Wow! NASA Spacecraft Sees Earthrise from the Moon
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has captured new images of the Earth rising over the horizon of the moon's surface. The latest pictures are reminiscent of the Earthrise image taken by Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders back in 1968, who participated in the first manned orbit around the moon. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera doesn't take single color pictures like a digital camera or cellphone, but rather a series of images that are put together to create an accurate picture. Using several wavelengths of light, the relative brightness and hue of the Earth is as close to how it really looks short of actually staring out the window of the spacecraft. Seeing the Earthrise can only happen from lunar orbit, because from the surface of the moon, the world would only appear to only slightly change its position in the sky, rather than rising and setting on the horizon like the moon does when it is viewed from Earth. To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the first iconic Earthrise image, NASA created a digital simulation video for people to learn about the historic moment with audio clips and images from the Apollo 8 mission. 'Oh my God, look at that picture over there!' [Anders]- published: 20 May 2014

James Aslaksen's P-51 Ride with Bill Anders
Spring Break 1996. I had met Bill Anders a few days before and wanted James to meet him. After all Anders was the first person to leave Earth orbit and see the dark side of the moon and I told James that. A little while later while in the Tower Mr. Anders called up and said "Send James down". The rest is captured here with a little music dubbed in for effect. My ride came 2 days later on my birthday - awesome !- published: 15 Nov 2013

Earthrise 45th Anniversary - A look at our home from the Moon!
This video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/goto?4129 In December of 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 became the first people to leave our home planet and travel to another body in space. But as crew members Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders all later recalled, the most important thing they discovered was Earth. Using photo mosaics and elevation data from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), this video commemorates the 45th anniversary of Apollo 8's historic flight by recreating the moment when the crew first saw and photographed the Earth rising from behind the Moon. Narrator Andrew Chaikin, author of A Man on the Moon, sets the scene for a three-minute visualization of the view from both inside and outside the spacecraft accompanied by the onboard audio of the astronauts. The visualization draws on numerous historical sources, including the actual cloud pattern on Earth from the ESSA-7 satellite and dozens of photographs taken by Apollo 8, and it reveals new, historically significant information about the Earthrise photographs. It has not been widely known, for example, that the spacecraft was rolling when the photos were taken, and that it was this roll that brought the Earth into view. The visualization establishes the precise timing of the roll and, for the first time ever, identifies which window each photograph was taken from. The key to the new work is a set of vertical stereo photographs taken by a camera mounted in the Command Module's rendezvous window and pointing straight down onto the lunar surface. It automatically photographed the surface every 20 seconds. By registering each photograph to a model of the terrain based on LRO data, the orientation of the spacecraft can be precisely determined. A New Look at NASA's Apollo 8 'Earthrise'
A New Look at NASA's Apollo 8 'Earthrise'
NASA has produced a remarkable new video replay of the moment on December 24, 1968, when the astronauts on the Apollo 8 mission orbiting the moon were unexpectedly confronted with an "Earthrise" and worked together to snap some of the most viewed photography in history. This is an excerpt from the full public-domain video, narrated by the Apollo mission historian Andy Chaikin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE-vOscpiNc Here's a New York Times Dot Earth post on this imagery and Japan's 2007 video version of this same Earthrise phenomenon: http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/12/24/happy-birthday-earthrise/ Here's more from the space agency: In December of 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 became the first people to leave our home planet and travel to another body in space. But as crew members Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders all later recalled, the most important thing they discovered was Earth.
