Lieutenant General David Lindsay Morrison AO (born 1956) is a senior officer within the Australian Army, currently serving in the position of Chief of Army.

Early life and career[link]

David Morrison joined the Australian Army in 1979, after completing a Bachelor of Arts at the Australian National University. He graduated from the Officer Cadet School, Portsea into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps.^[1]

Between 1987 and 1988, Morrison served as the Australian Instructor at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in the United Kingdom.^[1]

In 1992, Morrison attended Army Command and Staff College, Queenscliff, and was then appointed as the Brigade Major of the 3rd Brigade, based in Townsville, Queensland.^[1] During that time he took part in Operation Lagoon, acting as chief of staff for a multinational force that provided security to the peace conference held in Bougainville during 1994. The following year he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

In 1997 he was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, holding that position until the end of 1998, when he was posted as Chief Instructor Command, Staff Operations Wing at the Army All Corps Promotion Training Centre in Canungra.^[1]

He was awarded Member of the Order of Australia in 1999 for his services as Brigade Major, Director of Preparedness and Mobilisation and CO of 2RAR.^[2]

Upon promotion to colonel in October 1999, Morrison was appointed as Colonel Operations, Headquarters International Force for East Timor (INTERFET).^[1] On his return to Australia, he was posted to the Deployable Joint Force Headquarters as Chief of Staff.^[1] He left that position at the end of 2001 to attend the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies, Canberra, where he graduated in 2002 with a Master of Arts in Strategic Studies.^[1]

Morrison was promoted to brigadier in November 2002, and commanded the 3rd Brigade from December 2002 until December 2004.^[1] He was then appointed as Director-General Preparedness and Plans - Army (DGPP-A) and held that position until his promotion to major general in December 2005.^[1]

He was appointed Commander of the Australian Defence College in January 2006, and Head Military Strategic Commitments in April 2007.^[1]

Morrison took up the appointment of Deputy Chief of Army in February 2008, replacing Major General John Patrick Cantwell. He served in this position until December, when he was appointed Land Commander Australia (LCAUST).^[1] Following a re-structure in July 2009, the post of Land Commander Australia was re-designated as Commander Forces Command.^[1] Morrison was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours List of 2010.^[3]

Morrison was promoted to lieutenant general on 23 June 2011, and assumed the post of Chief of Army in a ceremony the following day.^[4]

Steve McDaniel was born on October 20, 1951.^[1][2] He attended Jackson State Community College, and graduated from the University of Memphis in 1973.^[1][2] He serves both as Deputy Speaker and as a Representative in the Tennessee House of Representatives.^[1]

He is a member of the National Rifle Association, the Civil War Preservation Trust, the Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association and the National Restaurant Association.^[1][2][3] He is currently on the Board of Directors of the American Legislative Exchange Council, ALEC, a national association of legislators.^[4] He is also a member of the Church of Christ.^[1]

Alex Hayes started his journalistic career in magazines, working for Tatler in London as a Features Assistant between 1996 and 1998.

He then joined the Independent on Sunday as a football writer, where he reported on the Premier League, the Champions League, the England national team and European football. During his six years at the paper, he used his great language skills to land many exclusive interviews with world famous players and managers such as Ronaldinho, Eric Cantona, Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Johann Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Serge Blanco, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Didier Drogba, Aime Jacquet and Zinedine Zidane.

In 2004, Alex was recruited by the French TV channel TPS Foot (which was bought out by Canal Plus in 2006) to cover the Premier League. During the next three years, he combined his duties as the full-time UK correspondent for TPS and then Canal Plus with match-day presenting, commentating and reporting. He covered more than 250 Barclays Premier League games during his time at TPS/Canal Plus.

After a brief spell at Setanta, during which time he produced as well as directed an exclusive documentary on Didier Drogba, Alex joined Sky Sports in September 2007 as their Champions League reporter. During his time with Sky, Alex has interviewed such stars as Eric Cantona, Gianfranco Zola, Michel Platini, Karim Benzema, Patrice Evra, Lionel Messi, Gerard Houllier, Didier Drogba and Kaka.

Alex is the UK correspondent for the world famous French sports daily newspaper L'Equipe, as well as the most important radio station in France RTL.

He is also a regular contributor to the Daily Telegraph newspaper and Icon Magazine.

Alex is the author of two books: The French Revolution, a book about the influence of Gallic footballers in the UK and Claude Makélélé's Autobiography "Tout Simplement".

Paul Charles William Davies, AM (born 22 April 1946) is an English physicist, writer and broadcaster, currently a professor at Arizona State University as well as the Director of BEYOND: Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science. He has held previous academic appointments at the University of Cambridge, University of London, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, University of Adelaide and Macquarie University. His research interests are in the fields of cosmology, quantum field theory, and astrobiology. He has proposed that a one-way trip to Mars could be a viable option.

In 2005, he took up the chair of the SETI: Post-Detection Science and Technology Taskgroup of the International Academy of Astronautics. He is also an adviser to the Microbes Mind Forum.

Davies was brought up in Finchley and attended Woodhouse Grammar School on Woodhouse Road. He then studied Physics at UCL, gaining a 1st class BSc in 1967.

In 1970, he completed his PhD entitled Contributions to Theoretical Physics: (i) Radiation Damping in the Optical Continuum (ii) A Quantum Theory of Wheeler-Feynman Electrodynamics under Michael J. Seaton and Sigurd Zienau at UCL. He then carried out postdoctoral research under Fred Hoyle at Cambridge University.

Scientific research[link]

Davies' inquiries have included theoretical physics, cosmology, and astrobiology; his research has been mainly in the area of quantum field theory in curved spacetime. Notable contributions are the so-called Fulling–Davies–Unruh effect, according to which an observer accelerating through empty space will perceive a bath of thermal radiation, and the Bunch–Davies vacuum state, often used as the basis for explaining the fluctuations in the cosmic background radiation left over from the big bang. A paper co-authored with Stephen Fulling and William Unruh was the first to suggest that black holes evaporating via the Hawking effect lose mass as a result of a flux of negative energy streaming into the hole from the surrounding space. Davies has had a longstanding association with the problem of time’s arrow, and was also a forerunner of the theory that life on Earth may have come from Mars cocooned in rocks ejected by asteroid and comet impacts. During his time in Australia he helped establish the Australian Centre for Astrobiology. Davies was an author on the widely criticized Science article "A Bacterium That Can Grow by Using Arsenic Instead of Phosphorus."^[1]

Davies' talent as a communicator of science has been recognized in Australia by an Advance Australia Award and two Eureka Prizes, and in the UK by the 2001 Kelvin Medal and Prize by the Institute of Physics, and the 2002 Faraday Prize by The Royal Society. Davies received the Templeton Prize in 1995.

Davies was made a member of the Order of Australia in the 2007 Queen's birthday honours list.

The asteroid 6870 Pauldavies is named after him.

Davies writes and comments on scientific and philosophical issues. He made a documentary series for BBC Radio 3, and two Australian television series, The Big Questions and More Big Questions. His BBC documentary The Cradle of Life featured the subject of his Faraday Prize lecture. He writes regularly for newspapers and magazines worldwide. He has been guest on numerous radio and television programmes including the children podcast programme Ask A Biologist.

An opinion piece published in the New York Times^[2] generated controversy over its exploration of the role of faith in scientific inquiry. Davies argued that the faith scientists have in the immutability of physical laws has origins in Christian theology, and that the claim that science is "free of faith" is "manifestly bogus."^[2] The Edge Foundation presented a criticism of Davies' article written by Jerry Coyne, Nathan Myhrvold, Lawrence Krauss, Scott Atran, Sean Carroll, Jeremy Bernstein, PZ Myers, Lee Smolin, John Horgan, Alan Sokal and a response by Davies beginning I was dismayed at how many of my detractors completely misunderstood what I had written. Indeed, their responses bore the hallmarks of a superficial knee-jerk reaction to the sight of the words "science" and "faith" juxtaposed.^[3] While atheists Richard Dawkins^[4] and Victor J. Stenger^[5] have criticised Davies' public stance on science and religion, others, including the John Templeton Foundation have praised his work. Davies wrote an article in the Wall Street Journal where he described the background to the 2 Dec 2010 arsenic bacteria press conference and stated that he supported the 'arsenic can replace phosphorus' idea of Felisa Wolfe-Simon because "I had the advantage of being unencumbered by knowledge. I dropped chemistry at the age of 16, and all I knew about arsenic came from Agatha Christie novels." ^[6]
