and cover everything. They were brought into the Great Lakes via ballast water from ocean going ships, and once they got here they quickly got a strong hold. The zebra mussels will cover everything and as you can tell from the video they are taking over the beaches as well. At some place along the lake you will have beaches that are no longer covered in sand, but rather zebra mussels. The zebra mussels are filter feeders, sifting the water through their gills. Because of their feeding methods and sheer numbers, they typically change the water clarity quite drastically.
