In 2005, Mississippi's Gulf coast took the brunt of Hurricane Katrina, suffering damage estimated at more than a billion dollars, including at the key fuel facilities in Gulfport. With other storms come and gone, residents are preparing for another: Hurricane Isaac, which reached windspeed powerful enough to become official overnight Tuesday. Nobody seems to expect a storm with the same strength as Katrina, but residents are boarding up and hunkering down nevertheless. John Terrett reports from Mississippi. Related article

As the Syrian conflict continues, more and more people are leaving their homes and seeking refuge abroad. Some just cross the borders, while others register officially as refugees. Jordanian officials have processed more than 150000 refugees - the most of all of Syria's neighbours. In order to accomodate the influx of refugees that the community can no longer absord, Jordan has just opened its first official refugee camp specifically for Syrians. Currently, the 2000 tents will provide temporary housing to 10 000 refugees, but if the crisis escalates, the government could expand the camp, sheltering up to 113 000 Syrians. Al Jazeera's Nisreen el-Shamayleh reports from Zaatri, North Jordan.

Lakhdar Brahimi, who has succeeded Kofi Annan's role as a special envoy to Syria, told Al Jazeera that "change [in Syria] is necessary, indispensable, unavoidable". Brahimi, as joint United Nations-Arab League envoy, is tasked with mediating a seemingly intractable conflict between President Bashar al-Assad's increasingly embattled government and rebels who say they will not lay down their arms until he is dead or gone. Brahimi, a longtime UN diplomat and former foreign minister of Algeria, stopped short of calling for Assad to step down. "Kofi talked to him, and I will talk to him," he said.

Restless beings Charity organisation protest outside the Bangladesh embassy to voice their concerns over the treatment of the Rohingya people Since the clash between the Rakhines and the Rohingyas surfaced 3 weeks ago, it has shown no signs of improvement let alone ending; the violence ferociously continues as its estimated over 6000 Rohingya people have died with cases of deaths every day of both Rakhine and Rohingya, 12000 displaced and an immeasurable amount of homes still continue to be burned down (though according to the Rohingya Blogger, it has stopped in the Sittwe and Maungdaw township). The Nasaka, the Bumese Border Force, are left to their own devices under the rubric of National security, they have had a long run in their part in making the lives of the Rohingya a living hell. However, their crimes have taken a new height since these clashes began, aiming to systematically rid the Rohingya and make them leave Arakan, a plan which had succeeded in 1992 when a similar incident resulted in the mass exodus of the Rohingya. www.restlessbeings.org

Five Australian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan in two separate incidents, according to NATO officials. Three soldiers were shot on Wednesday by an Afghan wearing a soldier's uniform, bringing to 45 the number of NATO-led coalition troops killed in rogue shootings this year. Lieutenant Colonel Richard Spiegel confirmed the deaths. In response to the shocking news Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will return early from a regional Pacific leader's conference. Speaking at a news conference she said, "it's going to feel for many Australians like a physical blow although the mission in Afghanistan will continue." Opinion polls in Australia say Australians overwhelmingly want their troops out of Afghanistan, where 1500 troops are currently based, and their neighbour New Zealand said just last week it would accelerate the withdrawal of its troops after three more were killed by a roadside bomb. These latest deaths will no doubt shine the light on US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is due to lead a US government team to the 16-member forum from Friday.
