Shabran District

Shabran (Azerbaijani: Şabran) is a rayon of Azerbaijan. Şabran city is its administrative center.

Geography

Greater part of the rayon is mountainous. The Caspian Sea is located in 12 km from Shabran city. The rayon borders upon Quba, Khachmaz, Shamakhi and Siazan Rayons. Forests occupy 27000 ha in mountainous territories and plains near the Caspian Sea and they are of great importance with its climatic and natural resources for the rayon. The Shabran and Davachi Rivers flow through the rayon’s territory, and the Valvalachay and Gilgilchay Rivers flow in northern and southern borders directly to the Caspian Sea. Samur-Davachi lowland has an altitude of -28 m below the world ocean level.

Shabran Rayon is located in the north-east of Greater Caucasus. The rayon is located near Greater Caucasus Range. There are also mud volcanoes in the territory of the rayon. Breeds of the Cretaceous, Paleogene and Neogene periods spread in mountainous parts, but breeds of Anthropogenic period spread in low-lying parts. The territory is rich of oil, gas, gravel, sand, clay and other natural resources. Medicinal mineral waters, “Galaalty” sanatorium, high-temperature Khaltan springs are broadly used by the population.

Şabran (also known as Shabran, Dəvəçi, Dävächi, Divichi, Däväçi, Devechi, Divachi, and Divichibazar) is a city in and the capital of the Şabran Rayon of Azerbaijan.

History

Known as Davachi until 2010, Şabran received its city status in 1961. The name Şabran remembers an historic, medieval town of the same name that was a port some 15km further north.

Demographics

The officially registered population of Şabran in 2010 was 23,248. Azerbaijanis and Tats are the largest ethnic groups.

Shabaran

Shabran (Shabaran, Shavaran, Sabaran) (Azerbaijani: Şabran) – was a historical oblast and a city which existed from the 5th to the 18th centuries. It was in what is now the eastern part of the Azerbaijani Republic, within the borders of Greater Caucasus pass.

Shabran oblast was a part of Maksut oblast in historical geography.

Etymology

There are several versions about origin of Shabran city and oblast. According to one of them, the city allegedly was founded by Shapur I, the Shah of the Sassanids, and the name of the city is originated from Shapuran, Pahlavi form of his name. The given version is not considered verisimilar, as if origination of the city is dated back to 5th-7th centuries AD, but Shapur I lived three centuries earlier. Another version connects the name of the city with Savar/Sabar tribe. There is not an accurate version about the name’s origin, yet.

History

Shabran appeared in the 5th-7th centuries as a fortress-city, but by the 9th-10th centuries became the great political-administrative, trade-handicraft and cultural center of the Shirvanshahs Government. In the mid 11th century, the family burial vault of the Shirvanshahs was in Shabran. Subsequently, the name of the city was given to surrounding area.
