Hip dysplasia
Gary at 7 months old walking around. His normal walk to him was always painful, and he sometimes would hop around. His right hip had severe dysplasia to the point that his joint was dislocated, left joint was bad and grinds in the socket. He also had bad elbows and shoulders, but his back legs are really the only limping we noticed. He got surgery to fix up all his joints at 10 months. **UPDATE** Gary passed away aged only 3 years old. His kidneys failed him in the end. Poor pup suffered so much through life, but always had a positive attitude.

Canine Hip Dysplasia
www.petdoghealthcare.com -- Canine Hip Dysplasia (1) The growing popularity of larger breeds of dogs has brought with it a threat of a crippling disease of the hip joints known as hip dysplasia. This disease was first described in the United States back in the 1930s. Research has produced abundant information on hip dysplasia, but many questions still remain unanswered. It is one of the most popular topics discussed among owners, breeders, and veterinarians. Hip dysplasia is uncommon in small dogs (toys and miniatures), as well as Greyhounds, but it has been found in almost every breed. The disease is an improper development of the hip joint (properly called the coxofemoral joint) which leads to looseness of the joint, partial dislocation (subluxation), and finally, arthritis. Basically, the hip is a ball-and-socket type of joint. If the socket is too shallow, or the ball to flattened, the result is an unstable joint which tends to come out of place. The most commonly affected breeds are: German Shepherd, St. Bernard, Labrador Retriever, Boxer, Springer Spaniel, Great Dane, and the Bull Mastiff. This is by no means a complete or accurate list, since incidence depends a lot on breed popularity. That is to say, it is possible that the Komondor or Great Pyrenees breeds have a high incidence of dysplasia, but, when the average veterinary clinic sees one of either breed every two to three years, how can an accurate breed incidence be determined? Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: Before and After Surgery
Gary is a result of poor breeding. He has hip and elbow dysplasia. We took him to water therapy classes to help keep him limber and exercised, but the pain worsened. At 10/11 months old he got the FHO surgery on one hip and had both his elbows operated on as well. I wanted to make this video because a lot of people have been asking how the surgery was and what to expect after it. I hope this helps! *edit* Oct 2010 Gary passed away due to kidney failure. We were happy to have had him in our lives. RIP sweet boy.

Hip dysplasia 2
A normal trip to the bathroom for Gary 8mo puppy with hip dysplasia (getting distracted by a cat). Notice his occasional bunny hop and short range of motion for his stride. *edit* Oct 2010 Gary passed away due to kidney failure, something no one saw coming. We all thought his hips would one day cause us to have to put him to sleep, we were all shocked and saddened to see him go. Please watch his other videos to see him happy after surgery on his hips, during his prime. RIP sweet boy.
