Tokyo (東京Tōkyō?, "Eastern Capital") [toːkʲoː], English: /ˈtoʊki.oʊ/; officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都Tōkyō-to?),[4] is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, and the largest metropolitan area of the world[5]. It is the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family. Tokyo is in the Kantō region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands.[6] Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture (東京府Tōkyō-fu?) and the city of Tokyo (東京市Tōkyō-shi?). en.wikipedia.org

Tokyo, officially Tokyo Metropolis is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan and is located on the eastern side of the main island Honshū. Tokyo's government also administers the twenty-three special wards of Tokyo, each governed as a city, that cover the area that was once the city of Tokyo in the eastern part of the prefecture. The population of the special wards is over 8 million people, with the total population of the prefecture exceeding 12 million. The prefecture is the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, the world's most populous metropolitan area with 35 to 39 million people (depending on definition) and the world's largest metropolitan economy with a GDP of US$1.479 trillion at purchasing power parity in 2008. Tokyo was described by Saskia Sassen as one of the three "command centers" for the world economy, along with London and New York City.[4] This city is considered an alpha+ world city, listed by the GaWC's 2008 inventory[5] and ranked fourth among global cities by Foreign Policy's 2008 Global Cities Index. In 2009 Tokyo was named the world's most expensive city for expatriate employees, according to the Mercer and Economist Intelligence Unit cost-of-living surveys [6] and named the third Most Liveable City and the Worlds Most Livable Megalopolis by the magazine Monocle.[7] Tokyo is the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family. Earthquake Shakes Tokyo Area
A strong 6.5 earthquake rattled houses across Tokyo and surrounding areas early Tuesday. Public broadcaster NHK said 43 people were hurt in Tokyo and other areas, but none seriously. A strong earthquake jolted Tokyo and surrounding areas early Tuesday, disrupting transport and closing a nuclear plant for safety checks, but resulting in no reported fatalities. Public broadcaster NHK said 43 people had been hurt in Tokyo, Shizuoka and other areas, but none seriously. The magnitude 6.5 quake rattled houses across Tokyo and prompted the suspension of train services and the closure of highways for inspections, but there were no immediate reports of major damage. The area has been hit by heavy rain since Monday and the weather agency warned of possible landslides and flooding. The quake knocked products from store shelves and caused some structural damage, while Kyodo news agency said power was cut to 9100 homes. The main expressway down the Pacific coast was closed for damage inspection and many high-speech bullet train services were suspended for safety checks, NHK said. Chubu Electric Power halted operations at its Hamaoka nuclear plant after two reactors shut down automatically following the quake. A tsunami of up to 60 cm was recorded along the Pacific coast but the tsunami warning was later lifted. Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas, accounting for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

Local solutions on a sinking paradise, Carterets Islands, Papua New Guinea
In December 2008, the low-lying Carterets Islands were badly damaged by king tides and violent storm surges. Nicholas Hakata, a local youth leader and community representative, explains that he and his family have been surviving on mainly fish and coconuts, and battling the swamp mosquitoes that have brought malaria.
With the local government's food aid ship coming once or twice a year, the relocation plans are equally as slow. Hungry and unwell, the islanders have set up a relocation team and have begun a series of urgent tasks to move families closer to security.

She has been living here the ancestral way – far removed from the services and conveniences of modern life – as part of the sublime performance of nature.
Like her ancestors before her, Marilyn walks through the Nyungkal bubu, the Nyungkal’s country, acknowledging and conversing with the Spirit beings around her.

Marilyn Wallace, a land conservation coordinator from New Queensland, Australia and a member of the Kuku Nyungkal clan, said she and her band were given a new beginning after being granted autonomy over their homelands. She urged the official delegates to take the time to "stop, look, listen and learn". Wallace and 14 other forest rangers manage their homelands in collaboration with Australian resource officials. The team is in the process of conducting a biological inventory of their range, incorporating traditional knowledge with cutting edge GIS digital mapping systems. "We are preserving the wisdom of the elders with modern technology," she said, a reminder that native people are not just victims of climate change but key players in the protection and preservation of ecosystems.
