Eric Vaughn Show ( /ˈʃaʊ/; May 19, 1956 – March 16, 1994) was a Major League Baseball player who played for most of his career with the San Diego Padres. The pitcher holds the Padres record for most career wins, and he was a member of the first Padres team to play in the World Series. On September 11, 1985, he surrendered Pete Rose's record-breaking 4,192nd career hit. Show's career and life were affected by drug abuse.

Show was born in Riverside, California. He played college baseball at University of California, Riverside.^[1]

Show made his debut in late September of 1981, and the following year went 10-6 while splitting time between the starting rotation and bullpen. In 1983 he won 15 games. In 1984, he followed with a 15-9 record. However, he struggled in the postseason, going a combined 0-2 with a 12.38 earned run average in three games.

"The Hit"[link]

On September 11, 1985, Show became famous for giving up Pete Rose's 4,192nd hit, which surpassed Ty Cobb's all-time career record of 4,191 hits. Show sat on the mound and folded his arms during the delay to honor Rose.^[1] Mike Shatzkin in The Ballplayers: Baseball's Ultimate Biographical Reference wrote that Show was "disgruntled (perhaps rightly so) at the lengthy interruption of the contest."^[2] Padre Garry Templeton later call Show's actions "bush."^[3] Then he got into a dugout shoving match with left fielder Carmelo Martínez, over a ball that fell for a single and led to the game-winning run. Finally, Show refused to stay to answer the post-game questions, leaving his teammates to criticize him in his absence.

"I'm tired of hearing about his unlucky luck," said Tim Flannery. "That's been at the root of the problem all year. If something goes wrong, he quits. That's why runs aren't scored for him. Guys don't want to play for him. One guy got tired of hearing it."^[4]

Before the game, when Show had been asked about the possibility of giving up "The Hit", he responded: "I guess it doesn't mean as much to me as it does to other baseball enthusiasts. I mean, in the eternal scope of things, how much does this matter? I don't like to say this, but I don't care. ... Don't get me wrong. I'm certainly not putting down Pete. It's a fantastic accomplishment."^[5] "Gosh, he felt so bad after that, and he didn't know how to articulate it,” said teammate Dave Dravecky. “Sometimes when you're brilliant like he was, the simplest of things are the hardest of things to express."^[1] Show later offered, "We have a choice – to think or not to think – and I've come to the conclusion that most of these guys don't want to think about anything but baseball, and I'm kind of ostracized for that."^[1]

Graig Nettles said, "The Birch Society is going to expel Eric for making a Red famous." ^[6]

Show made his last appearance on the National League leaderboard in 1988, a season in which he went 16-11 with 13 complete games and pitched 234 2/3 innings. His effectiveness diminished significantly after that season and by 1990 he had lost his regular spot in San Diego's rotation. The Padres did not pick up his option and bought out his contract for $250,000.^[7] He signed with Oakland as a free agent the following year and was cut the following season. He also played in 1990-91 with the Mayaguez Indians of the Puerto Rican Winter League.

Controversial moments[link]

On July 7, 1987, Show hit the year's eventual MVP Andre Dawson in the left cheekbone with a fastball during a game. Dawson had homered in 3 of his last 5 plate appearances at that point, and the Cubs reacted with a bench-clearing brawl. Show and his manager, Larry Bowa, later denied that the pitch was purposeful, while Bowa acknowledged that he could understand why the Cubs would think it was.^[8]

Personal life[link]

In 1984, he revealed that he was a member of the far-right John Birch Society.^[9] He was also a jazz musician.

He was once arrested by the police in downtown San Diego while yelling that someone was trying to kill him. Placed inside the police car, he kicked out the window and fled on foot. He was apprehended later that same day. Show additionally showed up at the Oakland A's training camp with bandaged hands after police had pursued him on another occasion after reports were made of his acting oddly inside an adult bookstore.^[10]

Death[link]

After his retirement from baseball, Show fell victim to drug abuse. He died on March 16, 1994 of a heart attack after taking a speedball (i.e. injecting a mixture of cocaine and heroin) in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in the city of Dulzura in San Diego County.^[11]

Eric Prindle (born August 30, 1976) is an American professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and former United States soldier. He currently fights for Bellator Fighting Championships.

Mixed martial arts career[link]

Eric made his professional MMA debut in 2008 with a submission loss, but has been undefeated since. Previously, Eric was a successful amateur boxer in several U.S. Armed Forces tournaments. After leaving military service, Eric devoted time to his children and wife, then decided it was time to jump back into the ring and start a brand new career in the MMA world.^[1]

Bellator Fighting Championships[link]

Eric made his Bellator debut in April 2011 at Bellator 40 where he defeated Josh Burns via TKO (Doctor Stoppage) at the end of round 2.^[2] The fight took place on the MTV2 live broadcast.^[3]

Prindle entered into the Bellator Season 5 Heavyweight Tournament.^[4] His first fight was against Abe Wagner on October 1, 2011 at Bellator 52. Prindle won the back-and-forth fight via unanimous decision.

In the semifinal round, Prindle faced Ron Sparks at Bellator 56 and needed to just 40 seconds to KO him in order to advance to the finals.

Prindle faced Thiago Santos in the finals held at Bellator 59. The bout was ruled a No Contest after Santos kicked Prindle in the groin at 1:24 of the round 1 and Prindle was unable to continue.^[5]

Eric Prindle and Thiago Santos were scheduled to have a rematch at Bellator 61 on March 16, 2012.^[6] However, on March 15, Bellator announced the fight had been pushed back a week to Bellator 62 due to Prindle having "flu-like symptoms."^[7] A week later at the Bellator 62 weigh-ins, Santos weighed in 12 pounds overweight for the rescheduled rematch and the bout was called off.^[8] Prindle was announced as the Season 5 Heavyweight Tournament Winner.

Eric Braeden (born Hans Jörg Gudegast on April 3, 1941)^[1] is a German-American film and television actor, best known for his role as Victor Newman on the soap opera The Young and the Restless, as Hans Dietrich in the 1960s TV series The Rat Patrol, and as John Jacob Astor IV in the 1997 film Titanic. Braeden won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1998 for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the role of Victor Newman.^[1][2]

Early life[link]

Braeden was born Hans Jörg Gudegast in Bredenbek, Germany (near Kiel),^[1] where his father was once mayor. He immigrated to the USA in 1959. In the United States, Braeden attended The University of Montana in Missoula.

Career[link]

Braeden accumulated many TV and film credits during his first two decades in America. In 1966 he guest-starred (credited as Hans Gudegast) as Luftwaffe Major Bentz in the second season episode 28, "Day of Reckoning" of Twelve O'Clock High (TV series). He is most notably known for his role as the German Hauptmann (Captain) Hans Dietrich on the TV series The Rat Patrol (1966–1968), as well as a starring role in the movie Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970), in which he first took the stage name of Eric Braeden. Lew Wasserman of Universal Pictures told him that no one would be allowed to star in an American film if they had a German name. After much thought he took the name Braeden from his hometown of Bredenbek.^[3]

In the 1970s he took a supporting role in the 1971 film Escape from the Planet of the Apes. Throughout the 1970s, he guest-starred in a variety of television shows including The Six Million Dollar Man, Wonder Woman, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show and also appeared in several episodes of the long-running CBS western series Gunsmoke. In 1977 he appeared in Walt Disney's Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo as the arrogant but formidable race car driver, Bruno von Stickle. He also appeared, uncredited, as Bradford Dillman's de facto stunt double in the 1978 film Piranha--Braeden had originally been cast to play Dillman's character, Paul Grogan, and had shot some underwater swimming footage before the role was recast; Braeden's stunt footage ended up in the finished film anyway.

In 1980, he was offered the role of self-made magnate Victor Newman on the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless for a 26-week run. His character imprisoned his wife's lover, and became so popular the character became a love-to-hate villain, and his contract was renewed. Still on the show today, Braeden won a Daytime Emmy for his work in 1998.

In late December 1991, Braeden and actor Peter Bergman had a physical altercation backstage. According to press reports,^{[citation needed]} after exchanging bitter words on the set, Braeden showed up at Bergman's dressing room door to further discuss the matter and violence ensued. Y&R's creator and senior executive producer William J. Bell threatened to fire them both if it ever happened again. Since then, the actors have resolved their differences and now have a cordial relationship.

In 1997, he played Colonel John Jacob Astor IV in the blockbuster film Titanic, cast because he strongly resembled the powerful millionaire.^{[citation needed]}. Braeden told Cindy Elavsky that the scene in which he drowned "was one of the scariest moments in this business for me."^[4]

In 2008, Braeden starred in "The Man Who Came Back", an independent Western film, which was written and directed by Louisiana's Glen Pitre.

Also in 2008, Braeden guest-starred in an episode of How I Met Your Mother as Robin Sr., Robin's father, trying to make his daughter act like the son he never had.

Braeden announced on October 18, 2009, in an article by Dan J. Kroll that after almost 30 years on The Young and the Restless, he was leaving the show. "We reached an impasse in the negotiations", Braeden said in an exclusive interview with celebrity news website EW.com. Braeden's last airdate was scheduled to be November 2; however, on October 23, 2009, CBS announced that Braeden had inked a new three-year deal and would remain with the soap, even agreeing to take a pay cut, which was the original issue.^[5]

On December 17, 2010, Neil Patrick Harris announced via Twitter that Braeden would not be reprising his role on How I Met Your Mother. In his tweet, Harris called Braeden a "D-Bag" for deciding on very short notice not to film a scheduled cameo for the program. Harris claimed that Braeden said the role was not substantial enough for Braeden to appear.^[6] The part was recast with Ray Wise.^[7]

Personal life[link]

Braeden is regarded as a very good tennis player.^[8] He and his wife, Dale Gudegast, were witnesses at the wedding of Bob Crane and Sigrid Valdis while on the set of Hogan's Heroes. Their son, Christian Gudegast, is a screenwriter who co-wrote the film A Man Apart, which starred Vin Diesel and was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in 2003.^[9]

Actor Clarence Williams III and former boxer Ken Norton are two of his best friends.^[8]
