HP Garage
The HP Garage is a private museum where the company Hewlett-Packard (HP) was founded. It is located at 367 Addison Avenue in Palo Alto, California. It is considered to be the "Birthplace of Silicon Valley". It is a designated California historic landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The home, originally designated as 367 Addison Avenue, was first occupied in 1905 by Dr. John Spencer, his wife Ione, and their two adult daughters. Dr. Spencer was selected as the first mayor of Palo Alto in 1909. In 1918 the house was divided into two separate apartments, numbered 367 and 369.
In 1937, David "Dave" Packard (then 25 years old) visited William "Bill" Hewlett in Palo Alto and the pair had their first business meeting.
In 1938, newly married Dave and Lucile Packard moved into 367 Addison Ave, the first floor three-room apartment, with Bill Hewlett sleeping in the shed. Mrs. Spencer, now widowed, moved into the second floor apartment, 369 Addison. Hewlett and Packard began to use the one-car garage, with $538 in capital.

Alan Cox
Alan Cox (born 22 July 1968 in Solihull, England) is a British computer programmer who formerly maintained the 2.2 branch of the Linux kernel and continues to be heavily involved in the development of the Linux kernel, an association that dates back to 1991. He lives in Swansea, Wales with his wife, Telsa Gwynne.
While employed on the campus of Swansea University, Cox installed a very early version of Linux on one of the machines belonging to the university computer society. This was one of the first Linux installations on a busy network and revealed many bugs in the networking code. Cox fixed many of these bugs and went on to rewrite much of the networking subsystem. He then became one of the main developers and maintainers of the whole kernel.
He maintained the 2.2 branch, and his own versions of the 2.4 branch (signified by an "ac" in the version, for example 2.4.13-ac1). This branch was very stable and contained bugfixes that went directly into the vendor kernels. He was once commonly regarded as being the "second in command" after Linus Torvalds himself, before reducing his involvement with Linux to study for an MBA.

Ann Livermore
Ann Martinelli Livermore (born 23 August 1958, in Greensboro, North Carolina) was formerly an Executive Vice President at Hewlett-Packard, where from 2004 until June 14, 2011 she led the HP Enterprise Business business unit of HP. After being relieved of day-to-day operations, she was elected to board of directors of HP. At the time, she was a 29 year veteran of the company and among existing senior management, the longest-service executive.
Livermore was her North Carolina high school's valedictorian and she holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a Morehead Scholar, and an M.B.A. from Stanford University.
Livermore came to HP right out of graduate school. Livermore has been at HP since 1982 and has worked in a variety of sales, marketing, and research and development jobs before being elected a corporate vice president in 1995.
In 1997, Livermore was also elected to the board of directors of United Parcel Service.
In 1998, when head of HP's software and services business, the company's top executives agreed to put themselves through a 360-degree evaluation. Livermore said "I learned that I'm a very, very well-controlled executive, but that my employees like when I go off the handle every once in a while, you know, show my human side - It reinforced that leadership means touching people's hearts as well as their brains, so since then I haven't worried so much about keeping my lid on." Livermore has been credited with steering HP away from its decentralized culture and hardware mentality and was the brains behind HP's E-services strategy. When HP CEO Lewis Platt announced in March 1999 that he would step down, Livermore confirmed that she wanted the job. Insiders say Livermore was the only internal candidate who made the short list but in July 1999 HP made the former Lucent Technologies executive Carly Fiorina the first female CEO of a Dow 30 company.

Benjamin Mako Hill
Benjamin Mako Hill (born December 2, 1980) is a Debian hacker, intellectual property researcher, activist and author. He is a contributor and free software developer as part of the Debian and Ubuntu projects as well as the author of two best-selling technical books on the subject, Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 Bible (ISBN 978-0-7645-7644-7) and The Official Ubuntu Book (ISBN 978-0-13-243594-9). He currently serves as a member of the Free Software Foundation board of directors. Hill has a Masters degree from the MIT Media Lab and is a PhD candidate at the MIT Sloan School of Management where he studies free software communities and business models. He is also a Fellow at the MIT Center for Civic Media where he coordinates the development of software for civic organizing. He has worked as an advisor and contractor for the One Laptop per Child project. He is a speaker for the GNU Project, and serves on the board of Software Freedom International (the organization that organizes Software Freedom Day). Since 2006 he is married to Mika Matsuzaki, having used mathematically constrained wedding vows at the marriage ceremony.

Bruce Perens
Bruce Perens is a computer programmer and advocate in the open source community. He created the Open Source Definition and published the first formal announcement and manifesto of open source. He co-founded the Open Source Initiative (OSI) with Eric S. Raymond.
In 2005, Perens represented Open Source at the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society, at the invitation of the United Nations Development Program. He has appeared before national legislatures and is often quoted in the press, advocating for open source and the reform of national and international technology policy.
Perens is also an amateur radio operator, with callsign K6BP. He is well known in the amateur radio community for his efforts towards open radio communications standards.
Perens poses Open Source as a means of marketing the free software philosophy of Richard Stallman to business people who are more concerned with profit than freedom, and states that open source and free software are only two ways of talking about the same phenomenon. This differs from Stallman and Raymond. Perens postulates an economic theory for business use of Open Source in his paper The Emerging Economic Paradigm of Open Source and his speech Innovation Goes Public. This differs from Raymond's theory in The Cathedral and the Bazaar, which having been written before there was much business involvement in open source, explains open source as a consequence of programmer motivation and leisure.

Carly Fiorina
Carly Fiorina (born Cara Carleton Sneed; September 6, 1954) is an American business executive and a former Republican candidate for the United States Senate representing California. Fiorina served as chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard from 1999 to 2005 and previously was an executive at AT&T and its equipment and technology spinoff, Lucent. She currently serves on the boards of several organizations.
Fiorina was considered one of the most powerful women in business during her tenure at Lucent and Hewlett-Packard. The spinoff, from HP, of Agilent Technologies – which had been initiated by her predecessor, Lew Platt – was completed shortly after she joined the company in 1999. Under her leadership, in 2002, the company completed a contentious merger with rival computer company Compaq. During her tenure, HP stock lost half its value. In 2005, Fiorina was forced to resign as chief executive officer and chairman of HP following "differences [with the board of directors] about how to execute HP's strategy."

Daniel Robbins
Daniel Robbins (US citizen, born in Montreal, Quebec) is a computer programmer and consultant best known as the founder and former chief architect of the Gentoo Linux project. In 2008, he launched the Funtoo project, a free GNU/Linux distribution based on Gentoo, and is the project's lead hacker and organizer. He also currently works at the same time in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as engineer at OPNET, and as president for Funtoo Technologies.
During his time as a system administrator at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque Robbins first came into contact with Linux. He became a developer on Stampede Linux, and later formed his own distribution Enoch Linux, which was later renamed Gentoo in 2002.
The Gentoo Linux distribution created enormous interest almost immediately. It remains by far[citation needed] the most high-profile source-based Linux distribution, and the quality of its documentation, and friendliness of its forums have been widely praised.[citation needed]
However, like many other free software projects, Gentoo struggled to create a business model which would support its key developers. Robbins resigned as Chief Architect on 26 April 2004, citing considerable personal debt, and a desire to spend more time with his family, formed the Gentoo Foundation and transferred all Gentoo intellectual property to it, so that Gentoo is now run as a full community-based model. He did rejoin the project for a short time from August 2006, becoming a developer again in February 2007 and joining the amd64 team but resigned in early March 2007.

David Packard
David Packard (September 7, 1912 – March 26, 1996) was a co-founder of Hewlett-Packard (1939), serving as president (1947–1964), CEO (1964–1968), and Chairman of the Board (1964–1968, 1972–1993). He served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense from 1969–1971 during the Nixon administration. Packard served as President of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) from 1976 to 1981. He was also chairman of the Board of Regents from 1973 to 1982. Packard was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988 and is noted for many technological innovations and philanthropic endeavors.
David Packard was born in Pueblo, Colorado, and attended Centennial High School, where early on he showed an interest in science, engineering, sports, and leadership. He earned his B.A. from Stanford University in 1934, where he earned letters in football and basketball and attained membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society and was a Brother of the Alpha Delta Phi Literary Society. Stanford is where he met two people who were important to his life: Lucile Salter and William R. "Bill" Hewlett. Packard then briefly attended the University of Colorado before he left to work for the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York. In 1938, he returned to Stanford from New York, where he earned a master's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1938. In the same year, he married Lucile Salter, with whom he had four children: David, Nancy, Susan, and Julie. Lucile Packard died in 1987.

G. Kennedy "Ken" Thompson (born November 25, 1950, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina) is an American businessman who was previously chairman, president, and CEO of Wachovia Corporation, formerly First Union Corporation, from 2000 through 2008. First Union Corporation acquired Wachovia Corporation and changed its name to Wachovia in September 2001 after fending off a hostile takeover attempt by SunTrust Bank. Thompson succeeded Edward E. Crutchfield in 2000, who stepped down due to health reasons. Previous positions at First Union included vice chairman of the corporation and head of Global Capital Markets; president, First Union-Florida; senior vice president and head of First Union Human Resources; president, First Union Georgia.
Thompson previously served as president of the Federal Reserve Board's Federal Advisory Committee.
Thompson serves on the Boards of Directors for Hewlett-Packard (HP), Florida Rock Industries, Inc., (NYSE) and Carolinas Healthcare System. Greg Kroah-Hartman
Greg Kroah-Hartman is a Linux kernel developer. He is the current Linux kernel maintainer for the -stable branch with Chris Wright, the staging subsystem,USB, driver core, debugfs, kref, kobject, and the sysfs kernel subsystems,Userspace I/O (with Hans J. Koch) and TTY layer. He is also the maintainer of the linux-hotplug and created the udev projects. Additionally, he helps to maintain the Gentoo Linux packages for these programs, and helps with the kernel package. He worked for Novell in the SUSE Labs division and, as of February 1st, 2012, works at the Linux Foundation. He is currently working full time on the Linux Driver Project.
He is a co-author of "Linux Device Drivers, 3rd Edition" and author of "Linux Kernel in a Nutshell", and used to be a contributing editor for Linux Journal. He also contributes articles to LWN.net, the news computing site.
Kroah-Hartman frequently helps in the documentation of the kernel and driver development through talks and tutorials. In 2006, he released a CD image of material to introduce a programmer to working on Linux device driver development.

Ian Murdock
Ian Murdock (born April 28, 1973) is the founder of the Debian distribution and Progeny Linux Systems, a commercial Linux company.
Ian Ashley Murdock was born in Konstanz, Germany on April 28, 1973. He wrote the Debian Manifesto in 1993 while a student at Purdue University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in computer science in 1996. He named Debian after his then-girlfriend Debra Lynn, and himself (Deb and Ian). On joining Sun, he led Project Indiana, which he described as "taking the lesson that Linux has brought to the operating system and providing that for Solaris", making a full OpenSolaris distribution with GNOME and userland tools from GNU plus a network-based package management system. From March 2007 to February 2010, he was Vice President of Emerging Platforms at Sun, until the company merged with Oracle and he resigned his position with the company.
Murdock is currently Vice President of Platform and Developer Community at ExactTarget, based in Indianapolis.

John A. Young
John A. Young (born April 24, 1932) is an American business executive. He was chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard from 1978 to 1992. He also formerly served as a director of Wells Fargo & Company.
Young was born in 1932 in Nampa, Idaho. He received his BS degree in electrical engineering in 1953 from Oregon State University, later receiving an MBA degree from Stanford University. Young served in the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant from 1954 to 1956.
In 1958 he joined Hewlett-Packard, rising to the post of vice president in 1968. He was elected executive vice president and a director in 1974. Young succeeded William Hewlett as president of Hewlett-Packard in 1977, receiving the titles of chief operating officer in 1977 and chief executive officer in 1978.
He was elected a director of Chevron in 1985. Upon the merger with Texaco in 2000, he became a director of Chevron Texaco, serving until 2003.
Having had a long association with competitiveness issues, he chaired President Reagan's Commission on Industrial Competitiveness and in 1986 founded the Council on Competitiveness, serving as chairman until 1990. Young served on President Clinton's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology from 1993 to 2000.

Lawrence Babbio, Jr.
Lawrence T. Babbio, Jr., generally called Larry, is a former vice chairman and president of Verizon, with responsibility for the Verizon Telecom and Verizon Business units. He was also a member of the board of directors of Verizon Wireless. Since 2007, Babbio has been a senior adviser to Warburg Pincus, a private equity firm.
Babbio began his communications career in 1966 with New Jersey Bell Telephone. He served in a variety of positions in engineering, network construction, and technology development with New Jersey Bell and AT&T. In January 1995 he was elected vice chairman of Bell Atlantic Corporation.
Prior to the Bell Atlantic/GTE merger, Babbio was president and chief operating officer for Bell Atlantic. He shared oversight of, and responsibility for, all of the corporation's business operations, restructuring of the business units, the GTE merger process, and developing new growth opportunities.
Babbio also served as chairman of the company's Global Wireless Group, one of the largest wireless operations worldwide. He was the lead executive in charge of developing Bell Atlantic's domestic and international wireless communications strategy. Under his leadership, Bell Atlantic substantially increased the size and scope of its domestic and international wireless holdings.

Lewis E. Platt
Lewis E. Platt (April 11, 1941 – September 8, 2005), commonly known as Lew Platt, was an American businessman and corporate director, who was chairman, president and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard.
Platt earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University in 1964 and his MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. He was granted an honorary doctorate in Engineering Science by Santa Clara University. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega National Fraternity and served on its National Foundation Board of Governors.
Platt was widowed early in his career when his first wife died, and left with two young daughters to raise. This was said to have led to the progressive values he exhibited later as chief executive of Hewlett-Packard.
Platt joined Hewlett-Packard (HP) as an engineer in the medical products division. In the 1980s, he rose through the ranks in HP's Computer Systems Organization (CSO), becoming executive vice president overseeing HP's Computer Products Sector in 1988, and head of the CSO in 1990. Under Platt's watch, HP made a major investment in RISC/Unix which brought tens of billions in revenue and make the company a major IT provider.

Linus Torvalds
Linus Benedict Torvalds (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈliːn.ɵs ˈtuːr.valds] (
listen); born December 28, 1969 in Helsinki, Finland) is a Finnish Americansoftware engineer and hacker, best known for having initiated the development of the open source Linux kernel. He later became the chief architect of the Linux kernel, and now acts as the project's coordinator. He also created the revision control system Git. He was honored (shared with Dr Shinya Yamanaka) with the 2012 Millennium Technology Prize by the Technology Academy Finland "in recognition of his creation of a new open source operating system for computers leading to the widely used Linux kernel".
Torvalds was born in Helsinki, Finland. He is the son of journalists Anna and Nils Torvalds, and the grandson of poet Ole Torvalds. Both of his parents were campus radicals at the University of Helsinki in the 1960s. His family belongs to the Swedish-speaking minority (5.5% of Finland's population). Torvalds was named after Linus Pauling, the American Nobel Prize-winning chemist, although in the book Rebel Code: Linux and the Open Source Revolution, Torvalds is quoted as saying, "I think I was named equally for Linus the Peanuts cartoon character", noting that this makes him half "Nobel-prize-winning chemist" and half "blanket-carrying cartoon character".

Marc Andreessen
Marc Lowell Andreessen (
/ænˈdriːsɨn/ an-DREE-sən; born July 9, 1971) is an American entrepreneur, venture capitalist, software engineer, and multi-millionaire best known as co-author of Mosaic, the first widely-used web browser, and co-founder of Netscape Communications Corporation. He founded and later sold the software company Opsware to Hewlett-Packard. He is also a co-founder of Ning, a company that provides a platform for social-networking websites. He sits on the board of directors of Facebook, eBay, and HP, among others. Andreessen is a frequent keynote speaker and guest at Silicon Valley conferences. He is one of only six inductees in the World Wide Web Hall of Fame announced at the first international conference on the World Wide Web in 1994.
Andreessen was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and raised in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, the son of Patricia and Lowell Andreessen, who worked for a seed company. He received his bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As an undergraduate, he interned one summer at IBM in Austin, Texas, United States. He also worked at the university's National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), where he became familiar with Tim Berners-Lee's open standards for the World Wide Web. Mark Hurd
Mark Vincent Hurd (born January 1, 1957) is co-president, director, and board member of Oracle Corporation, and the past chairman, chief executive officer, and president of Hewlett-Packard. At Hewlett-Packard, Hurd succeeded CFO Robert Wayman, who served as interim CEO from February 10, 2005 to March 28, 2005, after former CEO Carly Fiorina was forced by the board to resign. On September 22, 2006, Hurd succeeded Pat Dunn as chairman after she resigned after the pretexting controversy. Hurd resigned his positions at HP on August 6, 2010, after an internal investigation uncovered expense-account irregularities.
Hurd graduated in 1979 with a BBA (Bachelor's degree in Business Administration) from Baylor University, which he attended on a tennis scholarship.
Hurd spent 25 years at NCR Corporation, culminating in a two-year tenure as chief executive officer and president. His leadership was marked by successful efforts to improve operating efficiency, bolster the product line and build strong leadership. In the fiscal year of 2004, NCR generated revenue of $6.0 billion, up 7 percent from a year earlier, and net income rose nearly fivefold to $290 million. He was named president of NCR in 2001 and was given additional responsibilities as chief operating officer in 2002. He began working for NCR as a junior salesman in San Antonio in 1980, and subsequently held a variety of positions in general management, operations, and sales and marketing. He also served as head of the company's Teradata data-warehousing division for three years.

Margaret Cushing "Meg" Whitman (born August 4, 1956) is an American business executive. She is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Hewlett-Packard. A native of Long Island, New York, she is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School. Whitman served as an executive in The Walt Disney Company where she was vice president of strategic planning throughout the 1980s. In February 2009, Whitman announced her candidacy for Governor of California, becoming the third woman in a twenty year period to run for the office. She won the Republican primary in June 2010. The fourth wealthiest woman in the state of California with a net worth of $1.3 billion in 2010, she spent more of her own money on the race than any other political candidate spent on a single election in American history, spending $144 million total of her own fortune and $178.5 million including donors. Whitman lost to Jerry Brown in the November 2 election.

NonStop
NonStop can refer to the line of HP Integrity NonStop computers, the line of Tandem NonStop computers that preceded them, or the NonStop OS operating system that is designed for them. NonStop systems are based on an integrated hardware/software stack. They are self-healing systems designed with redundant components and automatic reconfiguration in the event of a component failure, to prevent against "single-point failures" (see Reliability engineering). The systems run the NonStop OS operating system and the database management systems NonStop SQL and Enscribe.
These systems are often used by banks, stock exchanges, telecommunication providers and other enterprises requiring very reliable computer systems.
Originally introduced in 1976 by Tandem Computers Inc., the line was later owned by Compaq (from 1997) and Hewlett-Packard (since 2003). In 2005, the current product line of HP Integrity NonStop servers, based on Intel Itanium microprocessors, was introduced.
Early NonStop applications had to be specially coded to be fault-tolerant. That obstacle was removed in 1983 with the introduction of the Transaction Monitoring Facility (TMF), which handles the various aspects of fault tolerance on the system level, transparent to the application.

After "cutting costs and focusing on sales of wireless equipment, Russo was credited with returning Lucent to profitability in 2004, after three years of red ink."

Patrick Volkerding
Patrick Volkerding (born October 20, 1966) is the founder and maintainer of the Slackware Linux distribution. He is the "Slackware Benevolent Dictator for Life." Volkerding earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1993.
For a short while, Chris Lumens and others assisted with his work on Slackware. Due to the lack of a continuing revenue stream following the sale of his publisher, Walnut Creek CDROM, to BSDi (which was ultimately sold to Wind River Systems), these people had to be let go. For the last several years Patrick Volkerding has managed Slackware with the help of many volunteers and testers. Volkerding brings out new releases of Slackware roughly once a year.
Volkerding is a SubGenius affiliate/member. The use of the word Slack in "Slackware" is a homage to J. R. "Bob" Dobbs: "I'll admit that it was SubGenius inspired. In fact, back in the 2.0 through 3.0 days we used to print a dobbshead on each CD."
Volkerding is an avid homebrewer and beer lover. Early versions of Slackware would entreat users to send him a bottle of local beer in appreciation for his work.

Richard Stallman
Richard Matthew Stallman (born 16 March 1953), often shortened to rms, is an American software freedom activist and computer programmer. In September 1983, he launched the GNU Project to create a free Unix-like operating system, and he has been the project's lead architect and organizer. Joseph Rodney "Rod" Canion (born January 19, 1945) is an American computer scientist and businessman. Canion is a co-founder of Compaq Computer Corporation where he served as its first President and CEO.
A native of Houston, Canion graduated from the University of Houston in 1966 and 1968 with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in electrical engineering with an emphasis on computer science. In 1991, Canion was dismissed by Compaq's chairman, Benjamin M. Rosen.
In 1992, Canion founded Insource Technology Group with Ronald L. Fischer and served as its chairman until September 2006. In 1999, he led the initial investment round for Questia Media, Inc., which provides an online research library. He became chairman of the board and later helped the company raise $150 million. He is a member of the Board of Directors of AMVESCAP, BlueArc, and Young Life, and HealthLink, is Director Emeritus of the Houston Technology Center, and is a member of the Board of Advisors for Sternhill Partners.

Theodore Y. "Ted" Ts'o (born 1968) is a software developer mainly known for his contributions to the Linux kernel, in particular his contributions to file systems.
He is the primary developer and maintainer of e2fsprogs, the userspace utilities for the ext2 and ext3 filesystems, and is a maintainer for the ext4 file system.
He graduated in 1990 from MIT with a degree in computer science. After MIT IS he went to work for VA Linux Systems for two years. Starting December 2001, he was employed by IBM, working to improve the performance and scalability of the Linux kernel. In December 2007, he went to work for the Linux Foundation.
Ts'o initially served as Chief Platform Strategist at the foundation. In December 2008, he was appointed to Chief Technology Officer of the organization. Ts'o replaced Markus Rex, who has returned to Novell.

Vyomesh "VJ" Joshi (born: c.1954) was the executive vice president of Hewlett-Packard Company's Imaging and Printing Group. He also serves as the executive sponsor for all HP operations and initiatives in India and is a member of HP’s Executive Council.
Joshi holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from Ohio State University.

After Ann Livermore stepped down as HP's enterprise chief in 2011, Joshi was the last remaining top HP executive to have ties to the HP's Bill and Dave era. Joshi has earned is respect as an executive throughout the industry and had long been considered a superstar executive.
Joshi also served as Chairman of Phogenix Imaging LLC, a joint venture between HP and Kodak, from 2000 until May 2003, when Phogenix was dissolved. Joshi has been a member of the Yahoo! board of directors since 2005. However, he retired from Yahoo's board in February 2012, after serving for 7 years.

Seven days worth of using Google's software on the ill-fated tablet have left me with a few observations to share. HP webOS is a mobile operating system based on a Linux kernel, initially developed by Palm, which was later acquired by Hewlett-Packard.[2] The official name is webOS, uncapitalised,[3] but WebOS is also used.[note 1]
WebOS was introduced by Palm in January 2009. Various versions of webOS have been featured on several devices, including Pre, Pixi, and Veer phones and the HP TouchPad tablet.

WebOS was introduced by Palm in January 2009 as the successor to Palm OS. The first webOS device was the original Palm Pre, released on Sprint in June 2009. The Palm Pixi followed. Upgraded "Plus" versions of both Pre and Pixi were released on Verizon and AT&T.
In April 2010, HP acquired Palm; webOS was described as a key asset and motivation for the purchase. The $1.2 billion acquisition finalized in June. HP indicated its intention to develop the webOS platform for use in multiple new products, including smartphones, tablet computers and printers.[4]
In February, 2011, HP announced that it would use webOS as the universal platform for all its devices.[5] However, HP also made the decision[6] that the Palm Pre, Palm Pixi, and the "Plus" revisions would not receive over-the-air updates to webOS 2.0,[7] despite a previous commitment to an upgrade "in coming months."[8] HP announced several new webOS devices, including the HP Veer and HP Pre 3 smartphones, running webOS 2.2, and the HP TouchPad, a tablet computer released in July 2011 that runs webOS 3.0.
In March 2011, HP announced plans for a version of webOS by the end of 2011 to run within Windows,[9] and to be installed on all HP desktop and notebook computers in 2012.[10]
In August 2011, HP announced that it was interested in selling its Personal Systems Group, responsible for all of its consumer PC products, including webOS, and that webOS device development and production lines will be halted.[11][12][13] It was unclear whether HP would consider licensing of webOS software to other manufacturers. When HP reduced the price of the Touchpad to $99, the existing inventory quickly sold out.[14] HP is reported as still wanting to rollout webOS on PCs and printers, but a date is unknown.[15] The HP Pre 3 will be launched in select areas.[15] HP has announced that it will continue to issue updates for the Veer and HP TouchPad.[15]
In December 2011, HP announced it would release webOS source code in the near future under an open-source license. [16]

Interface[link]
WebOS uses multi-touch gestures to navigate on the touchscreen. The interface uses "cards" to manage multitasking and represent apps. The user switches between running applications by a flicking gesture from left and right on the screen. Applications are closed by flicking a "card" up—and "off"—the screen. The application "cards" can be rearranged for organization and in webOS 2.0+, Stacks are introduced, where related cards can be "stacked" together.

WebOS integrates information from many sources. Users can sign in to multiple email accounts from different providers and integrate all of these sources into a single list. Similar capabilities pull together calendars and also instant messages and SMS text messages from multiple sources. [18]

WebOS features an unobtrusive notification area located on the bottom portion of the screen on phones, and on the top status bar area on tablets.
On phones, when a notification comes in, it slides in from the bottom of the screen. Due to the resizable nature of the Mojo and Enyo application frameworks, the app usually resizes itself to allow unhindered use while the notification is displayed. After the notification slides away, it usually remains as an icon. The user can then tap on the icons to expand them. Notifications can then be dismissed (sliding off the screen), acted upon (tapping), or left alone.

WebOS uses a cloud-based approach rather than using a desktop sync client, but various third-party sync clients are available.[citation needed] The first version of webOS shipped with the ability to sync with Apple's iTunes software by masquerading as an Apple device, but this feature was disabled by subsequent software updates from Apple.
Third-party applications[link]
Officially vetted third-party applications are accessible from the device for wireless download by using the App Catalog.[19]
Another source of applications is known as Homebrew.[20][21] Homebrew is not directly supported by HP.
WebOS was a new platform, replacing Palm OS, so Palm commissioned MotionApps to code and develop an emulator called Classic, to enable backward compatibility to Palm OS applications. This operates with webOS version 1. PalmOS emulation was discontinued in webOS version 2.0.[22] MotionApps disengaged from Classic in 2010, citing HP Palm as "disruptive".[23]

Underneath the graphical user interface, webOS has much in common with mainstream Linux distributions. Versions 1.0 to 2.1 use a patched Linux 2.6.24 kernel.[70]
The list of open-source components used by the different releases of webOS, as well as the source code of and patches applied to each component, is available at the Palm Open Source web page.[70] This page also serves as a reference listing of the versions of webOS that have been publicly released.
In 2011, Enyo replaced Mojo, released in June 2009, as the software development kit (SDK).[71] In December 2011, HP announced that Enyo will be contributed to the open-source community, along with webOS in the "near future".

HP provides resources for webOS developers[72] and instructions for enrolling in the HP Palm Developer Program.[73]
The latest version of the webOS SDK is version 3.0.5. It can be downloaded directly from HP Palm's development center. With this SDK, developers are able to make applications for a variety of webOS devices including the HP Veer and the HP Touchpad. Included in the SDK is also the PDK, which grants developers access to compilers, coding libraries, scripts, utilities, and documents that aid in C/C++ development. Applications can also be written in HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS using either the Mojo or Enyo framework.
The webOS Development Center also has quick start guides that help ease the transition from iOS, web, and C/C++ development.
HP App Catalog[link]
The HP App Catalog is an online marketplace for applications for the Palm mobile devices running webOS. It is similar to Apple's App Store for iOS, Windows Phone's Marketplace,Google's Google Play for Android, and Nokia's Ovi Store for Nokia devices.
