MELANESIA - VANUATU
Vanuatu is a Melanesian archipelago in the Pacific ocean. Port of call is Vila, 2010. The Ni-Vans, short for Ni-Vanuatu (people of Vanuatu) speak an English pigeon lingua franca named WANTOK. This contact language started out as a language of trade comparable to the (Pasar) Malay language in Indonesia. The Ni-Vans nation is composed of 150 different tribes over 80 islands, which all have their own distinguished languages. The Ni-Van do not understand eachothers languages. The Ni-Van celebrate their culture(s) which is enjoying a revival brought on by (mostly Australian) tourism entering the region. However most of the cultural activity is still strongly rooted in their Adat, which they call Kastom.

(02)Victory at Sea: "Melanesian Nightmare" 2 of 3
Episode # 13. With the early successes of Pearl Harbor, Singapore, the Philippines and the many other island takeovers, the Japanese next wanted to conquer Australia and thus would have virtual total control of the Pacific Ocean. The island of New Guinea and the port of Port Moresby stood in their path. The Japanese navy landed troops on the northern shore from the Bismarck Sea and the Japanese army would have to trek across the Owen Stanley Mountains to have success and hopefully a surprise attack would force the allies from the island. The allies led by the Australians and the Americans had other ideas and stopped the Japanese only 30 miles from the southern port city. Thus ended any hopes for the Japanese Empire to incorporate the island nation of Australia. The allies would in fact go on their own island hopping campaign forcing the Japanese back to Tokyo and ultimate allied victory. Defending Melanesian Land
In June 2009 Melanesian activists (from Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands) met in Madang (Papua New Guinea) to discuss the defence of indigenous land. At this meeting they created the Melanesian Indigenous Land Defence Alliance. In this short documentary they explain why customary land is so important and why MILDA was formed to defend it.

Land-Divers of Melanesia - PREVIEW
Purchase: www.der.org On the island of Pentecost in the New Hebrides archipelago, a few hundred Melanesians maintain a traditional life thanks to their geographic isolation and to the leaders who have resisted Christianity, schools and cooperatives. Bunlap, where this film was shot, is the largest and most important community of these people. To ensure a good yam crop, men of Pentecost Island in Melanesia attach vines to their ankles and dive headlong from a wooden tower over 100 feet tall, a ritual referred to as Naghol or land-diving. Those who dive say the fall clears their mind. The vines are relatively elastic and the ground is softened so injury is rare. For Pentecost Islanders the annual dive takes an appropriate place among other rituals and ceremonies such as blessing the taro crop, circumcising young boys and feasting with relatives, all of which keep them in touch with the forces that control the world in which they live. Today this ritual has become a tourist attraction for many Westerners, much to the chagrin of anthropologists, and package land diving tours can be arranged throughout the yam harvest season. a film by Kal Muller in collaboration with Robert Gardner for The Film Study Center at Harvard University distributed by Documentary Educational Resources
