Playful Pinnipeds: California Sea Lions
The California sea lion is the trained "seal" seen in circuses and zoos. These highly social marine mammals exhibit complex behavior and can be a lot of fun to observe either while diving or topside when they are hauled out on nearby rocks.

PBR Wi-Fi Battle 19: Pinniped Rivalry! Dewgong vs. Walrein!
Man, I was hoping my opponent wouldn't send out Typhlosion first... and she did! I was scared of Eruption, which was the first move it used... Fortunately, Girafarig took it like a beast, and it barely did anything to Dewgong thanks to its ability, Thick Fat (for once I'm glad I don't have a Hydration Dewgong). Walrein decided to set up on the second turn, allowing Dewgong to shut it down with encore. My opponent was obviously frightened by the effects TR could have on her Typhlosion, so she switched out to Azumarill. I thought it would Aqua Jet Girafarig, so I encored it, but it went after Dewgong, allowing me to cripple it with Skill Swap. She then switched back out to Typhlosion, possibly thinking I wouldn't attack, while I crippled Walrein by giving it Azumarill's ability, which it couldn't really put to good use. I double teamed Typhlosion the next turn, but Dewgong's crit took it out before Girafarig could attack. I didn't really do much for the rest of the battle since Crobat decided it would be just swell to break sleep clause and put my two pokemon to sleep after Girafarig died. Anyway, what I learned from this battle was not to go on doubles unless you expect to win with only two of your pokemon doing the work, because chances are, half of your team is going to be asleep for most of the battle. But my opponent's team was pretty cool; too bad it has a huge weakness to electric attacks. It's a good thing my pokemon were bulky enough to tough out the sleep.

Pinniped Feeding and Training Presentation
I am giving a trainer's presentation before we head into the exhibit to feed and train the Californina Sea Lions and Pacific and Atlantic Harbor Seals. Usually, this speech is given from within the exhibit using a head mic while working an animal. Unfortunately, our head mic was out of commission for a long while.

From a Sea Lion's POV
Milo the sea lion really seems to enjoy playing with sea lion-cam at the Aquarium of the Pacific. With the enthusiasm that he shows when carrying the camera rig he reminds me of a golden retriever with a favorite tennis ball. Check out Milo's latest video creation "From a Sea Lion's Point of View" where you'll see the pinniped exhibit and underwater visitors tunnel from a sea lion's perspective. www.aquariumofpacific.org

Paleo-Breakthrough (Seal Evolution) from an Arctic Fossil
A "missing link" fossil of a new mammal species from Canada's High Arctic rewrites the evolutionary story of seals. This prehistoric carnivore represents a new branch on a family tree, between an ancestor that walked on land and today's sea-going seals and their relatives. It provides insight into what pinnipeds (true seals, sea lions and the walrus) looked like before they were adapted to hunting in the ocean. It also suggests a different centre of pinniped evolution from that of the prevailing theory. The fossil is 24 to 20 million years old and was found in the Haughton Crater on Devon Island. The research team is led by Dr. Natalia Rybczynski of the Canadian Museum of Nature. Stellar Sea Lion Training/Husbandry Session at Mystic Aquarium
Stellar Sea Lions Eden and Mara were taking part in a daily husbandry/training session that was all based on positive reinforcement. In this video, you will hear the narrator bring up on how the Mystic Aquarium cares for it's six stellar sea lions and harbor seal as well as how the facility trains their marine mammals. Mara is is the one doing the training session, while Eden, who is temporarily in the video was doing a husbandry session with her trainer before she went back stage for a vet examination. ABOUT ANIMAL HUSBANDRY: Animal husbandry incorporates all methods and practices used to monitor the health of a captive animal. Trainers, veterinarians, and animal care staffers have structured a routine that would allow them to maintain animal health at zoological parks through behavior observation, and medical examination. All work that is done with the animals is then recorded on computers for easy references in the near future. All sorts of husbandry exists such and they include blood tests, specimen samples, dental and body examination, and ultrasound. All husbandry sessions are voluntary for the animal's part and are trained with the same tools just like they are with other behaviors. Through observing and caring for animal health, care takers are able to to maintain detailed husbandry records. Such records might be viable for a zoological community when it comes to caring for marine mammals such as cetaceans and pinnipeds .

I Walk Alone - Green Day
This was a student project (Education - Fair Use) to create a music video for an existing song. Three lonely souls think they are the only ones out there that feel the way they do, and pass without knowing each other. They all have hopes and dreams that they do not fulfill. I worked on concept, camera, and editing. We use several special effects to convey emotion. All filming in San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria, including the Allan Hancock College campus.

Baby's Firsts
Please note: while the mother and pup are bonding, they may be out of public view. We appreciate your understanding. A female harbor seal pup was born at the Aquarium Thursday, April 26. The pup is currently in the Seals and Sea Lions Habitat with her parents. The pup was born to two of the Aquarium's harbor seals, Shelby and Troy. Shelby came to the Aquarium in 1998. Troy, the Aquarium's only male harbor seal, came to the Aquarium in 2007. Enjoy a few snippets of some of her first moments! www.aquariumofpacific.org
