''Hello'' (stylized as ''HELLO!'') is a weekly magazine specializing in celebrity news and human-interest stories, published in the United Kingdom since 1988. ''Hello'' is sister magazine to ¡Hola!, the Spanish weekly magazine launched in Spain in 1944. ¡HOLA! Spanish, Hello UK, and ¡HOLA! Mexican – launched in 2006 – make up the magazines published by HOLA, S.A and distributed in over 100 countries. Local editions of the magazine are also published in Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Greece, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Middle East, Morocco, Pakistan, Russia, Serbia, Thailand, and Turkey.

History

''Hello'' was launched in 1988 by publisher Eduardo Sánchez Junco, owner and chairman of Spain’s groundbreaking ''¡HOLA!'' magazine. ''¡HOLA!'' was created in 1944 by husband and wife Antonio Sánchez Gómez and Mercedes Junco Calderón. They wanted to create a light-hearted magazine that focused on weddings, new babies, new loves, and other people-centered, personal stories. Antonio Sánchez Gómez felt that "things of human interest would have pride of place in the magazine, and people more than things." From the beginning, ''¡HOLA!'' regularly sold out and built a reputation for elegance and good taste.

The success of both magazines led to the expansion of the brand across the world, after exports to over 70 countries bolstered the company’s international presence. Today, editions of the magazine are produced in Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Greece, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, the Middle East, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Russia, Serbia, Thailand, and Turkey. In total there are 18 editions of the magazine and nine websites.

Editorial concept

''Hello''’s editorial concept distinguishes it from the many sensationalist and negative celebrity magazines on the market in the UK. Hello’s content includes respectful coverage of celebrities and royals and compelling human-interest stories. It aims to provide the quality of content that a monthly magazine provides in a news-focused, weekly format.

The magazine’s respectful treatment of celebrities allows it to maintain a friendly relationship with many stars. Through these relationships the magazine often obtains exclusive photos and interviews directly from the stars. Many of the biggest exclusives in recent memory have been published by Hello, including the births of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s children Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ wedding, and Sandra Bullock’s debut of her son. Coverage of royalty comprises a significant portion of the magazine’s content.

Hellomagazine.com is the official website of the weekly celebrity news magazine Hello. Started in 2001 to complement the magazine, the website contains separate content to the weekly magazine, reporting celebrity news on a daily rather than weekly basis. The site is updated throughout the day, seven days a week.

The site provides users with photos, news stories and video content in the following categories: Celebrities, Fashion, Royalty, Beauty, Brides, Cuisine, Travel and Your Weddings.

At the end of each year, hellomagazine.com hosts three polls that draw international attention: Most Attractive Man, Most Attractive Woman, and Most Elegant Woman. In January 2010, Hugh Laurie was named Most Attractive Man, while Kristen Stewart won Most Attractive Woman, and Angelina Jolie was voted Most Elegant Woman. Altogether, the polls totaled close to 750,000 votes.

Litigation

2003 – Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas sued ''Hello'' for publishing unauthorised photographs of their wedding. Rival magazine ''OK!'' had an exclusive contract for pictures of the wedding, and also sued ''Hello'' In November 2003, ''OK!'' was awarded £1,033,156 in damages, and Jones and Douglas received £14,600.

2006 – ''Hello'', which secured the British rights to the first images of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's newborn daughter, launched legal action with ''People'' against two websites that printed a leaked exclusive shot of the couple with their new baby daughter. The leaked photo, which contains ''Hello'' magazine's logo, shows a headline which reads: "The biggest exclusive of the year. Angelina and Brad with their new Baby Shiloh Nouvel." ''People'' magazine reportedly paying more than $4 million USD to secure the American rights.

Ranbir Kapoor (born 28 September 1982) is an Indian actor who appears in Bollywood movies.

Making his acting debut in the 2007 film ''Saawariya'', for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, Kapoor earned positive notice for his performance in ''Wake Up Sid'' (2009). He later appeared in the romantic comedy ''Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani'' (2009) and the political thriller ''Raajneeti'' (2010), with the later being his biggest commercial success to date. In 2011, Kapoor starred and earned wide critical acclaim for his performance in ''Rockstar'' for which he received the Best Actor and Best Actor (Critics) awards at the Filmfare ceremony.

Early life

Kapoor, the son of actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, was born into a family of Punjabi origin; his sister is Riddhima Kapoor Sahni. He is the grandson of actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor, great grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor, nephew of actors Randhir Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor, grand-nephew of actors Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, and first-cousin of actresses Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. Kapoor studied at Bombay Scottish School in Mahim, Mumbai and went on to pursue method acting at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York.

Career

Before starting off his career as an actor, Kapoor appeared in two short films: ''Passion to Love'' (2002), which was also directed by him, and ''India 1964'' (2004). He later began working as an assistant with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, where he was involved in the making of the film ''Black'' (2005). Kapoor who initially had plans of becoming an actor was later cast by Bhansali in his next directional venture, ''Saawariya'' opposite newcomer Sonam Kapoor. The film failed to do well at the box office, though his performance was largely appreciated. Kapoor was then seen in Siddharth Anand's romantic comedy ''Bachna Ae Haseeno'' (2008) alongside Bipasha Basu, Minissha Lamba and Deepika Padukone. The film was a semi-hit at the box-office.

2009 saw Kapoor appear in three movies. His first release was Ayan Mukerji's ''Wake Up Sid'', in which he portrayed the character of Siddharth Mehra, a spoiled and self-centered college student from Mumbai. Featured opposite Konkona Sen Sharma, the film was a critical and commercial success. Shrey Patnaik wrote, "Ranbir's Sid is a near-perfect portrait of the aimless young man searching for a direction in life. Ranbir handles the character's inner life with the effortlessness of a Sitar maestro twiddling with his instrument's strings to create a music that takes the audience to a world where the sounds suggest a harmony between art and life. In Wake Up Sid, Ranbir proves once and for all that he's the future of Hindi cinema." Kapoor earned several nominations for Best Actor. He next starred alongside Katrina Kaif in ''Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani'', which surfaced as one of the biggest hits of the year.

Following this, Kapoor appeared in Shimit Amin's drama ''Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year''. Upon release, the film received positive reviews by critics but failed to do well. Kapoor's performance was critically acclaimed, with one critic writing, "Ranbir brings to his part a whole lot of earnestness and heart. His natural and utterly contagious exuberance so much on display in his last two films ''Wake Up Sid'' and ''Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani'' is effortlessly curbed here."

In 2010, he featured in Prakash Jha's multi-starrer political thriller ''Rajneeti''. The film opened to positive reviews and was declared a "blockbuster". His performance was well received with critic Nikhat Kazmi concluding, "The film finally belongs to Ranbir Kapoor who perfects the art of minimalism -- and literally grows before your eyes -- as the simmering volcano that cannot be held back, once it erupts. He's as grey and soot-filled, as volcanoes go." In the same year, Kapoor appeared alongside Priyanka Chopra in Siddharth Anand's ''Anjaana Anjaani'' which was a moderate box office success.

2011 saw Kapoor feature opposite newcomer Nargis Fakhri in Imtiaz Ali's ''Rockstar''. The film, upon release, met with positive to mixed reviews and grossed over Rs.1 billion worldwide In a review published by CNN-IBN, Rajeev Masand wrote: "''Rockstar'' belongs to Ranbir Kapoor over everyone else. It is a riveting performance [...] and Ranbir roots it in the real. Watch how he seizes the stage in the "Sadda Haq" number and virtually makes the track his own. For Ranbir alone, this film deserves a watch." The film earned Kapoor a Best Actor and Best Actor (Critics) award at the 2012 Filmfare awards ceremony.

As of April 2012, Kapoor is scheduled to appear in Anurag Basu's ''Barfee'' alongside Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz and Ayan Mukherjee's ''Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani'' alongside ex-girlfriend Deepika Padukone.

In the media

Kapoor currently lives with his parents in Pali Hill in Mumbai, Maharashtra. During an interview in March 2008, he announced that he was dating Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone; the couple later broke up in 2009. In 2008, Kapoor co-hosted the 54th Filmfare Awards alongside Imran Khan; he was later chosen to co-host the 56th and 57th edition of the award ceremony alongside Imran Khan and Shah Rukh Khan respectively. During November 2010, he made an appearance on the talk show ''Koffee with Karan'' alongside Imran Khan.

Shilpa Shetty (born 8 June 1975) is an Indian film actress and model. Since making her debut in the film ''Baazigar'' (1993), she has appeared in nearly 40 Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films, her first leading role being in the 1994 film ''Aag''. Although she has been through years of decline during her career, Shetty has been willing to reinvent herself quite often. Her performances in ''Dhadkan'' (2000) and ''Rishtey'' (2002) were appreciated, while her portrayal of an AIDS patient in ''Phir Milenge'' (2004) won her many accolades. Her younger sister Shamita Shetty is also a Bollywood film actress.

After taking part in the British ''Celebrity Big Brother'' TV show in 2007, Shetty was crowned the winner with 63% of the final vote, after an international racism controversy involving her and fellow contestants Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd. This was followed by a re-establishment of her status in the film industry in 2007 when she appeared in two successive movies, ''Life in a... Metro'' and ''Apne'', with her performance in the former drawing positive reviews.

Biography

Shilpa Shetty was born in a traditional close-knit family in Mangalore that hails from the Bunt community.

She is the eldest daughter of Surendra and Sunanda Shetty, manufacturers of tamper-proof caps for the pharmaceutical industry,

In Mumbai, she attended St. Anthony Girls' High School in Chembur, and later attended Podar College in Matunga. A trained Bharatanatyam dancer, she is also into sports, was the captain of the volleyball team in schools. She has a black belt in karate and is currently a dancesport expert and enthusiast.

Shetty's younger sister Shamita Shetty is also a Bollywood actress. They worked together once in the film ''Fareb'' (2005).

At 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) barefoot, Shilpa Shetty is among the tallest actresses in Bollywood. It was revealed on 29 March 2009 that Shilpa had purchased a house on St. George's Hill in Weybridge, Surrey, England with her husband Raj Kundra.

Acting career

1990s

Shetty started her career by modelling for Limca in 1991 at age 16 and made her film debut in 1993 with ''Baazigar'', portraying a woman murdered by her psychopathic boyfriend. Shetty took the supporting role of Seema, co-starring alongside Shahrukh Khan and Kajol; the film was a major success and earned her a nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

Her first leading role was in the film ''Aag'' in 1994, which was averagely received at the box office. She had a hit that same year with the film ''Main Khiladi Tu Anari'' opposite Akshay Kumar. This was followed by many films which were average to poor performers at the box office. Shetty starred in another big film that year, ''Aao Pyaar Karen'', followed in 1995 by ''Hathkadi'', where she was working alongside actors such as Saif Ali Khan, Govinda and Madhoo, but they failed at the box office. 1997 was one of her busiest years: she appeared in six different films, beginning with the Telugu language film ''Veedeva Dani Babu''. Her first major Bollywood film of that year was the action thriller ''Auzaar''. Shilpa portrayed the character of Prathna Thakur alongside actors Salman Khan and Sanjay Kapoor. In 1998, she had one release, ''Pardesi Babu'', for which she received critical acclaim and won the Bollywood Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress.

2000s

In 2000, Shetty received much acclaim for her role in ''Dhadkan'' which earned reasonable takings at the Indian box office. She received several nominations under the Best Actress category in award ceremonies. She would later go on to star with Anil Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor in the film ''Rishtey'' (2002). Her comic performance as an eccentric fisherwoman was appreciated and she received a nomination under the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award category and nominations for Best Comedian as well.

2004 was a good year for Shetty with the release of ''Garv'' in which she portrayed a Muslim orphan and disillusioned table dancer starring opposite Salman Khan. According to Shetty, she chose to do the film because she liked the subject. The film was a cop drama. She received much acclaim for her performance in ''Phir Milenge'', where she made a sensitive portrayal of a successful city high-flyer who contracts HIV from unprotected sex and becomes a social outcast as a result. The film, based on 1993's ''Philadelphia'', was perceived to have tackled a social taboo as yet unaddressed by Bollywood. The film earned Shetty a Filmfare Best Actress nomination, and provided an impetus for her HIV-related charity work (see below). Film critic Taran Adarsh from ''indiaFM'' noted, "Phir Milenge belongs to Shilpa Shetty completely. She delivers, what can be rightly called, the performance of her career. The viewer feels and empathises with the character mainly because of her effective portrayal. She conveys the pain and the emotional upheaval through her expressive eyes, making it amongst the most memorable performances the year has seen so far." Shetty stated that she had taken the role to reinvent herself by portraying the rather unconventional character of an anti-terrorist squad member.

She starred with her sister in the film ''Fareb'' in 2005. Shilpa had one release in 2006, the much delayed ''Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar''. The film was a box office flop, but she got good reviews for her role as a not entirely likeable wife. In 2006, she was a judge on ''Jhalak Dikhlaja'', a Sony Entertainment Television dance show based on the original UK show ''Strictly Come Dancing''.

Shetty was once featured in Mani Ratnam's stage show, ''Netru, Indru, Naalai''.

2007 proved to be Shetty's most successful year at the box office so far. Her first release, ''Life in a... Metro'', won a significant reception and became the first Bollywood movie to premiere at Leicester Square. The film performed well at the box office and was declared a semi-hit within three weeks. Additionally, the film was critically acclaimed and Shetty's performance was appreciated, with Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN writing, "It's a terrific performance and unquestionably Shilpa's best to date." Her second release, alongside three Deols (Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby), the drama ''Apne'', was also a box office success.

Other projects

Celebrity Big Brother

Shetty was a contestant in and the winner of ''Celebrity Big Brother UK''. and was the first Indian celebrity included in the Celebrity version. Reportedly paid Rs.31.5 m (£367,500 GBP) for her participation, she said to presenter Davina McCall, "I just want every Indian to be extremely proud that I'm in here". As for her participation, she stated: "I have zero expectations. The only thing I really hope to keep is my self-respect and my dignity." Her sister Shamita told the ''Times of India'' that this "is the boldest decision Shilpa has taken hitherto."

During her time, Shetty instructed fellow housemates Carole Malone and Ken Russell in meditation, and flirted with Dirk Benedict but tempers started to fray by Day 7 as a clique formed in the house disapproving of Shilpa's presence. Following a worldwide controversy that publicised her as a target of racist bullying within the house (see below), Shetty won the contest after gaining 63% of the public vote and described the experience as "incredible and overwhelming". She further thanked the public for "a fantastic opportunity to make my country proud".

Post Celebrity Big Brother

In February 2007, Shetty attended a reception at the House of Commons by invitation of Keith Vaz MP to meet with then Prime Minister Tony Blair. She was also invited to meet with Queen Elizabeth II at Marlborough House in London in March 2007. During an interview on ''This Morning'', Shetty confirmed that she had been asked to act in the British ''EastEnders'' soap opera, and turned it down as it would mean all her other arrangements would have to go on hold.

She was the subject of a Sky One documentary entitled ''The Real Shilpa Shetty'', which was produced by British television production company Twofour. The large number of commercial offers that Shilpa received after winning Celebrity Big Brother themselves became reason for controversy with an increasing number of accusations about her riding the 'racism' wave to commercial gain. She was on the cover of the first issue of OK! Magazine to be sold in India.

In early September 2007 she modelled at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, which also displayed some famous Bollywood actresses including Lara Dutta and Celina Jaitley. As of October 2007, Shilpa will be seen in a musical titled ''Miss Bollywood''. On her agenda next is a cookery book titled ''Soul Curry'' and the role of Sita in Uru Patel's international venture ''Hanuman''.

Bigg Boss

In August 2008, Shetty began hosting the second season of ''Bigg Boss'', the Indian version of ''Big Brother''. Controversially, Jade Goody was one of the initial housemates. Goody left the Bigg Boss House early in the series after receiving news that she had cervical cancer, of which she later died on 22 March 2009.

Indian Premier League

In February 2009 Shilpa and her husband Raj Kundra became part owners of the Indian Premier League franchise cricket team Rajasthan Royals by paying approximately US $15.4 million for a 11.7% stake.

HIV-AIDS

In February 2006 Shetty lent support to a BBC World Service Trust television show designed to tackle the problem of HIV-AIDS in India. The project, which also involved other celebrities Vivek Oberoi, Dia Mirza, and Raveena Tandon in separate episodes, featured Shetty as she shadowed a young achiever whose work involved raising awareness about the condition. According to reports, she participated in order to show solidarity with HIV-AIDS sufferers.

The issue is particularly close to Shetty's heart as she had portrayed an HIV-positive sufferer in her 2004 movie ''Phir Milenge''. Speaking about the movie and HIV in general, Shetty said: "Why not a film on HIV positive patients? It is a social stigma in our society. We made this film to highlight this problem ... This film will bring about a social awareness about AIDS in our country. It is high time we talked about this in our society".

PETA

In March 2006 various sources reported Shetty's joining PETA as part of an advertising campaign against the use of wild animals in circuses. According to a PETA India press release, Shetty is a long-time PETA supporter and has assisted the campaign by posing for photographs in a figure-hugging tiger costume. She explained that her crouching in a cage was uncomfortable during the photoshoot, but that her discomfort was insignificant compared to the pain suffered by the creatures. "These once dignified animals only leave their cages, which are barely larger than the size of their bodies, for a few minutes each day to be forced into the ring to perform tricks which make no sense and are upsetting to them. The best way to help animals suffering in circuses is to boycott the circus".

Shetty revealed in a later interview that she felt strongly about this cause and that she was appalled to hear of the cruel treatment suffered by such animals. "I thought I should stop that. If I can make a little difference to their lives, why not go for it?"

Personal life

Shetty married Raj Kundra on 22 November 2009 and announced on her web site that "I am officially Shilpa Shetty Kundra now!!".

Controversies

Obscenity charges

In April 2006, a Madurai court issued non-bailable warrants against Shetty and Reema Sen for "posing in an obscene manner" in photographs published by a Tamil newspaper. The report stated that the two actresses had failed to comply with earlier summons for the same reason, hence the issuance of the warrants. The petitioner submitted that the paper had published "very sexy blow-ups and medium blow-ups" in its December 2005 and January 2006 issues, and alleged that these violated the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act 1986, Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act 1956, and the Indian Penal Code Section 292 (Sale of Obscene Books). The petitioner further demanded that the images be confiscated under the terms of the Press and Registration of Book Act 1867.

Shetty responded that she had not received any court summons and also discounted the charges. She further claimed that the pictures were freeze-frame shots from a recent movie that only exposed her navel. "As far as my photographs go, what is obscene about it? If navel-showing is obscenity, then our traditional Indian outfit – the traditional sari – should be banned in the first place."

In January 2007 outgoing Chief Justice Y.K. Sabharwal confirmed that Shetty had written to him requesting that he enunciate guidelines against frivolous lawsuits against artists, but that he had refused her plea on the grounds that she should have filed a formal petition instead of writing a letter.

Celebrity Big Brother racism controversy

During her time on ''Celebrity Big Brother'', Shetty was the target of racism and bullying by other housemates, chiefly by Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd. After mocking the east London dialect of Jade Goody's mother, who mispronounced her name as 'Shiwpa', Shetty was mocked for her Indian accent and was branded "The Indian" and a "dog". Disparaging conversations took place among the other housemates about Indian eating habits, and Shetty's cooking was criticised for giving O'Meara diarrhoea. After Shetty attempted to dispose of left-over chicken soup down the toilet and caused a blockage, Jack Tweed suggested that she should pick the bones out with her teeth and allegedly referred to her as a "fucking Paki", although show producers denied this and stated that the word used was "cunt". During a fierce argument, Goody told Shetty that she needed to "spend a day in the slums", although the media falsely reported this as "go back to the slums". Claiming that she did not know Shilpa's surname, Jade referred to her as "Shilpa Fuckawallah", "Shilpa Durupa", and "Shilpa Poppadom", later claiming that they were non-racist references to Indian food. Lloyd had opined that Shetty's English-speaking skills were lacking and verbally indicated her desire that Shetty would "fuck off home". Shetty had been reduced to tears on several occasions, confiding to fellow housemate Ian Watkins: "I feel like I'm losing my dignity."

Shetty speculated that she might be a victim of racism, but later retracted it by claiming: "People say things in anger." A record 40,000 complaints were received jointly by OFCOM and Channel 4 about the treatment of Shetty, 30 of which were formally investigated by Hertfordshire police. Carphone Warehouse suspended its sponsorship of the show and Louise Burfitt-Dons, the founder of the Act Against Bullying charity, branded Jade Goody's behaviour as "unforgivable". The controversy reached the British Parliament as an early day motion in the House of Commons was tabled. The row then escalated into an international diplomatic incident after a formal complaint from Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma lodged with then British PM Tony Blair that threatened to sour relations and damage trade between the two countries. In the city of Patna in Bihar, India, angry protestors marched in the streets and burned effigies in protest of the show, terming it 'Bigot Brother'.

During a parliamentary Prime Minister's Question Time session Blair responded that "We should oppose racism in all its forms." Gordon Brown, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, who was in India on a goodwill visit, condemned the controversy as "offensive" and the opposite of what Britain stood for: "I want Britain to be seen as a country of fairness and tolerance. Anything that detracts from that I condemn." In an official statement, Channel 4 denied that overt racial abuse or behaviour had been directed at Shetty, but acknowledged that a "cultural and class clash" was responsible for the disputes. After a thorough investigation, OFCOM made an unprecedented move and issued a ruling that Channel 4 were guilty of broadcasting potentially racist material, and required them to make multiple apologies on air during the next ''Big Brother'' season.

Richard Gere kissing incident

On 15 April 2007, Richard Gere kissed Shetty on the cheek several times in jest during an AIDS-awareness event. The pair were appearing at a press conference in New Delhi as part of a campaign to preach safe sex to truck drivers in India and promote AIDS awareness. The kiss, considered an attack on India's cultural and moral values, prompted protesters – alleged members of the extremist Hindu group Shiv Sena – to beat burning effigies of Gere with sticks. Others set fire to glamour shots of Shetty. People demanded an apology from her and threatened to ban her movies in the state. Shiv Sena leaders denied involvement in the protests, but Shiv Sena member of parliament Sanjay Raut observed that the protests are "just a manifestation of the anger of the general public" and that there was "nothing wrong with expressing contempt at such an act".

Similar protests broke out in other cities, including Varanasi, Hinduism's holiest city, and the northern town of Meerut, where crowds of hundreds of thousands chanted "Down with Shilpa Shetty!" The STAR News office was also attacked. The protests did not take any violent turn and the situation was quickly brought under control, with some activists being detained.

Shetty responded to these protests by saying, "I understand this (kissing) is his (Gere's) culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such a manner. I understand people's sentiments, but I do not want a foreigner to take bad memories from here."

On 26 April 2007, an Indian court in Rajasthan issued a warrant for Shetty and Gere's arrest.

The legal action against both Shetty and Gere has been suspended by the Indian Supreme Court until the court decides on the case's proper jurisdiction. Gere has since expressed regret for causing any offence and Shetty has said, "so much has been blown out of proportion."

Karisma Kapoor (born 25 June 1974), often informally referred to as Lolo, is an Indian actress appearing in Bollywood films. She made her acting debut in 1991, and during the early 1990s established herself as a popular actress with several commercially successful films. ''Raja Hindustani'' (1996), her biggest commercial success, was the most notable of them, as it gained her wider recognition as an actress and won her a first Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She won another Filmfare Award and a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for ''Dil To Pagal Hai'' (1997). She surprised critics and audiences with her performances in films such as ''Fiza'' (2000) and ''Zubeidaa'' (2001), for which she earned Best Actress and Best Actress (Critics) trophies at Filmfare. Since 2003, Kapoor has been less active in cinema. Kapoor will featured in her comeback movie ''Dangerous Ishq'' (2012).

Early life

Kapoor was born in Mumbai to Randhir Kapoor, an actor popular during the 1970s and 80s, and actress Babita. She is the granddaughter of actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor, great-granddaughter of actor Prithviraj Kapoor, grand-niece of actors Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, sister of actress Kareena Kapoor, niece of actors Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor, and first-cousin of actor Ranbir Kapoor. Kapoor studied at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai until grade six.

Career

Debut and early work (1991-1995)

Kapoor made her debut in the 1991 movie ''Prem Qaidi'', which was a semi-hit. Although most of her multiple releases from 1992-1996 failed to do well at the box office, she had some success with films like ''Jigar'' (1992), ''Anari'' (1993), ''Raja Babu'' & ''Suhaag'' (1994), ''Coolie No. 1'' & ''Gopi Kishan'' (1995), ''Saajan Chale Sasural'' & ''Jeet'' (1996) ''Judwaa'' & ''Hero No. 1'' (1997).

Success and critical acclaim (1996-2002)

In 1996, Kapoor played the female lead in Dharmesh Darshan's ''Raja Hindustani'' opposite Aamir Khan. The movie was the highest grossing film of the year and she won her first Filmfare Best Actress Award. The following year, she won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award and the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Yash Chopra's super-hit, ''Dil To Pagal Hai'' opposite Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit.

Kapoor took a year break from films in 1998. Her diminutive comeback in 1999 proved to be good as she took part in the year's most successful films. Kapoor starred in four absolute hits. David Dhawan's comedy ''Biwi No.1'' opposite Salman Khan became the biggest hit of the year. She proved to have success with comedy films, as David Dhawan's another film ''Haseena Maan Jaayegi'' did fairly well at the box office.

Kapoor also collaborated for the first time with the Rajshri Productions banner with ''Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United'' which also resulted in a hit. Her last release, ''Jaanwar'' opposite Akshay Kumar, was another box office hit, making her the most successful actress of the year.

In 2000, she won her second Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance in Khalid Mohammed's ''Fiza''. Her performance in the film was highly acclaimed and several critics noted her for showing great emotional range and depth. Mimmy Jain of ''The Indian Express'', in a positive review, wrote, "As the young girl who is sick of the suspense and disruption that her brother's disappearance has caused in her family's life, as the obstinate daughter who will not listen to her mother's plea to let her keep hoping for her son, as the determined sister who keeps on in her hunt for her brother despite all odds and then seeks to keep him on the right path, this is a new Karisma, and one that delivers a superbly flawless performance."

In 2001, She also achieved critical acclaim for her role in the film, ''Zubeidaa''. Her performance was appreciated with film critic Taran Adarsh who believed that she "looks every bit the character she is portraying and the effort is laudable. She essays the multifaceted character with flourish and scores every time she comes on screen." ''The Tribune'' complimented her by arguing that she "has surpassed herself as the passionate, defiant, wilful and troubled Zubeidaa, the truly modern woman." For her work, she was awarded the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.

In 2002, Her performance in ''Shakti - The Power'', was highly appreciated. Kapoor's performance was applauded by critic Taran Adarsh who wrote, "the power clearly belongs to Karisma Kapoor. Breathing fire and venom to win back her son from the clutches of a despot, the actress gives it all to the character of a helpless mother and proves what a virtuoso performer she is. Playing the part of a wounded tigress, this is one performance that overshadows all the performances the year has seen so far", and earned her many nominations in the Best Actress category.

Sabbatical (2003-2010)

After her film ''Baaz: A Bird in Danger'', released in 2003, she took a sabbatical from full time acting for three years. ''Mere Jeevan Saathi'' (2006) in which she played a negative role, was a delayed release. During this time she appeared in a few TV shows. In 2003, she played the leading role in the television series ''Karishma: A Miracle of Destiny''. In 2008, alongside actor Arjun Rampal and director/choreographer Farah Khan, Kapoor began judging the dance show ''Nach Baliye 4'', and continued the following year with ''Hans Baliye''. In addition, she made a cameo role, along with numerous other Bollywood stars in 2007's Om Shanti Om.

Comeback (2011–present)

In 2011, Kapoor officially announced she is returning to movies in a Vikram Bhatt's next, a 3D film titled ''Dangerous Ishhq''. Kapoor also voiced the role of Chhaya in the Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer ''Bodyguard'' (2011). Kapoor will featured in the remake of ''Satte Pe Satta'' opposite Sanjay Dutt which starts in January 2012. Karisma Kapoor endorsed Babyoye.com, an online portal that sells baby care products, at Taj Lands End in Bandra.

Personal life

Karisma was engaged to Abhishek Bachchan. The engagement was announced in October 2002 on the 60th birthday of Abhishek's father, Amitabh Bachchan. Four months later in February 2003, they split up. On 29 September 2003, she married industrialist Sanjay Kapur, CEO of Sixt India. In typical Kapoor tradition, Karisma was married at the home of her grandfather (the late Raj Kapoor): R K Cottage. They opted for an hour-long Sikh wedding ceremony. The couple's daughter Samaira was born on 11 March 2005. After the birth of her daughter, there was considerable rift between her and her husband. The couple has subsequently patched-up. She gave birth to their second child, son Kiaan Raj Kapoor on 12 March 2010.

Hrithik Roshan (; born 10 January 1974) is an Indian film actor. Having appeared as a child actor in several films throughout the 1980s, Roshan made his film debut in a leading role in ''Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai'' in 2000. His performance in the film earned him Filmfare Awards for Best Actor and Best Male Debut. He followed it with leading roles in ''Fiza'' and ''Mission Kashmir'' (both 2000) and a supporting part in the blockbuster ''Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...'' (2001), which was India's highest-grossing film in the overseas market up to then.

Following through with several unnoticed performances from 2002 to 2003, he starred in the blockbusters ''Koi... Mil Gaya'' (2003) and its sequel ''Krrish'' (2006), both of which won him numerous Best Actor awards. Roshan received his third Filmfare Award for Best Actor in 2006 for his performance in the action film ''Dhoom 2'', his biggest commercial success to date, and his fourth for ''Jodhaa Akbar'', for which he was also awarded at the Golden Minbar International Film Festival. These accomplishments have established him as one of the leading contemporary actors of Hindi cinema. Biography

Early career, until 1999

Roshan's first movie role was as a child artist when he was six years old in the 1980s movie ''Aasha'', where he appeared in a dance sequence as an extra. Roshan went on to play minor roles in ''Aap Ke Deewane'' (1980) and ''Bhagwan Dada'' (1986) both of which starred his father Rakesh Roshan in the leading role. He then became an assistant director assisting in the production of his father's films ''Karan Arjun'' (1995) and ''Koyla'' (1997).

Breakthrough, 2000–2002

In 2000, Roshan made his film debut as the leading man in the film ''Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai'' opposite another debutante actress Amisha Patel. The film, which was directed by his father and saw him playing a double role, proved to be very successful at the box office and was declared a blockbuster, it also became the highest grossing film of 2000 and winner of the Filmfare Best Movie Award. Roshan's performance was well-received, and the film made him an overnight star. He eventually received both the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award and the Filmfare Best Actor Award for the role. The film entered the Limca Book of Records in 2003 for the most number of awards won by a Bollywood film – 102 awards.

Later that year, Roshan starred in Khalid Mohammed's ''Fiza''. Although the film did poorly at the box office, his performance was praised, earning him another nomination for ''Best Actor'' at the Filmfare ceremony. Taran Adarsh from ''indiaFM'' noted, "The mainstay of the film is undoubtedly Hrithik Roshan. His body language, his diction, his expressions, his overall persona deserves great praise. With this film, Hrithik proves that there is more to him than just being a fashionable rage, a Mills & Boon lover-boy and a sex symbol. His talent comes to the fore in several scenes, especially those with Karisma. All said and done, the show belongs to Hrithik, who saves ''Fiza'' to a major extent. A brilliant performance undoubtedly!"

Roshan's last release of the year, ''Mission Kashmir'', became the third highest grossing film of the year. His performance was once again acclaimed with one critic praising him, "Hrithik once again cuts a splendid performance as a youngster sucked in the vortex of terrorism. He is portrayed as anti-government in the early part of the film-- a bold role to play for even a seasoned actor, leave alone a budding superstar." All these achievements promoted him as one of the biggest stars in the industry.

Subhash Ghai's ''Yaadein'' was his first release in 2001. This was followed by Karan Johar's melodramatic ''Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham'', which did extremely well at the box office, becoming the second-highest grossing film of 2001 and the biggest hit overseas. Roshan's performance was well received and his performance earned him a nomination for ''Best Supporting Actor'' at various award ceremonies.

Roshan had an unsuccessful year in 2002 when all three of his releases – ''Mujhse Dosti Karoge!'', ''Na Tum Jaano Na Hum'' and ''Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage'' – failed to make an impact the box office and were declared flops.

Success, 2003–present

In 2003, he made a comeback with the science-fiction film ''Koi... Mil Gaya'', which saw him playing a mentally disabled young man. The film was the highest grosser of the year and won him many awards, including his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor and his first Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. Taran Adarsh noted, "Hrithik Roshan dominates the show and packs in a power-packed performance. The role of a mentally challenged person is no cakewalk, but the actor takes to it like a fish takes to water. He manages to pull off the zero to hero routine exceptionally well. As an actor, he scales dizzier heights with this splendid performance." His performance was later included in the 2010 issue of the "Top 80 Iconic Performances" by Filmfare. Farhan Akhtar's ''Lakshya'' was Roshan's only release in 2004; the film was critically acclaimed but did not do well at the box office. His performance was praised by critics. and again, was included in the 2010 issue of the "Top 80 Iconic Performances" by Filmfare.

Roshan took a two-year break from acting before resurfacing with the superhero film ''Krrish'' opposite Priyanka Chopra. A sequel to his 2003 film ''Koi... Mil Gaya'', the film was a major box office success and became the second highest grosser of 2006. His performance as a superhero was praised, earning him many ''Best Actor'' awards at various award ceremonies, including Star Screen and the International Indian Film Academy. ''IndiaFM'' wrote, "To state that Hrithik is the soul of ''Krrish'' would be an understatement. If the actor walked away with all noteworthy awards in ''Koi... Mil Gaya'', it's going to be an encore with ''Krrish''. You cannot imagine any other actor enacting the role of a gifted child with aplomb. If his mask and robe look is splendid, watch his makeup, gait and mannerisms as the aged father and you had agree, he's one of the finest talents on the Indian screen today. ''Krrish'' is yet another ground-breaking film in his dazzling repertoire!"

His next film that year was ''Dhoom 2'', a sequel to the 2004 ''Dhoom''. Featured opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Roshan's performance in the movie not only earned him widespread critical acclaim, but also his third Filmfare Best Actor Award. The film went on to become the highest grossing film of 2006, as well as one of the most successful films of Bollywood.

In 2008, Roshan featured in Ashutosh Gowariker's ''Jodhaa Akbar'' opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. He played the historical role of Akbar the Great. The movie did very good business, both in India and abroad. His performance in the movie was widely appreciated by critics, earning him his fourth Filmfare Best Actor Award as well as his first international award for Best Actor at the Golden Minbar International Film Festival in Kazan, Russia.

Roshan then appeared in Zoya Akhtar's ''Luck by Chance'' (2009), in which he made a guest appearance. The following year, he was seen in Anurag Basu's ''Kites'' along with Mexican actress Bárbara Mori and Kangna Ranaut. The film failed to do well at the box office after taking a huge start and was eventually declared a flop. He next acted in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ''Guzaarish'' opposite Aishwarya Rai. Upon release, the film received overwhelmingly positive reviews and Roshan's portrayal of Ethan Mascarenhas, a quadriplegic patient earned him several ''Best Actor'' nominations at various award ceremonies.

In July 2011, he appeared in Zoya Akhtar's ''Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'' alongside Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif, Kalki Koechlin. The film opened to positive reviews, and Roshan's portrayal was praised. According to Rajeev Masand, "Hrithik Roshan once again brings real depth to his character with a spectacular performance. He’s shy and restrained, then lets go with such fantastic intensity that you make the inward journey with his character". The film was declared as "super-hit" in both in India and Overseas. In the same year Roshan featured as a judge for the dance competition reality show, ''Just Dance'' along with Farah Khan and Vaibhavi Merchant. The show got the highest opening (a cumulative TRP of 4.7) for a reality show that year for which he was voted as the best TV host by a poll conducted by Ormax Media. In 2012, he then appeared in ''Agneepath'' in which he reprise the role of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan opposite Priyanka Chopra. The film has taken a historic opening and has broken all opening-day records.

Besides acting, Roshan made his debut as a singer in ''Kites'', and has also sung in the films ''Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'' and ''Guzaarish''.

Personal life

Roshan was born in Mumbai to a Hindu family of cinema personalities. His father, film director Rakesh Roshan, is the son of music director Roshan, while his mother, Pinky, is the daughter of producer and director J. Om Prakash. Hrithik has an ''elder'' sister, Sunaina. His uncle Rajesh Roshan is a famous music director. As a child, Roshan attended the Bombay Scottish School. He later attended Sydenham College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Commerce.

During an interview he revealed that his childhood was traumatized because of stammering, a defect that surfaced when he was around six years old and plagues him even today. "For oral tests at school, I used to bunk school, I used to fall sick, I used to break my hand, I used to get a sprain" the actor said. He however said that things improved for him gradually, after he started practicing speech therapies on a daily basis.

Roshan is married to Suzanne (Khan) Roshan, owner of ''Suzanne Roshan's House of Design'' and daughter of actor Sanjay Khan. Hrithik got married to Suzanne on 20 December 2000. The couple have two sons, Hrehaan, born in 2006 and Hridhaan born in 2008. Roshan has two thumbs on his right hand. Although it is usually hidden in his films, it was not hidden in ''Koi... Mil Gaya'', and was even used as a minor plot point, as Jaadu the alien was also designed to have two thumbs.

Awards and honours

Among other awards, Roshan has won six Filmfare Awards, four of which are in the Best Actor category.

A life-size wax figure was installed at London's Madame Tussauds Wax Museum on 20 January 2011, making him the fifth Indian actor to have been replicated as a wax statue in the museum.
