Distro Review: Gentoo Linux
Distro Review: Gentoo Linux
First off, I realize that I just barely scratched the surface with this review. I thought about going through the install procedure, but I have no interest in editing hours of video down to just a few minutes. :) I wanted to show that Gentoo has a very decent community behind it and that with a little work, you can actually make it work for you. It's not quite as scary as I once thought. Gentoo LiveDVD can be found on this page (as well as all of the other downloads): www.gentoo.org Sabayon can be downloaded here: sabayonlinux.org Awesome background created by rimdeker in my chat room. Using Gentoo Linux in K-12 School's Computer Lab
Using Gentoo Linux in K-12 School's Computer Lab
GHCA built custom computers from bare-bone systems using the Gentoo distribution of the Linux operating system. This video interviews system administrator Michael Surran, exploring the details as to why the school switched to Gentoo and how Gentoo is used to improve productivity and functionality. Of particular interest is the use of distributed compiled computing (distcc) among the 20 Athlon computers to greatly speed the software building process. UPDATE - this video is quite old, so we now run Neoware thin clients with LCD Dell Monitors. However, we're still using Gentoo! To learn more, visit www.ghca.com

Runes of Magic Running On Linux (Gentoo) With Wine (HD)
Runes of Magic Running On Linux (Gentoo) With Wine (HD)
Title: Runes of MagicOperating System: Gentoo Linux AMD64 Compatibility Layer: Wine Recording Software: ffmpeg's x11grab This is Runes of Magic under Gentoo Linux using wine. Runes of Magic is a free-to-download and free-to-play MMORPG. The game was installed in cedega but it does not currently run in cedega so I am running it with wine. I used the multi-part download to install. According to the apps database it should install fine in wine as well. This was recorded after just a couple of minutes running the game. I have not done any tweaking to improve the framerate or changed many settings in the game. This is after simply clicking the "High" graphics option and going. I recorded this with ffmpeg. The game cursor shows a black border in the video but that is an artifact of the capture software. That was not present in the game. Also, on the character select screen I get a crash report dialog. It does not seem to have any affect on the game unless I try to move it. If I try to move that dialog the game will freeze. Instead I simply click within the game window and let the dialog sit behind it. I am not sure if this happens when running fullscreen or not. I look forward to making more videos of games running in Linux and Mac OS X. Here are my system specs as per the cedega system dialog cpu: AMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad-Core ...
