6. Marginal Rate of Substitution and Marginal Utility
In this video, I explain the concepts of Marginal Rate of Substitution (MRS) and Marginal Utility. I then offer a non-calculus-based motivation for the formula that relates the MRS to the marginal utilities of the two goods. 9b. Cobb-Douglas Utility and Demand
This video introduces the Cobb-Douglas utility function for two goods and demonstrates some of its properties. I demonstrate how to compute marginal rate of substitution for Cobb Douglas utility. I use the resulting expression to show why Cobb Douglas indifference curves have constant slope along rays out of the origin. I also demonstrate how to solve for consumer demand using the Cobb-Douglas utility function. After deriving Cobb-Douglas demand, I show that the alpha share parameter in Cobb-Douglas utility functions actually represents the consumer's expenditure share on that good. This video uses calculus to compute MRS, but after that, the rest is just algebra. If you are a viewer who doesn't know calculus, you can take me at my word, skip the computation of MRS, and the rest of the video can still be worthwhile. This video is a part of my series of video tutorials on introduction-to-intermediate microeconomics. This video is more intermediate than introduction, but if you would like to read about my motivation for the project and see links to my other videos, check out my video website: blog.thisyoungeconomist.com

Smart Grid, Utilities, and Internet Protocols
Google Tech Talk April 14, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Erich W. Gunther. The smart grid is a big topic these days, but before there was a smart grid newspaper headline, the utilities have been experimenting with TCP/IP in the backend networks for a while now. Erich Gunther of enernex (www.enernex.com) will present a reference model and concept of network operations for the power industry including how Internet Protocols fit in that space. Along the way he will touch on what has worked, what hasn't and some of the security issues along the way. Erich W. Gunther is the co-founder, chairman and chief technology officer for EnerNex Corporation - an electric power research, engineering, and consulting firm - located in Knoxville Tennessee. With 30 years of experience in the electric power industry, Erich is no stranger to smart grid - he has been involved in defining what smart grid is before the term itself was coined.

Timelapse Montage
A montage of my timelapse shots through the summer of 2010.
The dolly moves were done using two custom track and dolly systems that I engineered, utilizing off the shelf components with a bit of custom fabrication. My primary system consists of a set of Mumford rotary tables with a Time Machine for the motion control programming. The secondary system consisted of a lower tech servo city DC motor.

"The Last 3 Minutes" Directed by Po Chan
The main character in this short is William Turner, a janitor whose life seems mundane on the surface but as it develops, many interesting layers are revealed. We shot his boring existence in the present day at 24fps utilizing the new Canon 5D firmware.
As William's life unfolds from present day to the past, we shot with the Canon 5D at 30fps and pulled it in at 24fps to give it a slightly dreamy feel. The creamy Canon 'L' series glass delivered the period look that we were hoping to achieve.

Lundberg Loses It
Hello. The idea behind this shortflick was to give the viewer some surreal insight into the mind of professional downhill sk8ter Erik Lundberg. He starts his day by waking up in Encinitas California. After a nutritious breakfast he begins a journey on his bike in search of a sick hill where he can be free and lose himself by sk8ting it before the sun sets. While biking to this hill he daydreams about the time he lost his balance at 70mph from a crack in the road in Brazil, along with losing the final race to Mischo Erban in the US Nationals.
Shot in monochrome and with appearances by Jeff Budro, Evren Ozan, Mischo Erban & various IGSA riders, "Lundberg Loses It" is a story about a skater with a goal. His goal is to utilize the multiple ways he's lost it and apply those lessons to skating this hill the best that he can.
But can he lose himself before the sun sets?
This shortflick is dedicated to all the shredders of the past, present, and future. Enjoy the show.

Protect Yourself From Digital Utility Meters
Do not sucker for costly "Opt-Out" programs. IT'S EXTORTION! Utility companies have blind-sided their customers with digital meters that are harmful, dangerous, invasive and unlawful. Here are some ways for utility customers to protect themselves. More solutions are available at freedomtaker (d'o't'c'o'm) If you expect to post comments here about how great it is that the power companies are radiating and conducting surveillance on private properties without disclosure and consent, expect your comments to be removed. This is not censorship, it is responsible management of false information. You can always post that on your own page.

KA-BAR Fighting/Utility Knife review: Modern Incarnation of a Legend
A look at the KA-BAR Model 5011 Fighting/Utility Knife. This version of the classic KA-BAR knife has a 7 inch straight edge blade made from 1095 Cro-Van steel. This is a modernised version so rather then the traditional leather handle material, Kraton G is used. Likewise the leather sheath has been replaced with a modern Glass Filled Nylon sheath which offers very good retention and is ambitdextrous. Both handle and sheath are Foliage Green in colour. Desert and Black are the other colours available in this line. You can also have a partially serrated edge on these blades. KA-BAR produces these knives in a multitute of versions. There are the full size model such as this with the 7" blade, the "Short KA-BAR" with a 5 1/4" blade, plain edge and parrially serrated blades, GFN sheaths, leather sheaths, leather handles, and a range of commemorative models. The KA-BAR is a true legend, I don't think any collection is complete without at least one of these great knives. They are a well finished, quality product and have that indefinable sense of history built in. Value on these is amazing, they are a very affordable knife and are a great example of "high value."
