Kei Nishikori (錦織 圭, Nishikori Kei^?) (born 29 December 1989 in Matsue, Shimane, Japan) is a Japanese tennis player, currently ranked World No. 17 as of April 2, 2012. He began playing tennis at the age of five and qualified for his first ATP main draw event at the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles, California at the age of 17.^{[citation needed]}

Junior career[link]

Nishikori won the 2004 title at the Riad 21 Tournament in Rabat, Morocco and was a quarterfinalist at the 2006 Junior French Open. He partnered with Emiliano Massa to win the 2006 Junior French Open. Nishikori won the 2007 Luxilon Cup held at the 2007 Sony Ericsson Open by defeating Michael McClune.

Nishikori qualified and won the title at the ITF Futures event in Mazatlán, Mexico. He began the year by receiving a wildcard to the Kyoto Challenger in Kyoto, Japan.

A finalist in two USTA Pro Circuit events, Nishikori lost to Donald Young in Little Rock, Arkansas and Alex Bogomolov, Jr. in Carson, California. He partnered with Donald Young to win the doubles title at Little Rock. He paired with triple-French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, Florida, where they lost in the first round. Nishikori served as a hitting partner for Roger Federer at Wimbledon.

After his ATP main draw debut in Los Angeles, he qualified for the Indianapolis Tennis Championships in July 2007. He beat Alejandro Falla in the first round, 6–4, 6–3, to record his first ATP main-draw win. He followed that up with a three-set win over Michael Berrer, the eliminator of seventh seed Robby Ginepri to advance to his first ATP quarterfinal. He lost to Dmitry Tursunov, but Nishikori became the youngest player to reach the quarterfinals at Indianapolis since Boris Becker, who went on to reach the semifinals in 1985.

In his third career ATP event, Nishikori defeated Teymuraz Gabashvili in the first round in Washington, D.C., before falling to Julien Benneteau in the second. He qualified for the ATP event in Beijing and lost in the first round to Ivan Ljubičić. Nishikori received a wildcard to the ATP event in Tokyo, Japan, where he lost in the first round to Zack Fleishman. He participated in the draw ceremony in Tokyo and received the Tokyo Sports Writers Club award. Nishikori represented Japan at the Asian Hopman Cup 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Nishikori started the year by reaching the semifinals of the Miami challenger tournament. He then entered the Delray Beach tournament as a qualifier ranked no. 244. He gained entrance to the main draw by defeating Nicolas Todero and Alex Bogomolov Jr. In the first round, he defeated Florian Mayer due to a retirement in the second set. In the second round, Nishikri defeated Amer Delic, another qualifier. In the quarterfinals, he won against Bobby Reynolds. In the semifinals, he upset Sam Querrey. In the final, Nishikiori upset top seed James Blake in three sets, 3–6, 6–1, 6–4, to become the first Japanese man in nearly 16 years to win an ATP event.^[2] He lost in the first round of the Miami Masters to the Spanish player Albert Montañés. He faced James Blake again, this time at the River Oaks International tournament in Houston, Texas in the first round, but Kei lost 4–6, 4–6. He went out in the third round of the 2008 Queen's Club Championships against Rafael Nadal, 4–6, 6–3, 3–6, in just over two hours. Facing the world no. 2, Nishikori played well in the match and showed promise. His first Grand Slam appearance at the 2008 Wimbledon Championships on 23 June 2008 ended in a first-round forfeiture to French player Marc Gicquel. Suffering from an abdominal muscle strain, Nishikori retired after the second set, after winning the first set 6–4, but losing the second by 5–7. In August, he entered the Beijing Olympics on a wildcard.^[3] There, he lost in the first round to Rainer Schüttler of Germany.

Nishikori made his debut at the US Open, defeating 29th seeded Juan Mónaco, 6–2, 6–2, 5–7, 6–2, in the first round. He cruised to the third round, after downing Croatian Roko Karanušić. On 30 August 2008, he became the first Japanese player to reach the round of 16 at the US Open in 71 years, when he beat fourth seed David Ferrer in five sets, 6–4, 6–4, 3–6, 2–6, 7–5, in what was considered one of the tournament's major upsets. He lost his chance, however, to compete in the quarterfinals when he was beaten by 17th seed Juan Martín del Potro in straight sets, 3–6, 4–6, 3–6.

In the Japan Open Tennis Championships, he made it to the round of 16, before losing to Frenchman Richard Gasquet 1–6, 2–6.

Nishikori was given a wildcard for the Stockholm Open, where he made it to his second ATP level semifinal of the year, despite playing with a knee injury. He received a walkover in his quarterfinal match against Mario Ančić, who had to withdraw due to illness. In the semifinals, he was beaten by fourth seed Robin Söderling, 1–6, 0–6.

Nishikori made a disappointing start to the season, losing to Jürgen Melzer, 5–7, 2–6, 1–6, in the first round of the Australian Open. On 25 March, Nishikori was named 2008 ATP Newcomer of the Year and became the first Asian player to win the award.^[4] He withdrew from the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open because of an injured right elbow.

Kei made his comeback after his injury of the previous year. After receiving a wildcard at Delray Beach, he was beaten in the first round by Benjamin Becker. Kei returned to the Challenger tour later in April with great success, reaching quarterfinals at both Baton Rouge and Tallahassee events, followed by a victory at the Savannah Challenger over Ryan Sweeting, 6–4, 6–0, in the final. On 15 May 2010, he won the Sarasota open by defeating Brian Dabul, 2–6, 6–3, 6–4.

Nishikori played in his first French Open. He rebounded from two sets down to defeat Santiago Giraldo of Colombia in the first round, 2–6, 4–6, 7–6, 6–2, 6–4, but he lost his second match against Novak Djokovic, 1–6, 4–6, 4–6. He lost to Richard Gasquet in the first round of the 2010 AEGON Championships, 3–6, 3–6. At Wimbledon, he played second seed Rafael Nadal in the first round and lost, 2–6, 4–6, 4–6,

At the U.S. Open, the Japanese no. 1 met Croatian Marin Čilić in the second round. Nishikori ousted the 11th seed, 5–7, 7–6, 3–6, 7–6, 6–1, to advance to the third round, his best Grand Slam showing in 2010.

Nishikiori opened the season in Chennai, where he upset two-time defending champion Marin Čilić in the first round, before falling in the quarterfinals to Janko Tipsarević. In the 2011 Australian Open, Nishikori reached the third round. In the first round, he defeated Fabio Fognini of Italy, 6–1, 6–4, 6–7, 6–4. He then ousted Florian Mayer of Germany in the second round, 6–4, 6–3, 0–6, 6–3. His run was ended in the third round by ninth seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain, 2–6, 4–6, 3–6. After the third-round appearance in Melbourne, his ranking rose to no. 70. At the first two ATP Masters Series events of the year, Nishikori suffered a first-round loss in Indian Wells and a second-round loss in Miami. Nishikori then reached his second final at the 2011 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships. He was defeated by American wildcard Ryan Sweeting. At Roland Garros, Nishikori lost in the second round to Sergiy Stakhovsky, 1–6, 6–3, 3–6, 6–7. He faced Lleyton Hewitt in the first round at Wimbledon, but lost in four sets, 1–6, 6–7, 7–6, 3–6. Nishikori then retired in his first-round match against Flavio Cipolla at the US Open. At the 2011 Shanghai Masters, Nishikori reached his first Masters 1000 semifinal. In the second round, he defeated Robin Haase in three sets, after losing the first set 0-6. In the third round, Nishikiori scored the biggest upset of the tournament by defeating fourth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6–7, 6–4, 6–4. Nishikiori followed up that impressive performance with another three-set victory, this time over Santiago Giraldo, 7–6, 4–6, 6–3. In the quarterfinals, Nishikori upset 12th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets, 6–4, 6–3. He lost to no. 2 Andy Murray in his first Masters 1000 semifinal. He reached a career-high of world no. 30. In the Swiss Indoors Basel tournament Nishikori defeated an ailing world no. 1 Novak Djokovic to reach the final in three sets, 2–6, 7–6, 6–0, coming back from a 4–5, 0–30 deficit in the second set. The win was only Djokovic's fourth loss of the season, second loss in a completed match, and first loss of a completed match on a non-clay surface. On the heels of the victory, Nishikori was granted special exemption into the 2011 BNP Paribas Masters and achieved a ranking of world no. 24.

Nishikori started the season at the Brisbane International, where he lost in the second round to Marcos Baghdatis. At the Australian Open, Nishikori came back from a set down to defeat number sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, where he was then defeated by fourth seed Andy Murray. Nishikori was the first Japanese male player to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 80 years.^[5]

Nishikori lives in Florida and trains at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. His parents are Kiyoshi and Eri, and he has a sister, Reina. His hobbies include baseball, golf, reading, and listening to music. He is represented by Olivier van Lindonk of IMG.

Playing Style

Nishikori is well-known for his endurance during long matches. He uses a semi-western grip on his forehand and a combo of continental/semi-western for his backhand. He generally relies on his accurate groundstrokes to win matches. His serve is reliable but lack power at times. His game is describe as offensive baseliner with excellent depth and consistency.

Michael Te-Pei Chang (born February 22, 1972) is a former American professional tennis player. He is best remembered for becoming the youngest-ever male player to win a Grand Slam singles title when he won the French Open in 1989 at the age of 17.

Known for his on-court speed and fighting spirit, Chang is considered by many observers to have been one of the best tennis counterpunchers of all time. He also introduced the jumping two-handed backhand. He remained in the top 10 of the ATP world rankings for several years in the 1990s, peaking at world no. 2.

Chang was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2008.^[1]

Tennis career[link]

Chang first came to the tennis world's attention as an outstanding junior player who set numerous "youngest-ever" records. He won his first national title, the USTA Junior Hard Court singles, at the age of 12. Aged 13, he won the Fiesta Bowl 16s. Two years later, aged 15, Chang won the USTA Boys 18s Hardcourts and the Boys 18s Nationals, and became the youngest player to win a main draw match at the US Open when he defeated Paul McNamee in four sets in the first round. A month later he reached the semifinals at Scottsdale, Arizona to become the youngest player to reach the semifinal stage of a top-level professional tournament. He won his first top-level singles title in 1988 at San Francisco, aged 16 years and 7 months.

Chang's most significant youngest-ever record came in 1989 when he won the French Open at the age of &1000000000000001700000017 years, &10000000000000110000000110 days, to become the youngest male player ever to win a Grand Slam title. He defeated Stefan Edberg in a five-set final, 6–1, 3–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–2. His victory is equally remembered for an epic five-set encounter with Ivan Lendl in the fourth round (see below). Chang became the first American man to win the French Open since 1955. And in August 1989, Chang became the youngest player to be ranked in the world's top 5. (Chang's success marked the start of an era in which a new generation of American players—which also included Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, and Andre Agassi—would come to dominate the game.)

Chang met Edberg in the semifinals of the US Open in 1992, this time Edberg winning in a five-set encounter, 6–7, 7–5, 7–6, 5–7, 6–4. The 5-hour, 26-minute match was the longest in US Open history. Chang reached three further Grand Slam finals after his 1989 French Open triumph, losing the 1995 French Open final to Thomas Muster, the 1996 Australian Open final to Boris Becker, and the 1996 US Open final to Pete Sampras. In the 1995 French Open, he defeated Michael Stich and then two-time defending champion Sergi Bruguera in the semifinals in straight sets, eventually losing to Muster. In both the 1996 Australian and U.S. Opens, he defeated Andre Agassi in the semifinals in straight sets; a win over Sampras at the U.S. Open would have made Chang the no. 1 player in the world. In the 1997 U.S. Open, he was the odds-on favorite to win after Sampras was upset by Petr Korda; however, Chang lost to eventual champion Patrick Rafter in the semifinals in straight sets.

Chang was a key member of the US team which won the Davis Cup in 1990. In the semifinals at Austria, his dramatic comeback from two-sets down against Horst Skoff, 3–6, 6–7, 6–4, 6–4, 6–3, led the US into its first Davis Cup final since 1984.^[2] Chang went on to defeat Darren Cahill in straight sets, as the US defeated Australia in the final. He was also on the US team which won the World Team Cup in 1993. His best performance in the year-end singles championship came in 1995, when he defeated Muster, Jim Courier, and then shockingly dominated Pete Sampras in the semifinals, before losing in the final to Boris Becker.

Chang represented the US in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, reaching the second round before being eliminated by Jaime Oncins.

Chang was introduced to tennis by his father Joe, who was his first coach. During his rise in 1989 (including his French Open title), he was coached by José Higueras. For much of his professional career, he was coached by his older brother Carl Chang, who also played in several doubles tournaments with him in the early-1990s. Chang retired from the professional tour in 2003. During his career, he won a total of 34 top-level professional singles titles. His final top-level title was won in 2000 at Los Angeles. His total career prize-money earnings was US$19,145,632. His career-high singles ranking was world no. 2 in 1996, following his US Open finals performance. He was a year-end top-ten player for six consecutive years in the 1990s (1992–1997), a feat matched in the decade only by Pete Sampras. He is one of a few players to win ATP titles in three different decades, and his three Indian Wells Masters championships (1992, 1996, 1997) are an ATP record, equaled only by Roger Federer.

Since retiring from the top-level game, Chang has joined Jim Courier's senior tour, which began on March 10, 2006 in Naples, Florida.

1989 French Open match vs Ivan Lendl[link]

Chang's most famous match took place at the 1989 French Open (on the way to winning his only Grand Slam singles title). In the fourth round, he faced world no. 1, reigning Australian Open champion, and three-time former French Open champion Ivan Lendl. Conventional wisdom made Lendl the heavy favorite to win the match against the 15th-seeded 17-year-old Chang.

Lendl appeared to be on the way to victory after taking the first two sets 6–4, 6–4, and then breaking Chang's serve in the opening game of the third set. However, Chang broke back immediately and went on to claim the third set, 6–3. During the fourth set, Chang experienced a severe attack of leg cramps, and though he won the set to level the match, he considered retiring from the match while up 2–1 in the fifth set. He later said that he felt "an unbelievable conviction in my heart" not to give up, and decided to finish the match.^[3]

Chang adopted some unusual tactics in an attempt to overcome his cramps. He hit the ball high into the air on many points to slow the game down (known as "moon balls"), and also began to go for more winners in order to shorten the points.^[4] Chang also ate bananas and drank water at every opportunity. The success of these tactics caused Lendl, known to be one of the least easily fazed players, to lose his rhythm and caused him to swear at the umpire and the crowd, especially after losing a key point in the fifth set when Chang shocked him by delivering an under-arm serve.^[5] Chang later explained, "I was trying to break his concentration. I would do anything to stay out there."

Chang continued to suffer from cramps, but managed to take a 5–3 lead in the fifth set with two match points on Lendl's serve. Aiming to break Lendl's concentration one more time, Chang stood well inside the baseline, almost at the T-line in the centre of the court while waiting to receive Lendl's serve. The crowd started laughing at the bizarre situation, and Lendl seemed to think everyone was mocking him. The tactic worked, as Lendl produced a double-fault to give Chang the victory, 4–6, 4–6, 6–3, 6–3, 6–3, in 4 hours and 37 minutes. Chang sank to his knees and broke down in tears at the conclusion of the match. Seven days later, he went on to lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires, becoming the youngest male champion in Grand Slam history.^[6][7]

The match was played on June 5, 1989, just one day after the height of the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Chang has frequently noted the impact of the massacre when recalling his French Open victory:

"A lot of people forget that Tiananmen Square was going on. The crackdown that happened was on the middle Sunday at the French Open, so if I was not practicing or playing a match, I was glued to the television, watching the events unfold...I often tell people I think it was God's purpose for me to be able to win the French Open the way it was won because I was able to put a smile on Chinese people's faces around the world at a time when there wasn't much to smile about."^[8]

(Note: Chang and Lendl played a similar match in a semifinal of the 1991 Grand Slam Cup, where Chang again came back from two sets down and won 2–6, 4–6, 6–4, 7–6, 9–7.)

Personal and family life[link]

Chang was born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1972 to Joe (張洪笙) and Betty (董良因, née Tung). His parents are both Chinese and were educated in the United States, where they met; Betty moved to the US in 1959 and Joe in 1966. They were introduced by a mutual friend. Betty was born in Delhi, India as the daughter of Michael Tung (董宗山), then serving as the Chinese Ambassador to India. Joe was born in Chaozhou, China, and moved to Taiwan at age seven. Michael's Chinese name (simplified Chinese: 张德培; traditional Chinese: 張德培; pinyin: Zhāng Dépéi) was chosen by Joe, and his English name by Betty (who named him after her father).

After moving from Hoboken, New Jersey to Placentia, California, the Changs moved to Encinitas, California. Chang dropped out of Grade 10 at San Dieguito High School in Encinitas, California, after passing his GED in February 1988 in order to pursue a professional tennis career.

A devout Christian, Chang's faith was first brought to the spotlight after his 1989 French Open championship, when upon winning, declared "I thank the Lord Jesus Christ, because without Him, I am nothing."^[9] Chang and his family established the Chang Family Foundation in 1999, dedicated to integrating tennis, family, and Christian faith. The Foundation is now based in Rancho Santa Margarita, California.^[10]

Chang served as Chairman of ATP Tour Charities in 1994. He has supported grassroots tennis development in Asia through his Stars of the Future program in Hong Kong and the Reebok Challenge across Asia. He was one of five athletes named in the second annual "Most Caring Athlete" list by USA Today Weekend in 1995. In 1997, he was given one of seven Asian-American leadership awards by A Magazine for his status as a role model for Asian-American youth. He has also served as a national spokesman for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation in the US.

In 2001, Chang served as a goodwill ambassador for the 2008 Beijing Olympic bid committee. In 2002, Chang published a book about his career, Holding Serve: Persevering On and Off the Court.

He attended Biola University in La Mirada, California for 1.5 years for a Masters in Ministry to increase his personal Bible knowledge. He serves on the Biola University Board of Trustees.^[11]

Chang currently lives in Orange County, California. He is an avid fisherman, who often takes fishing trips while traveling. He also has a passion for breeding African cichlids in several large freshwater aquariums at his home. On October 18, 2008, Chang married Amber Liu, another professional tennis player who is 12 years younger than Chang.^[12][13] They have one daughter, Lani, born December 9, 2010.^[14]

On May 3, 2009, Chang was honored by the Los Angeles Chinese Historical Society of Southern California in "Celebrating Chinese Americans in Sports".^[15]

Steve Porter (born c. 1978)^[1] is a music video producer, remixer and DJ originally from Amherst, Massachusetts. Porter, who began producing music at the age of sixteen while attending The Williston Northampton School, was discovered by Chris Fortier in 1999^[2] and was signed to Fortier's Fade Records label. Since this time he has toured the world extensively on DJ tours and has released numerous remixes and original productions using his own name and monikers Chop Shop, Driven Child, Saturated Fatty, HDF & Bons and Agent 001 with fellow Boston DJ/producer Eli Wilkie. Porter placed #2 in the DJ Times "America's Best DJ"^[3] award and has been consistently ranked among the worlds top dj's in numerous^{[weasel words]} polls.^[4]

He calls the blend of various genres of dance music "Porterhouse." 2005 saw the release of Homegrown, a DJ-mixed artist album on FDS Recordings. In 2006 he released the "Porterhouse" compilation which included many of his close friends productions in the mix. In 2007, Porterhouse 2 was released on EQ recordings from Australia.

Slap Chop Remix[link]

Porter made a music video remix of the original Slap Chop infomercial, dubbing it "Rap Chop". After posting it to YouTube on April 25, 2009, it quickly spread over the internet to become famous. As of November 6, 2010, it has been viewed 11,628,274 times, reached #16 as the all time Top Rated, #3 all time Top Rated in Comedy, #14 Most Viewed and #1 Top Favorite. In July 2009, in an apparent deal between Porter and Vince Offer, the "Rap Chop" was made into a real infomercial that began airing nationwide.^[5][6] Porter's original remix included footage from the movie Breakin'. However for the national infomercial, the Breakin' footage was replaced with a female dancing and someone dressed in a pink bunny rabbit costume dancing. This was because the rights to use the Breakin' film footage either couldn't be obtained or were not sought.^{[citation needed]} Additionally, the success of Porter's "Rap Chop" remix landed him a job doing remixes for FedEx.^[7]

Porter followed up his "Rap Chop" music video remix on May 15, 2009 with a music video remix of the original ShamWow! infomercial, dubbing it "Jam Wow". After a Televised Commercial was made on October 21, 2009 it was renamed the "Shamwow Jam". The Shamwow Jam commercial is currently^[when?] being aired.

Press Hop[link]

In June 2009, Steve Porter released "Press Hop". Featuring footage of Allen Iverson and his infamous 'practice' press conference, the video quickly spread virally and has gathered over 3 million hits on YouTube. It also features footage of Mike Gundy's famous 2007 rant,^[8] as well as Jim E. Mora, Joe Namath and Terrell Owens.

After the overwhelming^[quantify] success of the original Press Hop, Steve Porter was asked by ESPN to create a sequel. "Press Hop 2" aired in July 2010 and featured Tiger Woods, Brett Favre, Randy Moss, and various clips from LeBron James' "Rome Wasn't Built In One Day". In addition to the actual video, Steve Porter was featured in E:60's "Behind The Scenes of Press Hop 2" that gave a sneak-peek as to how he creates his viral hits.

Steve Porter has also developed video remixes for a variety of television programs and networks including E!, VH1, ABC, TeenNick and more. He has also worked for a variety of brands to help create unique advertisements. Lotus, Shamwow!, Ultra Music Festival and Mighty Fine Burgers have all received treatments.

NBA Playoff Ad Campaign[link]

In Spring 2010 Steve produced the NBA's ad campaign in conjunction with the advertising agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners.^[9]

The material in the ads spans years of NBA playoff history and compiled some of the most famous names to ever play. Airing during commercial breaks throughout the playoffs, the videos were "Amazing is Unity", "Amazing is Belief", "Focus!", and "Steppin' Up!".

Other commercials at this time had titles such as "Where Clutch Happens", "Where Defense Happens", "Where Sixth Man Happens", and "Where Determination Happens".

During the 2010 NBA Finals, two new commercials were created and aired featuring footage from the previous rounds of 2010 playoff games that had been played. Both "Amazing is The Journey" and "Amazing is The Finals" were well received^{[by whom?]} viral hits and captured the excitement and emotion^{[peacock term]} of the NBA Finals.

Steve was mentioned by Howard Stern in lieu of a new mix he released featuring clips of actor Seth Rogen. The mix was played during Rogen's appearance on The Howard Stern Show on January 9, 2012.

NFL Sunday Countdown[link]

In advance of the 2010 NFL season, Steve Porter was asked to create a series of videos for the NFL Sunday Countdown program. Each video would be short in length, but would highlight storylines from the NFL season as it progressed. Early season videos featured Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens, as well as Philadelphia Eagles members Andy Reid, Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb. Another video featured quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Eli Manning prior to the second "Manning Bowl" game between the Indianapolis Colts and the New York Giants.

Randy Moss and "One Clap"[link]

On October 31, 2010, NFL Sunday Countdown aired Steve Porter's "One Clap" during a game between the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings. The video, which features wide-receiver Randy Moss, was an instant viral hit and quickly accumulated one million views on YouTube and was featured on variety of sports programs on ESPN and TSN in Canada. Shortly after the game and the initial airing of the video, Moss was waived by the Minnesota Vikings, thus creating additional online buzz.

In addition to his work with the National Basketball Association and ESPN, Steve Porter's company Porterhouse Media is producing^[when?] various tv spots for Hockey Night In Canada.

Maxim Magazine tapped Porter to create a mashup of the "Hometown Hotties".^[when?]

Japanese game developer Konami commissioned Porter to create material for their Xbox home console releases of DanceDanceRevolution. Thus far, he has submitted 2 original songs ("Somebody in Da' House" and "Sockem"), as well as a remix of the fan-favorite Konami original song, "Put Your Faith In Me".
