Chukchi Sea Drilling Operations
"Shell readies the drill bit for first spud!" This weekend crews aboard the Noble Discoverer began drilling at Shell's "Burger" prospect in the Chukchi Sea, Alaska. This marks the culmination of more than six-years of effort by Shell to begin exploring Alaska's Outer Continental Shelf. This is the first time a drill bit has touched the sea floor in the US Chukchi Sea in more than two decades. For more information about our operations please check us out! Top Holes - Learn more about drilling the top portion of a Chukchi Sea exploration
Wells, like houses, begin with a foundation. In the Arctic, the foundational well -- also called a top hole - starts with a 20-by-40 foot area excavated into the seafloor called the mud-line cellar. This hole is an insurance measure to protect the blowout preventer (BOP) from the risk of damage by any large, unseasonal ice floes. During the majority of the season, the wells Shell plans to drill are in ice-free waters. However, right at the end of the season, ice will begin to re-form near the prospects and the mud-line cellar provides an extra level of protection against any ice floes that could reach to the sea floor. The Esperanza's Save the Arctic tour in Alaska
The Greenpeace ship Esperanza traveled to the Arctic to show what's at stake as melting sea ice opens the region to offshore drilling and unsustainable fishing. Scientists explored the little known waters and sea floor of the Bering and Chukchi Seas with small research submarines, and made discoveries that will help protect this pristine environment. We met with the people who have called this region home for generations, and joined a growing global movement to save the Arctic. www.savethearctic.org

Discovering Abundant Corals at Shell's Arctic Drill Site
During the first research submarine dive in the Chukchi Sea, Greenpeace marine biologist John Hocevar discovered abundant Gersemia rubiformis corals, also known as sea raspberry, where Shell hopes to begin Arctic offshore drilling this summer. The discovery raises questions why the Arctic corals are not adequately addressed in the environmental impact statement for Shell's drilling program. Discovering abundant corals in the Arctic waters right where Shell plans to drill this summer shows just how little is known about this fragile and unique region. Learn more at savethearctic.org

Point Hope, Alaska and Shell's offshore drilling plans
The mayor and other residents of Point Hope, Alaska share their concerns about Shell's offshore drilling plans in the Arctic. Residents of this town, also known as "Tikigaq," have survived for generations off the bounty of the Chukchi Sea, which is now threatened by pollution, noise, and the risk of an oil spill that would come with offshore drilling.

(HD 1080p) Alaskan Reflections, "Yellow" by Coldplay
Alaska, bordered by the Yukon Territory and British Columbia in Canada, to the east, the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the south, the Bering Sea, Bering Strait, and Chukchi Sea to the west and the Arctic Ocean to the north. Alaska's territorial waters touch Russia's territorial waters in the Bering Strait, is the largest state of the United States with land area at 586412 square miles, larger than all but 18 sovereign countries in the world. After 12 hours of flying, my wife and I flew into Fairbanks on the first day of our Alaskan vacation. It was almost midnight but the sun was still up. Fairbanks, only a few degrees south of the arctic circle, is the gateway to the wild Alaskan interiors, land of the midnight sun and the northern lights (aurora borealis). For the next three weeks, we traveled by train across the vast expanse of the Denali National Park and Preserve, six million acres of wild land where wild animals, large and small, roam unfenced lands, living as they have for ages (caribous, mooses, dall sheeps and brown bears). Visitors see the relatively low-elevation taiga forests give way to high alpine tundra and snowy mountains and raging rivers, culminating in North America's tallest peak 20320' Mount McKinley! "Yellow" is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay. The band wrote the song and co-produced it with British record producer Ken Nelson for their debut album, Parachutes (2000). The song's lyrics are a reference to band vocalist Chris ...

US scientists make startling Arctic discovery
A team of US scientists have made a startling discovery in the Arctic Ocean. The scientists were traveling through the Chukchi Sea when they found phytoplankton flourishing under the ice. Being compared by the scientists to finding "a rainforest in the middle of the desert", the 100km long "megabloom" was previously thought to be impossible because an ice-pack can be several metres thick. Al Jazeera's Gerald Tan reports.

Polar Bear Dance - A World Record
www.sierraclub.org Last weekend people came out in costume to successfully set a new world record for most dancing polar bears asking for Arctic protection. The new world record has been recognized by RecordSetter.com. At more than 40 locations across the country, people dressed in white with polar bear masks and danced to raise awareness about the current threats to America's Arctic. Shell Oil is currently moving forward with plans to start drilling as soon as this summer in the Arctic's Beaufort and Chukchi Seas—otherwise known as the Polar Bear Seas because they are home to the entire population of US polar bears.

MITgcm on Ice
Temperature in the Arctic region has been rising at approximately twice the global average rate in the past 100 years (Solomon et al., Technical Summary, IPCC 2007). To understand the effect of warming on the Arctic sea ice and ocean circulation, An Nguyen and colleagues simulated a data-constrained coupled ocean and sea ice state estimate at high horizontal resolution. One area of great interest is the Chukchi Sea where the source of an important water mass, the Western Arctic upper halocline, is formed. The upper halocline, a layer of high vertical salinity gradient and near-freezing temperature, resides at depths 50-200m and insulates the surface sea ice from the heat stored in the Atlantic Water at depths below 300m. Thus an understanding of its origin, ventilation, and variability can improve our understanding in the Arctic Ocean circulation and in the halocline's contribution to sea ice changes. In this video interview, polar researcher An Nguyen presents the results of a recently published ocean and sea-ice modeling study of the Chukchi Sea she co-authored with researchers at JPL. You can find out more about An Nguyen, this project, and the MIT General Circulation Model, or MITgcm, at mitgcm.org Video by Helen Hill

Vigil for the Arctic-Seattle-June 9-10-2012.wmv
Vigil held at the Seattle Waterfront to mourn the imminent departure of Shell's two Arctic oil rigs currently in Seattle, the Kulluk (headed for the Beaufort Sea) and the Noble Discoverer (headed for the Chukchi Sea). The Beaufort and Chukchi seas have been called the "nursery of the planet" for whales, seabirds, polar bears, and many other species. And the fact that Shell has been given permission by the government to be the first to begin drilling for oil in these pristine and fragile seas in the Arctic is a catastrophe waiting to happen, as there is no proven method for cleaning oil spilled on ice. And no matter how much Shell reassures us that a spill will not happen, that they have all the safeguards in place, we all know what the reality is. And all this risk of irreparable environmental destruction for what amounts to about 3 year's worth of oil supply for our country.
