NORTHERN SOUL - CHARADES - 'THE KEY TO MY HAPPINESS'
The MGM CHARADES were formed with a different line-up when the original 1950/60's Doo-wop group, who had planned a comeback, were reluctant to sign a new contract. This prompted the record label to work with a mysterious new act based in New York. However, when soul singer Dean Courtney moved from RCA records to MGM, he mentioned that John T Mac Junior had been running The Charades. The same group may be linked with the Charades that recorded 'You're With Me All The Way'/'Power Of Love' on the Mercury label in 1965 -both sides written by J. Mack. Robert Pruter's 'Chicago Soul' book, explains that only a few Chicago acts in the 60's appeared on Mercury. The producer credited on the label is Tom Wilson -best known for his work in the 1960s with Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Simon and Garfunkel and The Velvet Underground. Arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. The Charades recorded two 45's for MGM Records; 'Key To My Happiness/'Weeping Cup' (66) written by Robert Gerald Maxwell 'I Don't Want To Lose You'/'Never Set Me Free' (66) written by Maxwell flip Rhodes-Casey 'Can't Make It Without You'/'Love Of My Life' also recorded by the Charades (Okeh Records) 1964 -arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. 'You Better Believe It'/'Darling Believe Him' also by the Charades (Harlem Hitparade) Woodbury, New York 1973. Distributed by Pickwick Records, this is a much earlier recording -again, written by Horace Ott. "From the very first bars of the piano and drums this is Northern Soul at its ...

Millie Jackson - My Man, A Sweet Man
Though she first recorded for MGM records, she soon left and began her long association with Spring Records. Her first single to chart was 1971's deceptively titled "A Child of God (It's Hard to Believe)," which reached number 22 on the R&B charts. In 1972, Jackson had her first R&B Top Ten single with "Ask Me What You Want", which also reached the pop charts, which was followed up by "My Man, A Sweet Man" which reached #7 R&B. The following year she had her third Top Ten single and biggest hit with "Hurts So Good," which made # 3 on the R&B charts and #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart. The single was featured in the blaxploitation film Cleopatra Jones. c/o wikipedia.org

Tell Me A Lie-Sami Jo-'74-MGM South 7029.wmv
REGUEST SONG from amber8844 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Sami Jo (born Jane Annette Jobe on May 9, 1947 in Batesville, Arkansas) was an American country singer. She is best known for her 1974 single "Tell Me a Lie", which peaked at No. 21 on the Pop Top 40 that same year.[1] Sami Jo was raised in a religious family in Batesville, AR. She began singing on local radio at age 3 and was also a local beauty queen during high school. When she was 19 she moved to Dallas, where she acquired the nickname "Sam" from a roommate, which eventually turned into "Sami Jo".[2] Her early career was guided by Atlanta music legend Sonny Limbo. He connected Sami Jo with Rick Hall in Muscle Shoals, AL, where she recorded two singles that failed to chart. Sonny then got her a deal with MGM South, which led to Sami Jo's first hit, "Tell Me A Lie".[3] In addition to reaching #21 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, it also reached #14 on Billboard's Easy Listening chart.[4] Her follow-up single, "It Could Have Been Me", also did well, reaching #46 pop and #31 easy listening. Her first album, also entitled It Could Have Been Me, peaked at #33 on the US Country Albums chart.[5]. Despite this early success, Sami Jo did not achieve another major hit on either the pop or the country charts. In 1975, after MGM South was folded into its parent label, MGM Records, Sami Jo charted one record ("I'll Believe Anything You Say") at #62 on Billboard's Top Country Singles chart.[6] When MGM Records was merged into Polydor ...

The Velvet Underground - All Tomorrow's Parties
The Velvet Underground and Nico Studio album by The Velvet Underground & Nico The Velvet Underground and Nico is the debut album by experimental rock band The Velvet Underground and vocal collaborator Nico. It was originally released in March 1967 by Verve Records, a subsidiary of MGM Records. Recorded in 1966 during Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia event tour, The Velvet Underground and Nico would gain notoriety for its experimentalist performance sensibilities, as well as its focus on controversial subject matter in songs such as "Heroin". Though largely ignored upon its release, it has since become one of the most influential and critically lauded rock albums in history, appearing as #13 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time[1] as well as being added to the 2006 National Recording Registry by the Librarian of Congress. The Velvet Underground and Nico is sometimes referred to as the "banana album" as it features a Warhol print of a banana on the cover. Early copies of the album invited the owner to "Peel slowly and see"; peeling back the banana skin revealed a flesh-colored banana underneath. A special machine was needed to manufacture these covers (one of the causes of the album's delayed release), but MGM paid for costs figuring that any ties to Warhol would boost sales of the album.[6][3] On the 1996 CD reissue, the banana image is on the front cover while the image of the peeled banana is on the inside of the ...
