Human Heart
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com The heart is a muscular organ found in all animals with a circulatory system (including all vertebrates), that is responsible for pumping blood throughout the blood vessels by repeated, rhythmic contractions. The term cardiac (as in cardiology) means "related to the heart" and comes from the Greek kardia, for "heart." The vertebrate heart is composed of cardiac muscle, which is an involuntary striated muscle tissue found only within this organ. The average human heart, beating at 72 beats per minute, will beat approximately 2.5 billion times during an average 66 year lifespan, and weighs approximately 250 to 300 grams (9 to 11 oz) in females and 300 to 350 grams (11 to 12 oz) in males. In invertebrates that possess a circulatory system, the heart is typically a tube or small sac and pumps fluid that contains water and nutrients such as proteins, fats, and sugars. In insects, the "heart" is often called the dorsal tube and insect "blood" is almost always not oxygenated since they usually respirate (breathe) directly from their body surfaces (internal and external) to air. However, the hearts of some other arthropods (including spiders and crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp) and some other animals pump hemolymph, which contains the copper-based protein hemocyanin as an oxygen transporter similar to the iron-based hemoglobin in red blood cells found in vertebrates

THE MYSTERIOUS HUMAN HEART | PBS
Airs October 15 and 22 at 9 pm (ET) on PBS (check local listings) MYSTERIOUS HUMAN Heart's one-hour episodes focuses on a different aspect of what we thought we knew, what we know now, and what we're on the verge of learning about the heart. Endlessly Beating examines the heart as a muscle - pumping almost 100000 times a day, pushing approximately five quarts of blood in a ceaseless circuit to deliver oxygen to every cell in the human body. The Spark of Life looks at the physiological electrical mechanisms that keep a heart beating regularly and efficiently - and what happens when this most essential rhythm of life goes awry. The Silent Killer focuses on atherosclerosis, the silent blockage of the coronary arteries, which can trigger a devastating and possibly fatal heart attack. As this program shows, the key is to recognize the risk factors that feed the disease and to control them before it's too late. For more information visit www.pbs.org

Basic Gross anatomy of the human heart
Not an IDE4 as such but a short basic lecture on the gross anatomy, function of the Heart This is my own schematic drawing of the heart. 4 chambers 4 valves:: Mitral 2 leaves, Left Atrium to Left Ventricle Tricuspid 3 leaves, Right atrium to Right Ventricle Aortic 3 leaves, Left Ventricle to Aorta Pulmonary 3 leaves, right Ventricle to Pulmonary Artery 4 pulmonary veins transport oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium. Pulmonary artery takes de-oxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs. Note Myocardium Note Apex Note function of the root of the aorta, and attachment of the three coronary arteries. LDA, Circumflex and RCA Some pathology Ischemia, may lead to AMI or perhaps merely angina Hypertrophy (often due to chronic high blood pressure) Infective endocarditis, may cause stroke requires quite aggressive and sustained treatment, consider friable material coming of the valve causing a stroke to the brain. Stenosis (narrowing) of a valve, mitral stenosis may be more common purportedly because it is a 2 leave valve
