Short Documentary - 2007 California Emmy Nominee - Camera/Editing by Carlos Miranda A deeper look into the Kumeyaay tribe on the mexican side of the border while they strive to survive under rudimentary living conditions and dependent on their cultural tradition of basket weaving to supply their financial needs. The story centers around Gloria Castaneda, a kumeyaay native who takes matters on her own hands and organizes her village into creating baskets and finding outlets to display them north of the border, into US territory. Kumeyaay Winter Solstice Double Sunrise 12/23/2011
Friday, 23 December 2011, 6:53 am PST Double sunrise from Kumeyaay Winter Solstice archaeoastronomy observatory site on Cowles Mountain, San Diego, California. The 2011 Winter Solstice occurred at 0530 UTC Thursday, 12/22/2011 (9:30 PM on Wednesday, 12/21/2011 in San Diego). This morning's sunrise at 6:52 AM PST was 33 hours 20 minutes after true solstice. In contrast to yesterday's viewing when the air was calm and the sky very hazy, especially to the southeast, this morning's conditions were cold, clear, and windy as result of Santa Ana winds that arose last night. In fact there was a wind warning advisory from the National Weather Service. In addition to noise and camera wobble from the gusty wind, there was considerable air turbulence, causing the skyline features to jiggle much more than during typical viewing. The large boulders are approximately 17 miles distant. I have now made this trek an annual tradition since the early 90s. I use records of prior year observations to help determine the best places to stand for seeing a symmetric double sunrise as a function of days and hours before or after true solstice, Today I only needed to adjust my position 5 meters south of the solstice viewing turnaround point. Notice how far to the right of the boulder piles the sun appears to move as it rises. That angle contributes to the challenge of identifying a good position for the symmetric view and most attractive doubling. This recording was made with a Nikon D7000 DSLR and ...

La Jolla Man, Kumeyaay, man. The original.
Kumeyaay Man found on La Jolla Cliffs, steps from our class. Over 10000 years old. Why not give it back? Land? Artificats? History? Burial sites and grand villages are found at almost all Univeristy Campuses in California. Of course, the government or others chose the best land to occupy. This usually meant the villagers were displaced and their cultural site ignored. Its ok to see "Old Town" or a famous Church as a protected "Cultural Heritage Site", but why not more native villages? What would that mean to the idea of "ownership" or natural birthrights? Kristi Orosco (San Pasqual Kumeyaay) is an agent of the Rincon EPA and also has been a cultural monitor and cultural leader. She breaks it down for the youth as the archeological marker sits only feet from the cliffs of La Jolla at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, within the zone of multi-million dollar property. There is also a burial site of recent controversy at the UCSD Chancellors house in La Jolla. What does all this mean for the people, culture, and message to humanity? Repatriation can come in many forms and Kristi urged the youth to look into being protectors and advocates of culture.

Cosoy, famous for the first Kumeyaay resistance to colonization and the birthplace of California.
This historic site is of great importance because this is where the Kumeyaay first fought back against the subjugation of New Spain. Secondarily this village was the the birthplace of Historic California. For these reasons we must protect, enshrine, and interpret this ireplaceable corner stone of America.
