Soft drinks are FMCGs

Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) – or consumer packaged goods (CPG) – are products that are sold quickly and at relatively low cost. Examples include non-durable goods such as soft drinks, toiletries, and grocery items.^[1][2] Though the absolute profit made on FMCG products is relatively small, they generally sell in large quantities, so the cumulative profit on such products can be substantial.

The term FMCG refers to those retail goods that are generally replaced or fully used up over a short period of days, weeks, or months, and within one year. This contrasts with durable goods or major appliances such as kitchen appliances, which are generally replaced over a period of several years.

FMCG have a short shelf life, either as a result of high consumer demand or because the product deteriorates rapidly. Some FMCGs – such as meat, fruits and vegetables, dairy products and baked goods – are highly perishable. Other goods such as alcohol, toiletries, pre-packaged foods, soft drinks and cleaning products have high turnover rates.

The following are the main characteristics of FMCGs:^[1]

• From the consumers' perspective:
  • Frequent purchase
  • Low involvement (little or no effort to choose the item – products with strong brand loyalty are exceptions to this rule)
  • Low price
• From the marketers' angle:
  • High volumes
  • Low contribution margins
  • Extensive distribution networks
  • High stock turnover

In economics final goods are goods that are ultimately consumed rather than used in the production of another good. For example, a car sold to a consumer is a final good; the components such as tires sold to the car manufacturer are not; they are intermediate goods used to make the final good.

When used in measures of national income and output the term final goods only includes new goods. For instance, the GDP excludes items counted in an earlier year to prevent double counting of production based on resales of the same item second and third hand. In this context the economic definition of goods includes what are commonly known as services.

Consumer goods are final goods specifically intended for the mass market. For instance, consumer goods do not include investment assets, like precious antiques, even though these antiques are final goods.

Manufactured goods are goods that have been processed in any way. As such, they are the opposite of raw materials, but include intermediate goods as well as final goods.

John Blanchard is a Canadian television director and producer.

He is best known for his directorial work on the sketch comedy series SCTV, The Kids in the Hall, CODCO, MADtv and the talk show The Martin Short Show for which he won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing in a Talk Show.^[1]

He also directed episodes of the sitcoms Grounded for Life, Wanda at Large, Cavemen, Unhitched,^[2] as well as a number of television films one of his notable films being The Last Polka (1985) starring John Candy and Eugene Levy.^[3] He also directed the direct-to-video Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the Thirteenth.
