Evacuated Tube Transport could take you around the world in just 6 hours
Evacuated Tube Transport is an airless, frictionless, maglev-like form of transportation which is safer, cheaper and quieter than trains or airplanes. Six-person capsules travel in the tubes and can reach a maximum speed of 6500 km/h, and provide 50 times more transportation per kwh. A tube can travel from New York to Beijing in two hours, and make a round-the-world trip in just six hours. Sources: ET3.com, Discovery News

Smoking marijuana does not harm lungs: study says
DOWNLOAD HERE: newsdirect.nma.com.tw A US government-funded study has found smoking marijuana regularly for up to seven years does not impair lung function. Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's School of Medicine monitored the lung function of over 5000 young men and women over 20 years between 1985 and 2006, and found that smoking pot for seven 'joint years' - which means 365 joints a year - does not alter lung function. However, experts say this will probably not push forward the legalization of medical marijuana, as the drug poses other health risks. Sources: New York Times, CBS, LA Times, AFP

US military unveils non-lethal heat ray
DOWNLOAD HERE: newsdirect.nma.com.tw The US military unveiled a non-lethal electromagnetic heat ray beam that can deter protesters alike without causing permanent harm. The shooting range is up to a kilometer. Once it hits the target, the 95 Ghz ray only penetrates 1/64 of an inch of the skin so no real damage is done; in contrast the 2.45 Ghz microwave oven waves penetrate much deeper and can cook meat. Goal-line technology may be ready for the next soccer game
The IFAB has approved two goal-line systems, including Hawkeye and GoalRef, to be tested before July 2. Hawkeye is a high-speed camera based system while GoalRef uses magnetic field and a special ball to determine a goal situation. Both systems send a decision signal within a second when the ball crosses the line to the referee to help him aid the judgement. The referee then has the power to make the final call. Sources: SI.com

Florida funeral home to employ body dissolving machine
DOWNLOAD HERE: newsdirect.nma.com.tw A Florida funeral home has taken delivery of a machine billed as a green alternative to cremation. The "Resomator" uses a mixture of water and potassium hydroxide to dissolve bodies. The chamber is then pressurised to around 150 psi and heated to 180C for around three hours while the remains are dissolved. Once finished the liquid can be disposed of in the sewer system, while the bones are crushed in a separate process before being returned to relatives. Metals such as artificial joints are also recovered.

Grow organs on your own stem cell
Dr. Tim Nelson at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota found a new stem cell treatment which regenerates human tissue with new building blocks to heal or replace damaged or diseased tissue. The therapy aims to transplant stem cells, which are taken from the patient's own body, into a damaged heart and grow new heart muscle. Cells can be deposited beforehand, and if the owner has a stroke or heart attack in later life, they will be able to use their own cells to heal the damage. SOURCE: Yahoo News

Flesh-eating necrotizing fasciitis: What is it?
Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but deadly flesh-eating disease that can be caused by many kinds of bacteria. It can be contracted by swallowing or when a wound gives bacteria access to deep tissue. The infection is often not visible in its early stages, but it spreads rapidly, causing muscle, skin and tissue death, sometimes within hours. If not diagnosed quickly, aggressive surgery may be required to remove all affected tissue and surrounding healthy tissue. The mortality rate is at least 60 percent. DOWNLOAD ANIMATION WITH VOICEOVER: newsdirect.nma.com.tw DOWNLOAD ANIMATION ONLY: newsdirect.nma.com.tw An unemployed Utah man is offering himself up to be hunted for $10000. Mork Encino, 28, explains the rules on his website: Hunts are to last 24 hours. If Encino evades capture, he wins the money. If he's killed, the prize goes to his family. If successful, hunters get to retain Encino's body and are welcome to sell his organs. Those taking Encino up on his offer could be prosecuted, depending on state laws.
