This Week in Horror - Body Parts
In celebration of the first successful hand transplant in America we are joined by Filmmaker Eric Red, who portrayed the difficulty of bonding with a strangers limb 20 years ago in his psychological thriller ' Body Parts'. Hosts Matt Raub and Staci Layne Wilson delve into the nature of evil in Eric's films and the menacing characters he has created from the existentially twisted serial killer John Ryder in 'The Hitcher' to the Vampiric outlaw clan of 'Near Dark'. Eric discusses the practical challenges of shooting with both animals and children in his Werewolf film 'Bad Moon' and shooting his latest film in the confines of a house for his J-Horror inspired haunting husband film '100 Feet'. For more information, show notes, and upcoming schedule, go to www.thisweekin.com.

MIDWAY : trailer : a film by Chris Jordan
The MIDWAY film project is a powerful visual journey into the heart of an astonishingly symbolic environmental tragedy. On one of the remotest islands on our planet, tens of thousands of baby albatrosses lie dead on the ground, their bodies filled with plastic from the Pacific Garbage Patch. Returning to the island over several years, our team is witnessing the cycles of life and death of these birds as a multi-layered metaphor for our times. With photographer Chris Jordan as our guide, we walk through the fire of horror and grief, facing the immensity of this tragedy—and our own complicity—head on. And in this process, we find an unexpected route to a transformational experience of beauty, acceptance, and understanding.
We frame our story in the vividly gorgeous language of state-of-the-art high-definition digital cinematography, surrounded by millions of live birds in one of the world’s most beautiful natural sanctuaries. The viewer will experience stunning juxtapositions of beauty and horror, destruction and renewal, grief and joy, birth and death, coming out the other side with their heart broken open and their worldview shifted. Stepping outside the stylistic templates of traditional environmental or documentary films, MIDWAY will take viewers on a guided tour into the depths of their own spirits, delivering a profound message of reverence and love that is already reaching an audience of tens of millions of people around the world.
Production of the feature film "MIDWAY" continues through 2012.

hair-whip heartbreak
Naomi is 16, and works with us at photography factory when she is off school pretty much as an equal member. Lets be honest age is irrelevant in a great picture, plus she has a sense of the social media space to rival the best new media agency analysts. All the newest trends are always playing out as only she predicts. Her detailed clear and analysis of youth culture on the internet is worth a million dollars to us and she is a key member of our team. More importantly her simple black and white photographic portraits are utterly brilliant, an evocation of sub suburban teenage life as seen though the eyes of a 15 (now 16) year old girl. But on the day of this slow motion test Naomi was not her normal beautiful smiling dry sarcastic self (think Juno with a camera). Recently she had a relationship with a Hollister lookalike boy end in an unfair way (what was ever fair about being 16?) and have to get it all dragged around the internet as the aftermath played out on FaceBook in a very modern and very public way. So in other words she was putting on a brave face. We all involved setting up the high speed camera and needed someone to stand in as a lighting dummy, When shooter one had the idea to getting someone to shake their hair around... and see how it might look at 2000 fps. Naomi stepped up to the plate and quite shocked us by the force and passion she used to whip. The beguiling result is here... if you look at here closely you can see something else:
Something about that action and the air swishing though her hair just seemed to change her mood, as if she had just tossed away the weight of an the old nightmare, something thick and heavy that had been clinging to her, but suddenly it was gone. As she was hair whipping for the camera, shooter one quietly said to himself:
"Go girl, shake that boy right out of your hair..."

Homunculus
Humble is proud to present, Homunculus, the first of an annual series of experimental films by our in-house directing collaborative, Hydra. Conceived of and directed by Sam Stephens, Homunculus is a dark and twisted fable of spontaneous generation and untrammeled id. Taking its title from the Latin word for "Little Human", the piece is an associative mashup between the two concepts behind the word: The first being middle-age alchemical beliefs that "little men" could be spontaneous generated from dead or decaying matter. The second being Carl Jung's usage as a personification of pure id. These ideas, combined with our love of Dutch still life's "beautiful decay," sowed the seeds for this unique little monster of a film.
The Hydra team assembled an entire still-life spread; fruits, cheeses, flowers, fish, and an uncooked pheasant. They then sealed it off in a 6x6 foot plexiglass box. 3 DSLrs, set at varying angles, were set to shoot a frame every 5 minutes for 11 days. Meanwhile, co-director Chris Mauch began to design a series of "little men," some cute and cuddly, some not so much. In Maya, Chris and our team of volunteer animators and modelers began to build and rig the creatures.
Over the course of 4 months, in between jobs and on weekends, Sam, Chris, and the team pieced together the sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing madcap narrative --a mixture of Tex Avery cartoons and H.R. Giger inspired body horror.
True to its subject, and to the surprise of its producers, what was to be a small 30 second blip organically grew into an entire HD short film. With the completion of the 12-tone score by Koven Smith and the surround sound mix by Joe Muiccio, we're pleased to premiere our furry little labor of love. Please enjoy...hopefully on an empty-ish stomach.

Jacob`s ladder scene that inspired Silent Hill
I am a really Silent Hill fan back since days of 1999. When i saw this scene of Jacob`s ladder movie, i couldnt keep myself from smiling, specially on the twitching monster/guy at the end. That twitch inspired Valthiel and the Closer monsters from SH3, and a lot of other monsters along the series. The decayed/abandoned hospital theme, with several body parts, its also a trademark in the series, and every Silent Hill fan will almost instantly remember of they favorite hospital part when they see this scene. Even before any gore appear, it already feel like a Silent Hill hospital. Personally, it rememberred me of when u first got to an hospital, when there is no gore, but certainly something out of place. To finish, ill paste some curious facts about the "twitch" at the end that i got straight from Wikipedia: """The film's director Adrian Lyne used a famous body horror technique in which an actor is recorded waving his head around at a low frame rate, resulting in horrific fast motion when played back. In an interview Lyne said he was inspired by the art of Francis Bacon when developing the effect. This effect is one of the signature animation techniques developed by The Brothers Quay and used extensively in their short films, including Street of Crocodiles (1986), based on the short novel of the same name by the Polish author and artist Bruno Schulz. The horror video game franchise Silent Hill borrows this effect in the second, third and fourth sequel of the game, although ...
