www.eutoxita.com This is my follow-up to "5 Themes of Geography". I'm teaching science now but my friend & colleague requested something to help students remember and understand how latitude and longitude work. There are references to Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and Bob Dylan. Special thanks to my daughter for making the Dylanesque cards and to my son for loaning me his football jersey. Go Rams! Enjoy! The Great Camera Shootout 2011: Episode 1 ~ "The Tipping Point"
In the most scientific camera comparison to date, "The Great Camera Shootout 2011: a documentary of the Single Chip Camera Evaluation (SCCE)" premieres with Episode 1: ''The Tipping Point." The first episode of the 3-part web series examines three SCCE Tests: The Dynamic Range Test, The Under Exposure Test and The Over Exposure Test.
Robert Primes, ASC, designed and administered the full series of tests. "That's right," says Web Series Director Steve Weiss,"We didn't want people to think that these tests were biased in any way. So Bob created the SCCE as an independent organization to conduct the testing." Additionally, Bob Primes designed the tests with his own technicians and selected the cameras to be tested.
The impressive 12-Camera line-up includes: 35mm Kodak 5213 & 5219 Film, Arri Alexa, RED ONE M-X, Weisscam HS-2, Phantom Flex, Sony F-35, Sony F3, Panasonic AG-AF100, Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 7D and Nikon D7000. In addition to the SCCE tests, the web series features commentary from some of the top DPs in the industry, which was filmed at worldwide screening locations in Sydney, Amsterdam, New York, London, Las Vegas (NAB) and Hollywood "You'll hear from indie filmmakers, event shooters, commercial DPs, directors and corporate filmmakers," says Steve Weiss, "Although you are not watching these tests in a 2K theatrical setting, hearing such commentary from people in the ASC, BSC, ACS, CSC, NSC, ICG and the SOC, will help you evaluate the significance of these tests."
This first episode of the series looks at the dynamic range and usable latitude of each camera. "We need to see how these cameras record real scenes," says Jens Bogehegn. Thus, Bob Primes, ASC, designed an under-exposure scene and an over-exposure scene. In regards to methodology, the camera master had to set their camera to record the widest dynamic range and they were not allowed to change any settings between the two scenes. The combination of both of these scenes will show the usable dynamic range of each camera. The featured scenes are shot by Michael Bravin and lit by Matt Siegel and Nancy Schreiber, ASC.
***The featured tests include three scenes: a back-lit test chart shot by Michael Bravin, an under-exposure scene lit by Matt Siegel and an over-exposure scene lit by Nancy Schreiber, ASC.

A History of the World in 100 Seconds
Many wikipedia articles have coordinates. Many have references to historic events. Me (@godawful) and Tom Martin (@heychinaski) cross referenced the two to create a dynamic visualization of Wikipedia's view of world history. Watch as empires fall, wars break out and continents are discovered.
This won "Best Visualization" at Matt Patterson's History Hackday in January, 2011. To make it, we parsed an xml dump of all wikipedia articles (30Gb) and pulled out 424,000 articles with coordinates and 35,000 references to events. Cross referencing these produced 15,500 events with locations. Then we mapped them over time.

Testing Canon's ISO noise in Video mode on the 60D
Technicolor just released a Picture Profile called CineStyle (bit.ly/lTApYK) for Canon DSLR's. It's similar to the SuperFlat style most users have defined for themselves, but seems to be providing HUGELY better latitude in the shadows. This obviously creates a wonderful image to work with when colour correcting.
Anyway, in their support document, they suggest, along with specific settings for Contrast and Saturation, that ISO be used in multiples of 160. I wanted to see if this was true, so I ended up doing a little home experiment...
Shutter Speed: 1/50th
Frame Rate: 24
Music by: Andrew Schär - "Outnumbered" (Yip, it's one of my songs. Check out http://about.me/andrewschar for more info, or to download my music for free, go straight to: http://bit.ly/ajs-mu)
The results as you can see in the video, are pretty much spot on with what Technicolor has said. Interestingly enough, it seems to me that ISO 640 has about as much noise as ISO 100.
It also seems that ISO multiples of 125 are specifically bad. ISO 1250 is pretty much comparable to IS0 125!
NOTE* For the purposes of this test, I boosted Curves to make the noise more observable, so it won't be this bad in the real world! I've also added two pictures of screenshots from low to high noise.
It clearly illustrates that best ISO's to use for video, starting from lowest noise level to highest are as follows:
160, 320, 640, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1250, 125, 250, 500, 1000, 1600, 2500, 2000, 3200, 4000, 5000, 6400.
Of course, if you're shooting low-light and you need a high ISO, the best ones to go for would be: 1600, 2500, 3200 & 5000.
If there's plenty light, keep things on ISO 160.
Multiples of 160 are best, then multiples of 100 and then multiples of 125.
Vincent Laforet says that ISO in Still Photography is different compared to when shooting video. I did a quick test using the exact settings from this test.
The result? It seems it is different - there's WAY more RGB colour noise, and from what I can see, ISO 160 still somehow manages to sneak in as king of low noise.
