Iran Says It Won't Return US Drone
BY LAUREN ZIMA The Fars News Agency, which has ties to the Iranian government, is reporting that Iran's top general says the country will not return a US RQ-170 drone it claims it downed in Eastern Iran. Newser quotes General Hossein Salami, who called the drone a, quote, "hostile" attack by the US, and warned of a bigger response from Iran. "No nation welcomes other countries' spy drones in its territory, and no one sends back the spying equipment and its information back to the country of origin ... It makes no difference where this drone originated and which group or country sent it to invade our air space. This was an act of invasion and belligerence." The White House confirmed early last week that the drone was part of a CIA reconaissance mission and that it was missing. Salami called its capture a victory for Iran and a defeat for the US But -- is the drone Iran has definitely the US drone? CBS explains. "In video released by Iran, the drone appears nearly intact -- something American officials can't or won't explain. The US military says it lost control of a drone earlier this week and doesn't deny the Iranians now have it. Iran could try to reverse engineer the aircraft or hand it over to China or Russia." Iran says the drone is intact because it wasn't shot down -- instead, officials say, the drone was taken down in a cyber attack. The Daily Mail reports that the US refutes the claim. "American officials have said that US intelligence assessments indicate that ...

Iran unveils "Karrar" a long range bombing drone - 22 August 2010
Iranian leaders on Sunday unveiled a bomber drone with a range of up to 1000 kilometres, touting the Islamic republic's home-grown capacity to resist attack, state media reported. Television footage showed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad applauding as a blue cloth covering the drone -- called Karar ("Assailant") -- was removed to reveal a short aircraft marked "bomber jet" in military-green. "This jet, before it heralds death for enemies, is the messenger of salvation and dignity for humanity," Ahmadinejad said in a speech at the unveiling in a hall at Tehran's Malek Ashtar university. The broadcast showed the high-speed unmanned aircraft in flight, while Fars news agency quoted Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi as saying the drone had a range of up to 1000 kilometres (620 miles). State television said the drone was built to "carry and fire four stealth cruise missiles... and, depending on the mission, it can carry two bombs of 250 pounds (115 kilos) each or a precision missile of 500 pounds (230 kilos)." Iran upgrades and succesfully test launches S-200 SAM
UPDATE: Iran hails transforming Russian S-200 Tue Jul 12, 2011 3:31PM The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says Iran has managed to upgrade the Russian-made long-range S-200 air defense system into an entirely new apparatus. IRGC Air Defense Commander Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili said Iran has introduced such wholesale enhancements into the system that it can be assigned a new name, Fars News Agency reported on Tuesday. He said the system has been wholly optimized that its configuration totally differs from what the Russians had designed. "Of course, the changes have also received the confirmation and commendation of the [Russian] manufacturers of the system," Esmaili said. presstv.ir ___________________________ Fars News Agency reports the succesful upgrade of the originally Russian (Soviet) S-200 antaircraft SAM (SA-5 Gammon) by the Islamic Republic of Iran's defence industry. The long-range surface-to-air missile is equipped with improved systems. The whole weapon is of domestic Iranian production. The major powers will never manage to prevent Tehran from progressing in all areas of science, society, ecomony or politics. Video date 18.02.2008 Video source: english.farsnews.ir www.farsnews.com .

Iran claims new Israel-range missile tests
www.alisanaei.com TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iran announced Wednesday that it successfully test-fired a "Sajil" missile -- a new generation of surface-to-surface missiles -- according to state-run media reports. A photo released by an Iranian news agency shows a missile test at an undisclosed location. A photo released by an Iranian news agency shows a missile test at an undisclosed location. Iran did not say when the missile was test-fired, but said it happened in the presence of Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Mostafa Mohammad Najjar. "The two-stage missile uses combined solid fuel and has a high-launching speed," Najjar said, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. He said it had a range of about 1200 miles, which could easily reach arch-foe Israel and even travel as far as southeastern Europe, The Associated Press reported. The United States restated its objection to such tests, saying they violated Iran's obligations under United Nations Security Council resolutions. Iran's state-run television network showed video of the apparent test launch. Najjar said the test showed Iran's capability to defend its territory, according to IRNA. Najjar emphasized the test launch had been planned since last year and had nothing to do with recent international and regional developments, according to the semi-official Fars news agency. US National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said the test launch was "completely inconsistent with Iran's obligations to the world." "The ...

Two Powerful Earthquakes strike Northwest Iran killing at least 300 people; M 6.3 & 6.4 8/11/2012
Two strong earthquakes struck northwest Iran on Saturday, killing 300 people and injuring more than 5000 as buildings were reduced to rubble, Iranian officials said. Thousands fled their homes and remained outdoors as at least 20 aftershocks hit the area. Casualty numbers could well rise, Iranian officials feared, as some of the injured are in a critical condition, others are still trapped under the rubble and rescuers have yet to reach some of the affected villages. Iran is straddled by major fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years, including a 6.6 magnitude quake in 2003 which turned the southeastern historic city of Bam into dust and killed more than 25000 people. The US Geological Survey measured Saturday's first quake at 6.4 magnitude and said it struck 60 km (37 miles) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9 km (6.2 miles). A second quake measuring 6.3 struck 49 km (30 miles) northeast of Tabriz 11 minutes later at a similar depth. Deputy Interior Minister Hassan Ghadami said 153 people had been killed and provincial official Khalil Sa'ie said some 1300 had been injured, the semi-official Fars news agency reported. The second quake struck near the town of Varzaghan. "The quake was so intense that people poured into the streets through fear," Fars news agency said of the town.

Iran police fire tear gas at opposition rally in Tehran
timesofearth.com Tehran - Thousands of Iranian opposition activists rallied in support of popular uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt Monday, while a semi-official Iranian news agency said one person was killed and several wounded by protesters in the capital, Tehran. Witnesses say security forces, many of them on motorbikes, fanned out across central Tehran Monday as opposition groups demonstrated despite a protest ban. Hundreds of black-clad Iranian riot police fired tear gas and paintball guns to disperse the crowds. Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said what it called "seditionists" had shot a bystander dead at the Tehran rally. Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi's Kaleme website reported that "Tehran security forces arrested dozens of protesters." There was no official confirmation of the detentions. Mousavi's website and that of fellow reformist leader Mehdi Karroubi said security forces surrounded their homes, preventing the two men from joining the march. Authorities also cut telephone lines at Mousavi's house. Some demonstrators chanted "death to the dictator" -- a slogan used by protesters against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after the disputed 2009 presidential election. By late evening Monday, chants echoed from Tehran rooftops, as they did during the unrest two years ago. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States "very clearly and directly" supports "the aspirations of the people who are in the streets of Iran today." Clinton pressed ...

Iran blast near military academy
While Iranian officials continue to deny any reports on the blast in Isfahan, other sources started to shed light on the mysterious incident. Iranian paper Farhang Ashti (Peace Culture) reported Monday that the explosion, which was initially reported by Iran's official news agency Fars, took place several streets away from the city's military academy, near the Shiraz Gate. The report's credibility remained unclear. Fars initially reported a loud blast at 2:40 pm local time, but removed the report shortly afterwards. Hours later, conflicting reports began to surface. Iran's Mehr news agency mistakenly quoted the deputy governor of Isfahan province as saying that there was no report of a major explosion in the province -- a quote given by him almost a year earlier, following a December 18, 2010 explosion in the city. However, the news agency also quoted another Iranian media outlet as saying that a blast took place at a petrol station in a nearby town. Iran's uranium conversion plant is located just outside Isfahan -- one of the country's largest cities.

Iranian protesters Storm British Embassy
Iranian protesters stormed the British Embassy in Tehran today, tossing firebombs and burning documents, but an Iranian news agency has withdrawn a report that six staff members had been taken hostage. The Iranian Foreign Ministry expressed "regret for certain unacceptable behavior by a small number of protesters in spite of efforts by the police," the BBC reports. "The relevant authorities have been asked to take the necessary measures and look into this issue immediately," the ministry said. The UN Security Council condemned the attack "In the strongest terms." Reuters quotes the Iranian semi-official FARS news agency as say that police had secured the release of six British Embassy staff who were taken hostage. There were no details. Earlier, the Iranian semi-official Mehr news agency had reported the apparent hostage-taking, but withdrew the report later from its website without explanation. The Iranian news agency, Mehr, that reported that six staff members at the British Embassy's compound in northern Tehran had been taken hostage has withdrawn the report from its web site with no explanation. The semi-official FARS news agency reports that thousands of protesters who have gathered in front of the British Embassy are demanding that the British ambassador be expelled and the embassy shut down. Britain cut all financial ties with Iran last week over concerns about Iran's nuclear program, the first time it has cut an entire country's banking sector off from British ...

Thousands in Tehran rally against Israeli actions in Gaza
Thousands of Iranians on December 29th, in Tehran, rallied against the continued Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, and called on Israel to end its hostilities. The protestors, who shouted Death to America and Death to Israel, burned Israeli and US flags and demanded a stronger response from the international community to stop the raids, which began on December 27th. Israel has said that the strikes were launched in response to continued rocket and mortar fire from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip following the end of a six-month ceasefire. Iran rejects Western charges that it supplies weapons to the Palestinian militant group, saying it provides only moral backing for Hamas. According to the state-run Press TV news agency, merchants in other Iranian cities closed their business in support for the Palestinians. Demonstrations have been held around the world since the offensive started. Thousands of protestors demonstrated in Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and a number of European capitals. AFP reports that Indonesia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other Muslim nations have condemned the attacks. Meanwhile, the conservative Fars News Agency reports that an Iranian student group announced that it had recruited 7000 university students from the central city of Esfahan to fight against Israel in the Gaza Strip. The announcement came one day after Irans supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that anyone who died in defense of Gaza would be a martyr. Mohammad Zarifi, a member of the ...
