South African authorities have used a law last used in the apartheid era to bring murder charges against 270 miners involved in unrest at the Marikana mine earlier this month. The 270 workers would be tried under the "common purpose" doctrine because they were in the crowd which confronted police on 16 August, an official said. Police opened fire, killing 34 miners and sparking a national outcry. Al Jazeera's Tania Page reports from Rustenberg. Related article

A Japanese media published information, that the recently held CCP elites' meeting in Beidaihe decided to hold Bo responsible for his actions. On August 26, Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported, CCP's elite made decision on Bo's fate at Beidaihe's meeting. The outcome is to expel Bo from the party and investigate his responsibility for the former Chongqing vice mayor Wang Lijun's fleeing to the US consulate. The report also said that Bo would likely be stripped of his status as a delegate to the National CCP Congress. This is expected to clear the obstacles during the investigation on Bo's crimes. The Asahi Shimbun referred to sources that have contacts with officials who attended the Beidaihe meeting. They said Hu Jintao and his allies overrode objections by Jiang Zemin's faction and other strong supporters of Bo. The report also said that the official announcement on Bo's punishment is expected to come in the meeting of the Central Committee, scheduled right before the 18th Congress. The report says, Bo's expulsion shows Hu has maintained the upper hand in decision-making during the power struggle of the top-level leaders for the 18th Congress.
