the Stone Lock Arts of Kaifeng's Eastern Grand Mosque
Short documentary on the Shí Suǒ (Stone Lock) skills preserved by a group of Hui men at Kaifeng's Eastern Grand Mosque. The stone lock is a traditional strength building tool in the Chinese martial arts, however the use of the stone lock could be considered an art in it's self. This tool once considered indispensable by Chinese boxers and wrestlers is now being forgotten and many of the techniques of the stone lock are being lost. However there are still a few small dedicated groups of people who preserve this art. One of the main places this art is still found is among the Hui (Chinese Muslim) People. Despite (or because of) the oppression the Hui have experienced through their history they have become known for their skill in grappling, martial arts, and the strength of their men. There has also been a long history of military service among the Hui and for a Hui man with no high ranking social contacts the only way to progress through the ranks was through the Imperial Military Exams. These exams required a high level of martial skill, as well as great strength and the ability to lift massive stone weights and heavy weapons. The group of Hui men featured here meet at Kaifeng's Dong Da Qing Zhen Shi (Eastern Grand Mosque).

河南开封郑氏花样石锁部分技法Stone Lock Training Methods from Kaifeng,Henan
The Stone Lock(石锁Shi Sou) is an age old strength exercises which was very popular among Chinese Martial Artists. Today it seems to be mostly practiced by Shuai Jiao Practitioners and the Hui People(回族). The Hui are a Ethnic Minority who are Muslims. Popular Chinese Martial Arts practiced by them are the Cha Quan, Baji Quan, Xinyiliuhe Quan and the Pigua Quan. Some might see a connection between the Stone Lock and todays Kettlebells, but to draw a direct connection seems not possible through resources. By looking at them they seem also similar to me. So maybe the stone lock is the Ancestor of the Kettlebell or the maybe are paralell invenstions.(Does have anyone different infos on that? ). I also read the other Ancient countries like the Greeks had similar training tools. It seems also not clear when the Stone Lock orginated in China.I read sources that say it was invented during Han Dynasty, or others even saying that it was already their in Xia Dynasty. Others spoke about orginating in Mongolia. This Demonstration is from Kaifeng in Henan. This is the Capital City of Henan Province. If anyone has further knowledge on this subject I would be pleased if you share. Thank you.

Travel in Kaifeng
Located in Henan Province at the very heartland of China, Kaifeng is noted for having been the capitals of seven ancient dynasties. The city is loaded with ancient relics and folklores that can seem almost intimidating to first-time visitors. On the other hand, it is also a great interactive classroom for a dose of Chinese history.
