The movie, "Innocence of Muslims," that mocks and insults the Prophet Muhammad caused demonstrators to attack a US consulate in Libya, killing one American, and breached the walls of the US Embassy in Cairo. Angry protests over the film by a US producer, directed and produced by an Israeli-American real-estate developer who characterized it as a political effort to call attention to the hypocrisies of Islam. It has been promoted by Terry Jones, the Florida pastor whose burning of Qurans previously sparked deadly riots around the world. In Benghazi, Libya, several dozen gunmen from an Islamist group, Ansar al Sharia, attacked the consulate with rocket-propelled grenades to protest the film, a deputy interior minister for the Benghazi region told the Al-Jazeera network. A government brigade evacuated the consulate, after which militants set it on fire, said the minister, Wanees Sharef. One State Department officer was killed in the attack in Benghazi, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday night. Mrs. Clinton said the State Department was working with Libyans to secure the compound and protect Americans in Libya. To the east, in Cairo, a crowd of some 2000 people gathered at the Embassy to protest the video. Some of them climbed the embassy walls late Tuesday, pulling down and burning an American flag. Guatemala's Fuego volcano has erupted, spewing out smoke and ash, forcing the widespread evacuation of thousands of Guatemalans living in the shadow of the massive volcano. With little time to prepare for the sudden evacuation, Red Cross officials and volunteers were called in to help terrified families settle into temporary shelter at a local school in the Santa Lucia municipality. This Red Cross volunteer explained how many people there were currently receiving aid at the centre. "At the moment, we have accounted for 304 people, we have 97 boys, 93 girls, 95 women and 19 men. Amongst them are five pregnant women and four people with disabilities, one person, who is not self-mobile and arrived in a plastic chair, because they do not have a wheelchair, and this is what is worrying us the most as well." According to authorities, some 8000 people have been evacuated and an additional 23000 are awaiting evacuation in towns surrounding the massive volcano. This is the second big eruption in the last two years for the country following the eruption of Pacaya in 2010, which is one of Guatemala's four active volcanoes. It then covered Guatemala City with a layer of ash, closing the airport, and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of families. We are continuing to receive reports on this volcano story. Ieng Thirith, the former social affairs minister for the Khmer Rouge who has been jailed since 2007, has been found unfit to stand trial at the UN-backed tribunal and is scheduled to be released Friday morning. Tribunal prosecutors have until tomorrow to appeal Thursday's decision by the Trial Chamber of the court, which found that Ieng Thirith, who is 80, is unable to stand trial due to mental degradation, likely due to Alzheimer's disease. The Trial Chamber ruled she was not likely to be fit for trial in the foreseeable future, but it did not drop charges of atrocity crimes against her. She will not be allowed to leave the country and must not interfere with the work of the court. She must not contact witnesses or others involved in her case or the case of her husband, former foreign minister Ieng Sary. Ieng Thirith was arrested and charged alongside Ieng Sary in November 2007. Ieng Sarry is currently on trial alongside two other regime leaders—Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan—for crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge under their leadership. International prosecutor Andrew Cayley said late Thursday he was considering whether to appeal the decision to release Ieng Thirith. Stephen Rapp, the US ambassador at large for war crimes, who is on a short visit to Cambodia, told reporters Thursday the decision of the court showed a "fundamental principle" of legal systems. "Obviously it's important for a person to be tried that they be competent and able to assist in their defense," he ...
