TEDxTheEvergreenStateCollege - David Roberts - Climate Change is Simple
David Roberts is staff writer at Grist.org. In "Climate Change is Simple" he describes the causes and effects of climate change in blunt, plain terms. On April 16, 2012, speakers and attendees gathered at TEDxTheEvergreenStateCollege: Hello Climate Change to reflect on the ability -- and responsibility -- of formal and informal education to inspire and empower action in this era of climate change. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Please note: This video was intended for a CQ Roll Call internal meeting and not for marketing purposes. Any appearance or affiliation in this video is not endorsement of CQ Roll Call or any of its products. CQ Roll Call employees knew something was up when video producer Andrew Satter asked them to read lines from various hit songs such as "I'm Just A Girl" and "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay". What they didn't know was that the lines would be cut up into short bites to form the lyrics to the iconic Schoolhouse Rocks song, "I'm Just A Bill." No song better reflects the company's core mission of tracking, analyzing and interpreting the legislative process. The video was shown during a recent corporate meeting. Detroit City Council hearing adjourned amid shouting match
By Suzette Hackney • Detroit Free Press Staff Writer A Detroit City Council special investigative session into a police whistle-blower lawsuit settlement erupted into a yelling match when President Pro Tem Monica Conyers made claims that she was being disrespected. The argument began when Conyers asked an independent attorney who was testifying if the council could be sued by Detroit residents for approving the $8.4-million lawsuit settlement. Councilwoman JoAnn Watson said: "They can sue you; I voted no." Conyers told Watson to stop interrupting and disrespecting her. She added: "We all know how you voted; you don't have to keep repeating it." Moments later, Conyers interrupted Council President Ken Cockrel as he was questioning Carl Edwards, the Detroit attorney. Cockrel reminded Conyers that he had the floor and banged his gavel repeatedly. Conyers railed: "You're not my Daddy. You're not going to disrespect me. Grow up! Control your house and learn how to treat women." Cockrel told Conyers that she was "one to talk." Conyers also made repeated mocking reference to Cockrel as Shrek, the green, grumpy and rotund ogre from the animated film. As the council members yelled at each other, residents attending the hearings yelled, as well. "You're disrespecting the citizens!" and "This is a shame!" Cockrel took a quick recess to regain order before then breaking for lunch.

Wright, a Pulitzer Prize-winning staff writer for The New Yorker, brings exhaustive research and delightful prose to one of the best books yet on the history of terrorism, The Looming Tower. He begins with the observation that, despite an impressive record of terror and assassination, post--WWII, Islamic militants failed to establish theocracies in any Arab country. Many helped Afghanistan resist the Russian invasion of 1979 before their unemployed warriors stepped up efforts at home. Al-Qaeda, formed in Afghanistan in 1988 and led by Osama bin Laden, pursued a different agenda, blaming America for Islam's problems. Less wealthy than believed, bin Laden's talents lay in organization and PR, Wright asserts. Ten years later, bin Laden blew up US embassies in Africa and the destroyer Cole, opening the floodgates of money and recruits. Wright's step-by-step description of these attacks reveals that planning terror is a sloppy business, leaving a trail of clues that, in the case of 9/11, raised many suspicions among individuals in the FBI, CIA and NSA. Wright shows that 9/11 could have been prevented if those agencies had worked together. As a fugitive, bin Ladin's days as a terror mastermind may be past, but his success has spawned swarms of imitators. This is an important, gripping and profoundly disheartening book. This event took place September 14, 2007 at Google Headquarters in Mountain View, CA.

How Political Myths Spread - Farhad Manjoo
Complete video at: fora.tv Salon.com technology columnist Farhad Manjoo examines the phenomenon of "selective exposure" - our predisposition to seek out ideas that re-enforce existing beliefs - in today's media, using the 2004 Presidential election's "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" as an example. ----- Salon.com staff writer Farhad Manjoo talks about his new book, True Enough: Learning To Live in a Post-Fact Society, which contends the Internet promotes belief over fact. Perhaps countering this view is Mike Godwin, formerly counsel for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and now general counsel for the Wikimedia Foundation, and Zo (Connie) Spencer, brilliant, witty, and fearless blogger (www.humorlessbitch.com) on all things political, personal, and involving high-tech. As usual, everyone is invited to participate in the discussion - The Hillside Club Cybersalon Farhad Manjoo is an author and a staff writer for Salon.com. Gary Shilling on How to Invest in the Age of Deleveraging and Deflation, Part II
www.minyanville.com Dr. Gary Shilling continues his talk with Minyanville's Josh Lipton on how to invest in the stock market during a period of slow economic growth and deflation. While many investors fear a rapid rise in inflation, Shilling, an award-winning economic forecaster, tells Lipton that the global economy is going through a long period of deleveraging and weak growth -- which makes deflation far more likely and a far greater threat to investors than inflation. Shilling, the author of The Age of Deleveraging: Investment Strategies for a Decade of Slow Growth and Deflation, explains in clear terms why the United States and world economy will struggle for several more years and what you can do to protect and grow your wealth in the difficult times ahead. You can read part 1 of Lipton's interview with Shilling at www.minyanville.com businessmarkets/articles/gary-shilling-shilling-deleveraging-deflation-josh/11/15/2010/id/31129 and you can read part 2 at www.minyanville.com shilling-deleveraging-deflation/11/15/2010/id/31130 . Pearl Jam Twenty
Pearl Jam Twenty chronicles the years leading up to the band’s formation, the chaos that ensued soon-after their rise to megastardom, their step back from center stage, and the creation of a trusted circle that would surround them—giving way to a work culture that would sustain them. Told in big themes and bold colors with blistering sound, the film is carved from over 1,200 hours of rarely-seen and never-before seen footage spanning the band’s career. Pearl Jam Twenty is the definitive portrait of Pearl Jam: part concert film, part intimate insider-hang, part testimonial to the power of music and uncompromising artists.

53rd Journalism Awards Gala (part 1)
A. JOURNALISTS OF THE YEAR
A1. PRINT (Over 50,000 circulations)
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly
Comments: "Range" is an appropriate middle name. What incredibly
detailed reporting on a variety of complicated topics. What an ability to
make us feel as if we know the players. What skill in explaining messy
situations. The very essence of solid journalism.
2nd place: David Evans, Bloomberg Markets, "Duping the Families of
Fallen Soldiers"
HM: Mariel Garza, Los Angeles Daily News Editorials
A2. PRINT (Under 50,000 circulation)
Radley Balko, Reason Magazine
Comment: ―Radley Balko is one of those throw-back journalists that
understands the power of groundbreaking reporting and how to make a
significant impact through his work. Time and time again, his stories cause
readers to stop, think, and most significantly, take action.
Congratulations!‖
2nd Place: Dan Evans, Glendale News-Press
HM: Ryan Vaillancourt, Los Angeles Downtown News
A3. TELEVISION JOURNALIST
Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun, KNBC-TV
Garcia and Mamoun shoot, write and edit compelling stories. One of
their strengths as a team is the obvious respect for their subjects, and the
ability through contacts in the community to land exclusive interviews and
opportunities. They are strong storytellers and the pieces move!
2nd Place: Antonio Valverde, Univision
Valverde has a wide range as a journalist. He is able to work with various
segments of the community to tell compelling stories. He has political
acumen and can accurately and fairly tell stories, while also reaching out
to the disenfranchised to share their stories of life in L.A.
A4. RADIO JOURNALIST
Susan Valot, KPCC
Comments: Well-rounded reports with authoritative, informed tone. Great
use of sound. Valot‘s work is some of the best we‘ve heard.
2nd Place: Brian Watt: KPCC
HM: Kitty Felde: KPCC
A5. ONLINE JOURNALIST

HM: Robert Scheer, Truthdig.com
A6. SPORTS JOURNALIST

A7. ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
Kim Masters, KCRW-FM Radio
Comments: Nice voice in both senses of the word, along with substantive
content. Covering a story about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, she
tracked down Plame to comment on her portrayal, rather than just talking
to the actress. She also gave a lot of information on entertainment agents
that broadened the picture the public was likely to have of that
occupation.
2nd Place: Tara Wallis-Finestone, NBC LA
HM: George Pennacchio, KABC-TV

B1. HARD NEWS
Tracy Manzer and Sarah Peters, Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Heroes foil
bank heist"
Comments: The writing was appropriately-paced for the category and
the story content. I enjoyed the writers' use of sensory details and factual
information, presented with a slightly humorous/sarcastic tone that made
this piece fun to read.
B2. NEWS FEATURE
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly, ―The Parent Trigger‖.
Comments: Documents a groundswell of democracy while explaining a
new law through a real-world prism. Powerful. Incredibly well-sourced and
informative, yet provides a human touch. The story of poor minorities trying
to make a change documented how the masses can move the
establishment. Inspiring to others, this story shows what newspaper do like
no other. Bravo.
2nd Place: Thomas Curven, Los Angeles Times, ―Walking Away from Grief‖
HM: Kristopher Hanson, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Dangers Close to

Portrait of a Long Beach Lobbyist‖
B4. INVESTIGATIVE/SERIES
David Evans, Bloomberg News, "Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash
Payout as Insurers Profit"
Comments: These articles are the soul of great investigative journalism,
uncovering a shocking system whereby the families of slain soldiers are
tricked about benefits, and where shameless insurance companies reap
big profits at the expense of those families.
Best of all, it led to immediate Congressional investigations and action.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "The Dance of the Lemons"
HM: Monica Alonzo and Simone Wilson, LA Weekly, "Culture of Cruelty"
B5. BUSINESS
Alana Semuels, Los Angeles Times, "California unfriendly to business?

Comments: This is an authoritative and well-documented piece that
refutes the common wisdom of California's tax structure being unfriendly
to business.

It’s not everyday that we get a green light from one of our couples to turn their wedding video into a mini action film of some sort. But yes, Ayong and Isabella did just that! Trying out this different approach for the very first time was quite daunting. But we’re so glad Ayong and Isabella we’re all game for the crazy ideas we managed to come up with. Don’t worry though, we made sure the blood and gore were downplayed to a minimum so their guests can still enjoy the food…along with the show! Cheers to first kisses, first dances and first attempts!

Joss Whedon Writer/Director Joss Whedon is one of the most prolific figures in television, but it wasnt always that way. He started his career as a staff writer for the sitcom, Rosanne. From there he moved onto feature films, where he worked for several years as a script doctor, on films such as Speed and Toy Story. Tired of seeing his visions rewritten, Whedon eventually returned to television, bringing with him an adaptation of his first feature film, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In this candid interview, Joss talks openly about the early days of his career, his showbiz family, his legion of fans, and the trials and tribulations of taking a cult TV hit to the big screen.

Has Malcolm Gladwell's Opinion on Social Media and the Arab Spring Changed?
92yamericanconversation.org | The New Yorker writer and author Malcolm Gladwell made headlines around the Internet when his essay "Small Change Why the revolution will not be tweeted" was published in October 2010. He argued that Internet activism diminishes in-the-streets activism. Many technology writers respectfully disagreed. He revisits the topic in this video with Ariel Levy, also a staff writer for The New Yorker. Do you think he's right?
