This hazardous materials site fire in April of 1980, helped lead to the passage of the Superfund legislation later that year. The Chemical Control Corporation (CCC) site consisted of a 2-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Elizabeth River. From 1970 to 1978, CCC operated as a hazardous waste storage, treatment, and disposal facility, accepting various types of chemicals including: acids, arsenic, bases, cyanides, flammable solvents, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), compressed gases, biological agents, and pesticides. Throughout its operations, CCC was cited for discharge and waste storage violations. In 1979, the State of New Jersey initiated a site cleanup that included removal of bulk solids and liquids, drums at and below the soil surface, gas cylinders, infectious wastes, radioactive wastes, highly explosive liquids, debris, tanks, and 3 feet of soil. Excavated soil areas were replaced with a 3-foot gravel cover. An explosion and fire in 1980 interrupted the site cleanup and created additional cleanup needs; the site was completely destroyed and reportedly, drums of burning waste launched into the air. Contaminated runoff from fire fighting efforts entered the Elizabeth River. After the fire and explosion, the preliminary cleanup was accelerated and was completed in 1981. Valery Bochkov, a former KGB Advisor in Afghanistan, remembers the first days of the war. He says the Soviet army was met with flowers: I cant say that we felt like occupants, he recalls. We had a long history with Afghanistan. I have relatives who lived there and I still keep in touch with people I met there. No one expected the war to go on for a decade. Over 14000 men would die, and almost half a million would be wounded or become sick. The majority of casualties were due to poor sanitary conditions. In addition the local climate was much different to what soldiers were used to back home. Many say the war in Afghanistan was the beginning of the end for the Soviet Union. Boris Korczak is an ex CIA double access agent who worked for the CIA for 7 years. He infiltrated the KGB in the 1970's until a drunken American official exposed him in 1979 in USSR Embassy in Copenhagen. He fled to the United States in 1980 and had many attempts on his life. In 1981, in Giant Food Store in Virginia he was shot with a miniscule poisoned pellet containing ricin. He was not compensated in any way by the United States Government or the CIA. CIA did not honor their contract with Boris. The US Government chose not to be sued, hiding behind "Totten Doctrine". (The Totten doctrine is based on the 1876 Supreme Court case of Totten versus United States. The case involved the estate of an individual who performed intelligence services for President Lincoln during the Civil War. The court dismissed the plaintiff's postwar suit for breach of contract.) Korczak experienced many of the same obstacles that, outed CIA agent, Valery Plame did. To date, he has recieved no help or compensation for the United States of the CIA. He is putting the finishing touches on his tell-all book about his time in the Agency.

The Agency (known as Mind Games on video) is a 1980 Canadian dramatic/thriller film. It was directed by George Kaczender,[1] with a screenplay by Noel Hynd.[2]
Based on a novel by Paul Gottlieb,[3] it is a political thriller involving advertising copywriter Philip Morgan (Lee Majors) who discovers the agency he works for, run by Ted Quinn (Robert Mitchum), is using subliminal advertising to manipulate a presidential election. It features appearances by Canadian actors Saul Rubinek as an audio technician (earning a "Best Supporting Actor" Genie nomination),[2] Jonathan Welsh as a police detective, and familiar supporting players Michael Kirby and Gary Reineke as hitmen.
The film was shot on locations in Montréal and rural Québec.
